The Retrofit Chicago Energy Challenge is a voluntary leadership program for existing properties

Objective: Accelerate energy efficiency across the City

Commitment: Chicago Energy Challenge participants voluntarily agree to: • Reduce energy usage in one or more buildings by 20+% in the

next 5 years• Begin work within 6 months • Track progress and share successes

Impact: Average energy savings of ~15%: • 30 properties have reduced energy by 20% or more• Energy cost reductions of $10.6 million/year

Why Join? Retrofit Chicago is FREE program that provides• Peer-to-peer learning• Recognition and awards• Additional energy efficiency assistance

• The ordinance focuses on data accuracy & transparency:

– Buildings larger than 50,000 ft2 are required to:

1. Track whole-building energy use and Report to the City (annually)

2. Verify data accuracy (every three years)

Chicago’s building energy benchmarking ordinance calls on the city’s largest buildings to track, verify, and report energy use

Chicago Energy Benchmarking Essentials

• The City is authorized to make building-level energy performance data available to the public. Click here to see the data.

• Benchmarking includes reporting of whole-building energy use in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

• Chicago Energy Benchmarking Help Center

Chicago Benchmarking Ordinance

• Requirements for compliance

– Track whole building electric/gas use and various space types (office, vacancy, retail, etc.) for previous calendar year

– Data must be professionally verified (e.g., Professional Engineers)

– Submit by June 1 of every year

NEW! The Chicago Energy Rating System will build on the success of the benchmarking policy to increase transparency

Timeline: • Initial ratings assigned and Placards mailed in August/September 2019.• Required to be posted by end of March 2020

Who Will Receive a Rating?• Properties 50,000 ft2 and larger who have benchmarked

their data with the City.

Goals of the new Chicago Energy Rating System:• Make ENERGY STAR scores simpler to understand• Increase transparency of energy performance• Address water usage information

Additional provisions and next steps

Additional provisions (for properties 50,000 ft2 and larger):

• Water data: Authorizes City of Chicago to also share the water usage of each property

– Building owners are not required to report water data, as the data are owned by the City

• New Exemptions:

– Adds a new, one-year (temporary) exemption if a building was recently sold

– Provides exemption process for the new rating and disclosure due to rare technical issues

Next Steps

• First ratings assigned: Summer 2019

• Post rating in building: March 2020
