The Breitenbush Credo

Our Mission

We of the Breitenbush Community dedicate ourselves to living mindfully in the spirit of love,

unity, honesty and service.

We see ourselves as guardians of Breitenbush Hot Springs, safeguarding the Earth and healing waters, assuring

their continued availability to all beings who respect them. Our primary service is to provide a healing retreat

and conference center that promotes holistic health and spiritual growth and facilitates

the gathering of people in celebration of the experience of life.

Our community is supported by the services we provide.

We are committed to the health and well-being of ourselves and our families, to live, work, play and grow

together harmoniously. We mutually support and respect each person’s dignity, and awaken to the Spirit within

each of us that acknowledges we are all One.

The community is committed to a lifestyle conducive to holistic childrearing and personal growth.

Our precepts for self growth include personal accountability, honest communication, awareness of our

actions and the quality of their results, directing our energies to the positive, expressing appreciation for what

others do, correcting what is clearly not working for the community or for us as individuals, assuming the

responsibility for creating and sharing abundance, and choosing and re-choosing to be together.

We structure our lives such that we can experience daily the rewards of success, peacefulness and joy. It is

our hope that the thriving community we create will be an inspiration to others in their exploration

of lifestyle and community.

We also extend ourselves to the greater society in which we live, the world community, and commit ourselves

to being socially, spiritually, politically and environmentally responsible.

To provide a safe and potent environment

where people can renew and evolve

in ways they never imagined.

Conscious Business Conversations

In the old model, we often entered our workplace each day and put on a compromised version of ourselves. In the new paradigm, we bring in our full being—our dreams, wisdom and experience—knowing that we must channel our energies in ways that balance our needs with that of the organization. We’ll explore the meaning of workplace culture, best practices for dealing with negativity (ours and others!) and methods for getting out of our own way. Join us in an interactive process where we “go deep” about what it means to do work, be at work, and experience stronger results, more meaning and greater fulfillment.

Flip Brown has worked with socially responsible organizations for over 15 years in Vermont and across North America. He has experience in international business, non-profit service, depth psychology, executive coaching, rock ‘n’ roll and organic gardening. He is the author of Balanced Effectiveness at Work: How to Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labor Without Driving Yourself Nuts. Refuge Recovery Retreat

The Buddhist path to treating addiction is one of developing wisdom and compassion through meditation, renunciation and wise actions such as service, amends, forgiveness

and generosity. Buddhism offers a non-theistic spiritual path; Refuge Recovery follows the traditional Four Truths and Eight Fold Path of early Buddhism. Refuge Recovery is a program that can be worked in conjunction with, or as an alternative to, the 12-Step approach. During this retreat, there will be periods of meditation, talks on Buddhist recovery, group discussion and Refuge Recovery meetings.

Noah Levine is the founder of the Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society with centers in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and over 20 affiliated groups in North America and Europe. He teaches meditation groups, gives workshops and leads retreats internationally. Noah has created a process of addiction recovery based on the teachings of the Buddha called Refuge Recovery. Beloved Earth, Boundless Sky

In volatile times, it is easy to disconnect in myriad ways. Fusing the complicated aspects of living with the unbounded field of our deepest nature is easier said than done.

Weaving together form and spirit enables us to live skillfully in a complicated world. With our awareness grounded in both earth and sky, our human nature shines.

We’ll draw from timeless wisdom traditions using breath and meditation, prayer and devotion, interactive practices, and dialogue. These tools can reignite those connections, integrating the beauty and wonder of being alive with the practical challenges we face here and now.

Our sessions will be balanced by periods of silence and time to hike, rest, soak, connect and delight in beauty of Breitenbush.

Betsy Toll has engaged in spiritual development, social action and conscious service since working with Ram Dass in the mid-1980s. A volunteer hospital chaplain and founder of Living Earth in Portland, she offers workshops and community programs. Ram Dass, Roshi Joan Halifax and Joanna Macy are treasured teachers on her dharma trail. REG: Breitenbush 503.854.3320 INFO:

Awakening into the Sacred:

Yoga & Meditation

On the sacred land of Breitenbush, we immerse ourselves in the timelessness of nature’s wisdom. Yoga reveals this wisdom as our very nature. Join us in deep physical asana, profoundly restorative practices, and compelling conversation for living your yoga, as a very alive process—not a preconceived destination—both on and off your mat.

UPRISING 2018

This weekend-long workshop is presented by the collaborative leadership of Allies: People to People. In our time together we’ll review the fundamental principles and practices of our peer counseling method with a special focus on how we can reclaim the wholeness of our human nature.

We’ll work in pairs, small groups and all together, exchanging time and attention. We’ll practice being in two roles: the role of the growing, healing, vulnerable recipient of attention, and the role of the giving, thoughtful, supportive listener. Through this process, each of us will get to consider how emotional support, fresh thinking and community can help us heal our lives and face the world with empowerment, creativity and hopefulness. Completion of an introductory, co-counseling fundamentals class is required to attend this workshop. Contact the person listed below if you are interested in attending the spring class that finishes before the workshop. We’d love to have you!REG & INFO: Marcella Westcott, mwestcott@

A New Leaf: A Creative Writing

Workshop

Just as our cottonwoods and conifers unfurl their foliage this season, stretch and open yourself through writing. Immersed in this place of riffling waters and wind-strummed trees we’ll practice ways to shape your findings into effective writing. This workshop develops organically with participant interest. Themes we may consider include loss, hope, change and love. We will weave being outdoors with readings, discussions and writing in a fun, relaxed, supportive atmosphere.

All writing levels welcome!Amy Minato is author of Siesta

Lane, a creative nonfiction book about living in a rural community, and two poetry collections, Hermit Thrush and The Wider Lens. Through the practices of asana and breath work, chant and mantra, meditation and journaling with great writing exercises, we shall investigate this incredible relationship we are graced with by having a body and mind. May 11 – 13 Frank Coppieters

Oregon School of Massage:

First Degree Reiki Class

Reiki is a form of natural healing that takes place through gentle, sacred touch. It restores health and harmony to the physical body, releases emotional blockages and activates a closer connection to spirit. Reiki works with the vibration of love and compassion and is an easy form of self-healing. Its recent origins have been traced back to Japan in the late 1800’s and the inspired work of Dr. Mikao Usui. The opening to this simple and mysterious universal life energy happens through a series of initiations and the practice of the form through various hand positions. Frank honors the oral tradition and Phyllis Furumoto as the lineage bearer. This is a First degree Reiki class.

Frank Coppieters, PhD, Reiki Master, LMT #2385, taught at the graduate level for 13 years at the University of Antwerp in Belgium before he became a spiritual teacher, counselor and Reiki Master. Path of Kirtan: Open Your

Voice, Open Your Heart

The Path of Kirtan explores the ancient practices of kirtan and sacred sound. In this workshop, we’ll immerse ourselves in this luminous ocean through voice, mantra, devotion, movement, yoga and meditation to connect more deeply with the divine Presence. In many Eastern cultures, the practice of music is approached as a spiritual practice, as the yoga of sound, and that is how it will be presented in this workshop. From this foundation, the chanting of sacred names and mantras will flow with new depth and new freedom. This workshop is offered with the intention to cultivate more beauty, love and peace inside ourselves and in our world.

Heather and Benjy Wertheimer lead kirtan (sacred chanting) worldwide as the duo Shantala, with soul-stirring vocals, sacred lyrics and exquisite instrumentation. Together they create music with beauty, passion and reverence. Shantala has performed and recorded internationally with such sacred music luminaries as Krishna Das, Deva Premal and Miten, and Jai Uttal. The Courage to Change:

Yoga and the Twelve Steps

Recovering from addiction or alcoholism is a process of cleansing the mind and the body. The Twelve Steps are a tool to build a successful life that can work for everyone, for we are all addicted to something. The practice of yoga supports the internal changes that happen as we heal the body and mind from addiction. We will practice yoga asana to heal the physical body. We will learn movement practices that support our recovery from trauma and abuse and help to detox and cleanse the tissues. We’ll learn meditation practices to improve our conscious contact with a power greater than ourselves. We will support each other as we find the courage to change ourselves and the world.

Lisa Wells, PhD, ERYT500, teaches yoga, body awareness, meditation, relaxation and trauma-release. She co-owns Live Well Studio in Corvallis. Her 30 years of yoga practice have brought her patience, humility and happiness. Her 59 years of life have led her from trauma, through addiction, to recovery and joy in a life that includes rather than excludes suffering. Lisa has been teaching yoga since 2000. Choosing Conscious Elderhood

There is a big difference between simply becoming old, and aging consciously, with purpose and intention. This retreat, for people age 50 and up, provides an inspiring experiential introduction to the fruits and challenges of a conscious elderhood, which can be a time of growth, passion, purpose and service.

Such an elderhood is consciously chosen and requires preparation at all levels—physical, psychological and spiritual.

Using reflective time in nature, work with life review, legacy and intention, ceremony, sharing councils and 24 hours in solitude, you will let go of beliefs, attachments and self-identifications that no longer serve you, and open to an expanded vision for your conscious elderhood.

Ron Pevny is Director of the Center for Conscious Eldering, author of Conscious Living, Conscious Aging, and three-time host of the Shift Network’s Transforming Aging Summits.

Susan Prince is a life coach whose background includes environmental education for young people. She is active in the Conscious Elders Network and has strong experience with an indigenous model of community where elders have a pivotal role.REG & INFO: centerforconsciouseldering.

Awakening the Creative:

The Painting Experience

In process painting the goal is free expression, with emphasis on the creative process rather than on technique or expertise. The Painting Experience takes place in a respectful and nurturing environment where you’ll receive individual attention and guidance to help you open to inspiration, growth and change.

Discover a creative voice entirely your own. ~ Trust your intuitive perception, not the mind’s critical chatter. ~ Follow your energy rather than what looks good or makes sense. ~ Overcome blocks by following their hidden message. ~ Experience your imagination as intelligent—a doorway to deeper knowing. ~ Explore process painting as a path to spiritual awakening.

You are welcome even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush. All materials are supplied—all you have to bring is YOU!

For over four decades Stewart Cubley has pioneered a way of integrative and creative living through the practice of process painting. His method is one of respectful questioning, inviting you to extend yourself into new areas of thought and feeling. Stewart is co-author of Life, Paint & Passion: Reclaiming the Magic of Spontaneous Expression. CE credits for MFT/LCSW/LPCC/LEP/RN.REG & INFO: The Painting Experience 415.488.6880

Yoga and Love: Living Luminously

Not Restlessly

Through the practices of yoga we experience love, grace, openness, contentment and joy. Yet we don’t sustain this luminous understanding. What gets in the way? Explore the fundamental obstacles to living as love: human restlessness, out of balance living, mental habits and conditioning that keeps us tied to our more primitive thinking.

Through psycho-educational discussions, Sarahjoy and Jay address key elements of our human restlessness. Yoga practices, breathing

techniques and meditation support us in addressing anxiety, self-critical thinking and self-care ambivalence, guiding us to the love that is our basic nature and giving us a repertoire of skills for the daily life that forgets this love.

EDGU Training: Empower Your

Spine and Brain

EDGU (edge-you) is evolutionary spinal maintenance. Grounded in an open, stable stance that specifically isolates all motion to the spine, the upper body is gracefully gyrated through a fluid sequence of pivotal movements. This art of rhythmic spinal tuning systematically exercises the intervertebral disks to avoid disk degeneration by maintaining their inherent strength, pliability and absorbency. EDGU balances the left and right hemispheres of the body/brain, keeps the vertebral bodies mobile, liberates spinal compensation patterns and creates a “wholly” experience, blending body movement with spiritual invocation.

The EDGU Training program is a five-day event for learning and imparting the 14-step EDGU sequence. Daily schedule includes EDGU classes, step-by-step EDGU breakdown instruction, practice sessions, in-depth spinal maintenance insights, free time and laughter. Sierra Club Outing: Hot Springs,

Cold Creeks & Snowy Mountains

“Few regions pack such a variety of trails into an area crossable by a two-hour drive,” writes William Sullivan about the Oregon Cascades, and we will explore as much of that variety as can be packed into a seven-day trip. Our day hikes will include cold creeks in the foothills, wooded lakes, rushing rivers, barren lava fields and vistas of snow-capped peaks from above tree line. We will sleep in large tents provided by the retreat, eat breakfast and dinner in the lodge and pack our lunches to take on the trail.

This is a Sierra Club national outing. More information can be found on the Sierra Club website: sierraclub.org/outings/national, click on “advanced search” and search for “Robert Lowe.”

Robert Lowe attended his first Sierra Club backpack trip over 40 years ago. Motivated both by the beauty of the outdoors and by the close relationships that develop on Sierra Club trips, he began leading trips in 2015. Degree Reiki Class

Putting Astrology to Work in Your

Life: Thinking Cosmically while

Acting Locally

A full immersion astrological experience, spending four days in an intimate setting with like-minded people, exploring your individual relationship to the cosmos. Whatever level of astrological experience you may have, this special retreat with astrologer Rick Levine will deepen your knowledge of astrology, widen your understanding of the world, increase your awareness of your own patterns, and forever alter your perspective of your relationship with time.

Rick has a teaching style that connects with beginners while also bringing new ideas to the table for more advanced students.

We each possess a chart that is an imprint of the moment of our birth. But the natal chart is just a jumping off point, for the planets continue to move on their appointed rounds. The relationship between the planetary movement and a natal chart is how we understand the nature of unfolding events and their timing. We will explore strategies to handle our own transits.

Rick will calculate the natal horoscope for every person who attends the workshop. These charts of the participants will be the basis of the workshop’s teaching.

Rick Levine is a professional astrologer whose daily forecasts appear on Tarot.com, the Huffington Post, Yahoo and other leading web sites. He co-authored (with Jeff Jawer) eight years of Your Astrology Guide. Rick is a frequent lecturer at astrology conferences around the world and has an active astrology counseling practice out of Redmond, WA

What is consciousness? Is it limited only to the state through which we experience life? Or are there different layers waiting to be explored? These deeper aspects will be discussed by ‘M’ along with theoretical and practical techniques, which will help the process of exploring consciousness.

The Headless Way: Seeing Who

You Really Are

Over six decades a contemporary way of “seeing one’s Nature” or “Enlightenment” has developed. In essence, it’s the same as Zen and other disciplines. The Way offers a user-friendly approach to seeing who you truly are. This experiential workshop will guide participants through awareness exercises that allow for the experience of the true nature of being. One is more likely to see their true identity in a minute of active experimentation than in years of reading, satsangs and traditional meditation. Discover this deep truth about your indisputable identity and then go on rediscovering it in daily life.

Richard Lang is a graduate of Cambridge University and coordinator of the Shollond Trust, which was founded to support the worldwide sharing of the Headless Way. He has devoted his life to seeing and to offering this simple, accessible Way. He is author of several books, producer of numerous videos, and a CD.

There will be time for families to relax and play together, time for parents to have rejuvenating, meditative alone time and time for families to eat and enjoy the outdoors together. We will have parents-only yoga classes, multi-age kids’ yoga, art and nature classes, and integrated playful yoga and music time. We will group families into “tribes” to support each other in having some free time to meditate, hike and enjoy the springs.

The retreat is organized in a cooperative structure that involves all participants but allows unique opportunities for solitude as well. Partners are welcome to attend as full participants, or to enjoy free time soaking in the sacred natural beauty during workshop times. Lila Retreat was created by mothers with expertise in yoga, art, nature, music and cooperative play for children as well as mindful parenting, play and emotional intelligence.REG & INFO: Flow Yoga 541.FUN.YOGA

News From Our Circleby Peter Moore: [email protected]

Fire in the Forest, 2017This past summer we passed through an ordeal by fire.

A scene from that event, imprinted in my mind from early September, has me standing at the center of the footbridge late one night looking upriver, to the east. The fire had ust appeared at the top of Devils Peak, and I witnessed trees torching like roman candles, exploding in flame, individually and sometimes in clusters. The night-sky was backlit with an eerie orange glow created by thousands of acres of wilderness burning along the backside of Devils Ridge, behind the peak. I was awed by the spectacle of fire as an elemental power, consuming all those trees with flame-lengths rising at times well above tree tops.

The crew of 10 who sheltered in place at Breitenbush during the burn labored to maintain our off-grid energy

systems, and to get water to our buildings. During those weeks, we met each morning, planned essential details, then went to work. There were daily Co-operators Calls hosted by the federal Incident Management Teams assigned to manage the fire. There was close affiliation with the many county, state and federal agencies coordinating with each other throughout the event. Eventually, our little band of workers transformed this place into a misty scene, a rainforest, wetting virtually every building on property, together with their close surrounds of land and flora. Had fire ultimately come to Breitenbush, it would have had to be big, hot and sustained to burn the built environment down.

At the beginning of the crisis, Breitenbush made three important decisions. We evacuated all guests and most of our staff due to hazardous air conditions (smoke), well in advance of the Level 3 Evacuation notice. Then we set up an Emergency Operations Center far from the fire to keep essential administrative tasks flowing. This was staffed with 10 office workers, event coordinators and finance folk. We also temporarily laid off some 70 workers so they could receive unemployment benefits to assist them during the evacuation period.

Early on, the Emerald Forest Loop trail was identified by fire managers as the preferred fire-line defense perimeter, with intent to conduct a back-burn upslope to meet and slow down the advancing forest fire. A number of big trees

www.breitenbush.com • 29

were felled and bucked up along that trail system, effects now viewable by hikers, unfortunately. Thankfully the planned back-burn was never ignited.

We lost approximately half a million dollars of projected income due to closure and evacuation. Many guests who had deposits for stays during the weeks we were closed generously allowed us to retain their deposits in lieu of receiving a refund, and instead booked for future stays. Additionally, several of our faculty presenters donated their event fees or set up a donation system amongst their event participants to support Breitenbush during this fire emergency. These generous actions helped our cash flow mightily and we are very grateful.

All in all, we were lucky. No east winds whipped the flames into a crown-fire inferno during the weeks the fire worked its way downslope from the peak toward our little WUI (“Wildland-Urban Interface”, the technical term for our community at Breitenbush). And finally, when fire got close, just a mile or two away from our property boundaries, an atmospheric river poured out of the sky, dumping nearly seven inches of rain during several days on the forestlands, stopping the fire’s momentum. As I write this, there remain smoldering hotspots in the high country nearby, but we are safe. For now.

Our response to the threat last summer included designing, engineering, purchasing and installing a system of pumps, manifolds, hoses and sprinklers to wet down our structures. At the conclusion of the danger, the Breitenbush Fire Department (BFD) carefully packed all the equipment away, with instructions about how to set that system up again quickly if needed. We will certainly do drills in the future to keep up our chops in regard to the skillsets needed to answer a future fire emergency.

We’re still analyzing this event in terms of our response to the recent crisis and preparation for the inevitable next one. We have no illusions about fire visiting our neck of the woods again. It certainly will, perhaps soon, given global climate trends. In this regard, I think of Houston, Texas, the fourth largest and fastest growing city in the USA. That city has endured three 500-year flood events in the past three years. This kind of statistic renders such predictive metrics as nonsense, and challenges us to pay attention to the science and respond responsibly to the challenges. Facing season after season of inferno in the fall and flood in the spring, we the people are being reminded of, and at times overwhelmed by, the elemental powers contained in fire and water when they are unleashed by the evolving reality of climate change. A brief examination of the consequences of fire

Good Bye Sage! With this issue, we say good-bye to Sage Waitts who

and flood across our world, from California to Calcutta, eliminates all doubt about the fact that we have entered an age begun by the advent of the industrial revolution and determined by humanity’s worldwide dependence on fossil fuels. We are all part of this interconnected reality, regardless the silly political debate about whether global climate change is real or imagined. Thankfully, Breitenbush passed through our ordeal by fire intact this time, and are better prepared for the future.
