Happy New Year

It is hard to believe that it is now 2019 already! It doesn’t seem that long ago that I first came to Watsonville as your resident minister. Over the past year and a half, Jane and I have been blessed to work with all of you, share the dharma with you and gotten to know you. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to be here in Watsonville. We are truly enjoying our time here. I have watched with pride and awe as the members of the temple have worked so hard to put together services, events and fundrais-ers. I don’t say it often enough, but thank you all for your support and hard work. Your efforts make my work not only easier but so much more enjoyable. I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a happy 2019. Finding happiness in the new year requires us all to work together for the happiness of all. True happiness is found in sharing life with others. It is found through sharing, caring and supporting each other. This is especially important when we see pain and suffering around us. Without a doubt in 2019 we will face adversity, times of difficul-ties, moments of pain and anxiety. We will see this in our lives and in the lives of those near and dear to us. These moments will try us and we will struggle. This is the moment when we need to reach out to those in need and those in suffering. Practicing to the best of our abilities, compassion. This is the moment when we remember the words of the Buddha and the truth of change in our lives. This is also the moment when life reveals to us our limited self and how powerless we are in the face of adversity. We are not supermen or superwomen, we are simply human beings con-fronting human conditions. You will often hear that Amida accepts us just as we are. In those moments of adversity, we are seeing ourselves clearly as simple human beings with human foibles. This is the person whom Ami-da embraces with wisdom and compassion. Knowing that we are imperfect, we are accepted by Amida just as we are. How grate-ful I am. Namoamidabutsu, Rev. Hosei Shinseki

Hoonko—Shinran Shonin Memorial

“It is saddening that so many people, both young and old, men and women, have died this year and last. But the Tathagata taught the truth of life’s transience for us fully, so you must not be distressed by it. I, for my own part, attach no significance to the condition, good or bad, of a person in his final moments. People in whom Shinjin is determined do not doubt, and so abide among the truly settled. For this reason their end also-even for those ignorant and foolish is a happy one.” January 16, 1262 C.E. is the day that the founder of Jodoshinshu (True Pure Land) Bud-dhism, Shinran Shonin died. He was 90 years old at the time of his death, a remarkable feat in 13th Century Japan. At all Jodoshinshu temples around the world members are given the opportunity to express their gratitude to Shinran. Gratitude is expressed to Shinran because he revealed to the world the true purpose of Shakyamuni’s appearance in the world. That purpose was to create the 18th vow of the nembutsu, the vow that saves all sentient beings. Conditions will bring about change in our lives, some small, some drastic and devastating. However, the truth that the Buddha taught and Shinran clarified is that change is neither good nor bad, positive or negative, but a truth of life. This truth revealed to us is the great wisdom and compassion of Amida. Many of us have heard the Dharma of the Buddha all our life, and we listen with varying ca-pacities. Some listen to the words and think, “I’ve heard this before” and it does not affect their lives. Some listen to the words and think, “I understand and agree”. Some listen and don’t hear. However, when the conditions are ripe and we are ready, the words of Shinran will ring true and real for us. Continue to listen to the Dharma and a moment will come when namoamidabutsu will be the response to that moment. “Amidst a world undergoing constant and far-reaching change, it is difficult to know what may be taken as the foundation for our lives and how we should carry on our existence. In every age and in all societies, however, it is the true and real teaching that genuinely guides us; nothing else suffices.” “When we say “Namu-amida-butsu,” The benefits we gain in the present are boundless; The karmic evil of our transmigration in birth-and-death disappears, And determinate karma and untimely death are eliminated”

Hoonko (continued)

On Sunday, January 27th at 10:00 am, we will have the opportunity to express our gratitude to Shinran for revealing to us life’s true purpose. This is the first of many occasions in 2019 to deeply listen to the teachings of the Buddha and Shinran. Our guest speaker will be Rev. Hoshu Matsubayashi, minister emeritus. True to Shinran’s last words he will return again and again. “Due to my old age I am ready to return to the world of Buddha however just like the waves hitting the shores continuously I will return again and again. If you enjoy the Nembutsu life alone think there is another joining you, and if there is two of you enjoying the life of Nembutsu think that there is three of you and that third person is none other than Shinran myself.” Namoamidabutsu, Rev. Hosei Shinseki

makes such a loud noise when it runs.

All but two of the ABA Board members will be retiring. The ABA elections were re-

cently held and hopefully the ABA will continue.

Thank you for those members who helped at Mochi Tsuki on Dec. 9th.

New Year’s Potluck will be held on Sun., Jan. 6. ABA is in charge of food set up on the

two buffet tables.

ABA Memorial Service will be held on Sun., Jan. 20, 2019 at 10am. Rev. Hiroshi Abi-

ko will be the guest speaker.

ABA NEWS

Message from the President

To the Temple Members:

Having served as the Temple President for nearly the past two years, it is hard to believe

that my term is coming to a close. During this time, my goals were to led by example,

represent the Temple at various events, evaluate processes and/or events with a fiscal mind-

set and try to enhance attendance at temple events. I have tried to implement processes

which ensure consistency and fiscal accountability. Whenever possible, I have encouraged

participation from temple members, friends, and community members.

I feel fortunate to have served the Temple “as your faithful leader” the past two years. The

support I received from all of you is heartfelt and much appreciated. Please extend the same

kind of support you gave to me to our incoming President, Perry Yoshida.

With deepest appreciation, Barbara Kaita Shingai

In the Jodoshinshu (True Pure Land) tradition of Buddhism, the memorial service is an important observance where we are reminded of the continuing influence of our deceased an-cestors. It is important for us to understand that the memorial is for the benefit of the living and not for the deceased. The timing of the memorial service is not as important as having a memorial service. In some families, memorials are held every year on the death date. Below is the memorial schedule for 2019.

Year of Death 2018 1 Year Memorial

Year of Death 2017 3rd Year Memorial

Year of Death 2013 7th Year Memorial

Year of Death 2007 13th Year Memorial

Year of Death 2003 17th Year Memorial

Year of Death 1995 25th Year Memorial

Year of Death 1987 33rd Year Memorial

Their Place In The Sun

Although Autumn leaves continue to fall, It is very clear that Winter is here, As once again, we come to the end

Of a fiery, turbulent year.

With a grateful heart, we will survive This cold and blustery season.

But in reality, we can plainly see That life is short, without rhyme or reason.

In the aesthetic Sierra Nevada foothills,

Paradise was their place in the sun. Surrounded by pine trees and giant oaks,

A heavenly haven, peaceful and fun.

From a glorious sunrise to radiant nights, Life was beautiful ~ life was good,

In this perfect place they called home base, With happiness, grace and solitude.

We all believe that we are immortal,

So we build a castle on dreams and hope, Until one day, the castle crumbles,

And the dream goes up in a puff of smoke.

The vinyl records, the golf clubs and books, Of beloved elderlies in their twilight years.

How do they suppress the heartache; How do they stop the tears?

But through this debacle, lest we forget, The gracious acts of human kindness.

With outstretched hands, they took a stand, With love, compassion and mindfulness.

I believe I see rainbows and bluebirds in Paradise,

Which means their dreams can still come true. To the year of Two Thousand Eighteen, With a hopeful heart, we will bid adieu.
