Kimberly Po-Messerli and Don Johnson took home the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 2000.

Heather Ludloff is one of nine former Bruins to be listed in the top-100 of the WTA Tour singles rankings at some point and time during their careers. Her best result on tour was a third-round showing at the 1982 U.S. Open. She also reached a career-high No. 37 in doubles in 1987.

Patricia Hy-Boulais reached the quarterfi nals in singles at the 1992 U.S. Open. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 28.

Barbara Gerken was a quarterfi nalist in singles at the 1981 U.S. Open. She owns career-high rank-ings of No. 55 in singles and No. 45 in doubles.

Jane Chi reached a career-high No. 62 in the world in 1999, advancing to the second round at both the Australian and U.S. Opens that same year.

Located on the UCLA campus nestled just west of Pauley Pavilion and south of Drake Stadium is the impressive Los An-geles Tennis Center - home to both UCLA men’s and women’s tennis teams. After playing 24 years on the Sunset Canyon Courts, the UCLA men’s tennis team moved its matches to the LATC in 1985, and the women’s team made the LATC its primary home facility in 1997.Upon moving to the LATC, the Bruin men won 48 straight dual matches on their new courts over three seasons before losing to Long Beach State in 1987. The Bruins’ 21-year LATC record is 316-24 (.929). The Bruin men had a 53-match home win streak (the longest recorded) at the LATC before a 5-2 loss to USC on April 3, 1991. The Bruins also held a 44 consecutive dual-match winning streak before losing to NCAA runner-up Stanford on April 16, 1994.

The LATC was the first large-scale outdoor tennis stadium opened in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and was offi cially dedicated on May 20, 1984, just in time to host the 1984 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships and the 1984 Olympic Games. Since then, the LATC has been site of several top collegiate and professional tournaments. The NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships returned to the LATC in 1987 and ’88, while the NCAA Men’s Tennis Champion-ships called the LATC home in 1997.On the professional level, the LATC has been a regular stop of the ATP Tour for many years. The fi rst tournament at the LATC, the Union 76 Pacifi c Southwest Open, featured former Bruins Jimmy Connors and Eliot Teltscher in the fi nals. More recently, the LATC hosts the Mer-cedes-Benz Cup, which was re-named the Countrywide Classic in 2005.

The popularity of the LATC continues to grow beyond the tennis world. During 1997 alone, it hosted the World Beach Volleyball Championships and several MTV Rock ‘N Jock events.The LATC features eight lighted, hard-surface courts, a 5,800-permanent seat grandstand around the three main courts and a two-level clubhouse. At full capac-ity, the LATC can accommodate 10,000 spectators. The clubhouse contains locker rooms, coaches’ offi ces and team rooms for both the UCLA men’s and women’s teams, as well as the offi ce of the Southern California Tennis Associa-tion (SCTA).The second level of the clubhouse fea-tures a 4,000-square foot indoor dining area and kitchen. Center court is called the Times-Mirror Center Court. The stadium is named the Straus Stadium and Clubhouse.

The Countrywide Classic brings professional tennis to the Los Angeles Tennis Center every summer, and this year’s event takes place between July 16-22. Past champions of the tournament include: Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker. The most recent addition to the LATC came in 2005 when the Greiner Fam-ily Scoreboard was added to the back courts. Prior to that, the Budge Offer Family Scoreboard was added to the stadium courts in 2000. Both score-boards enable fans to follow the action on every court from either location. The front scoreboard has a feature that lets fans at home follow every UCLA men’s and women’s home match live over the internet at www.uclabruins.com.
