Executive Committee Meeting Change of Watch

MEETING SCHEDULE

Monthly Business Meetings (a.k.a. General Meetings) are held at 1930 hours on the third Monday of each month, with the exception of July and August. Elections are held at the March meeting. The general meeting is open to all members and their guests. Only Active / Additional Active members are eligible to vote. There are two dinner meetings per year, the Christmas Party in December and Change of Watch in April. These meetings may be held at a different date or time. Monthly Executive Meetings of the Officers, Committee Chairs and any members who may wish to attend, are held at 1900 hours on the second Monday of each month, unless otherwise scheduled. Meetings during summer months often occur at the cruises. Only Executive Committee members are eligible to vote. Executive Committee members are the: Commander, Executive Officer, Educational Officer, Administrative Officer, Squadron Secretary, Squadron Treasurer, three elected Members at Large, and the Immediate Past Commander. The current Commander votes only in the event of a tie.

PUBLICATIONS

THE SEAMAN’S LOG The Seaman’s Log is our squadron newsletter. It is published monthly and mailed to all members. Non-members may receive this publication by contacting the Circulation Manager. A small fee may be required. Bridge Officers are expected to submit articles to the Seaman’s Log monthly. Other officers submit articles as required. All members are invited to submit an article for publication at any time. The article should be of interest to the general membership and will be published space and time permitting. Articles should be submitted to the Newsletter Editor by the Executive Meeting of the month prior to publication. The Newsletter editor reserves the right to edit all materials submitted for publication.

THE ENSIGN USPS publishes a monthly magazine, The Ensign, which is mailed to each Active Member. If a household contains both an Active Member and an Additional Active Member, only one copy of The Ensign is received. The printing cost savings allow the Additional Active Member to receive membership at a reduced rate. All members may submit articles for publication in The Ensign. See the publication for details.

CARDINAL POINTS District 16 publishes a newsletter, Cardinal Points, mailed to active members 3 times a year. This newsletter informs members about activities and issues occurring at the district level. Members of District 16 may submit items for publication in Cardinal Points by contacting the District Newsletter Editor.

SQUADRON AWARDS

MERIT MARKS At the end of each calendar year, the Squadron Commander has the privilege of nominating squadron members (active or family) for a Merit Mark. Persons may be nominated for a Merit Mark if they have performed a substantial contribution to furthering the interests, programs, and objectives of USPS, its districts and squadrons. Generally, this effort must total at least 8 hours of time and involve multiple contributions per year. Merit Marks are awarded by the Chief Commander based on the review of all nominations received from the Squadron Commanders. Only one Merit Mark can be awarded to a member in a given year, no matter how large the contribution. When an active Member receives five Merit Marks that member receives the status of Senior Member and the right to wear Senior Member insignia. An Active Member who earns twenty-five Merit Marks is awarded life membership, a plaque from the Chief Commander, a permanent membership card and exemption from USPS National Dues. Each year at the squadron Change of Watch, the Olympia Sail and Power Squadron recognizes the efforts of squadron members who have received a multiple of 5 Merit Marks by awarding them a Merit Mark tab to display under their membership pin.

NAMETAGS Nametags assist members in getting to know one another. This is particularly important for older members to get to know new members and for new members to meet other members. The Olympia Sail and Power Squadron awards each person who has attained membership a squadron nametag. This nametag is to be worn at all squadron functions. Members caught at a squadron function without wearing a nametag are fined 50 cents.

STAN GRUESSING EDUCATIONAL AWARD The Stan Gruessing Educational Award was established in 1992 for significant contribution to the squadron education program. Criteria:

A. Open to any one – not just class instructors. B. Contributions must be apparent and above normal expectations. C. Occurred during last watch. D. Must have participated in the squadron educational department. E. Must be a member in good standing. F. Repeat winners can’t win in successive years.

The squadron Executive Committee will select the winner by a secret ballot. The award will be presented at the Change of Watch. The winner of the Stan Gruessing Education Award is often the squadron’s nominee to District 16 for the Chapman Award.

MILT WEBER PARTICIPATION AWARD The Milt Weber Participation Award was established in 2001 for a member’s significant participation in squadron activities. The squadron Executive Committee will select the winner by a secret ballot. The award will be presented at the Change of Watch. This award is based on active participation in squadron activities: attendance at meetings, participation in cruises/social events, participate in public/community service activity, assist with decorating or clean up, assist on phone committee, help with boat smart classes. The same member cannot receive the award in two consecutive years. The year runs January to January. Elected officers are not eligible.
