Did you know that nearly four-fifths of West Virginia is covered in forest? There’s a reason why our state nickname is “The Mountain State!” West Virginia is dotted with streams and lakes which means plenty of outdoor recreation for active retirees, like hiking, bird-watching, canoeing, kayaking, skiing and fishing. But West Virginia is also home to year- round festivals to suit all tastes, whether your interests are in food, music, or arts and crafts. Many, of course, combine all three! Whether you’re looking for tasty autumn harvest food, a chance to hear (or play) some mountain music, retail therapy, or creating holiday traditions with the whole family, West Virginia has a festival for you. Our forests are magnificent in the fall, which makes our October outdoor festivals a great time to enjoy the leaves and cooler temps. As autumn ends, and we turn towards the holiday season, you can find both indoor and outdoor activities, along with some serious shopping. No matter where you are in our Mountain State, you’re sure to find a festival, fair, or activity that offers you the best of West Virginia. Whether you’re visiting for a short weekend, extended vacation, or looking for place to call home, we expect you’ll get a warm welcome wherever you are in our beautiful state. Autumn is a beautiful time in southern West Virginia, our soft, rolling hills painted in lovely

shades of red, orange, and yellow. Bright blue skies provide a backdrop for the fall

splendor and there’s usually a crispness to the air. In southern West Virginia, autumn brings events and activities that take advantage of the great weather and beautiful scenery. Winter brings the arrival of snow-related activities, including curling up by a warm fire if that’s your idea of a good winter day! Because we don’t have a constant snow cover, there are still lots of days during the official winter season that are well-suited to enjoying the great outdoors.

Where to Stay

You’ll need a place to stay when you visit the greater Beckley area, whether you’re here to enjoy a specific festival or event, or just on vacation. While you can certainly find multiple options in brand name hotels/ motels, we’d like to highlight two places to stay that are unique to our area.

Cabins at Pine Haven

The Cabins at Pine Haven provide beautiful luxury one, two, and three- bedroom log cabins,

treehouses, and a four-bedroom lodge and conference facility to meet your needs for a short romantic getaway, family reunion, or business trips. Centrally located near some of southern WV’s most popular skiing, white water rafting, ATV riding, and golfing destinations, the Cabins at Pine Haven also offer fun on-site activities such as sand volleyball, 9-hole disc golf, 9-hole limited flight golf, playground, picnic shelter,

and more. Each cabin comes with a private hot tub and fireplace, and each is named after something local to our area. Visit the website, cabinsatpinehaven.com for more details and special packages that combine lodging with some of the best outdoor activities in southern West Virginia.

The Resort at Glade Springs

The Glade Springs Resort is located on 4,100 wooded acres and features world-class golf, a variety of accommodations, full-service meeting facilities, multiple on-site dining opportunities, and lots of outdoor activities. Championship golfing, spa services, and simple pursuits like swimming, hiking, and boating are all at its doorstep. Bowl a game or two, catch a movie, play an escape room, or enjoy a West Virginia sunset - without ever leaving the resort. Just outside the gates, world-class whitewater rafting, downhill skiing, rock climbing, and fly- fishing are all an easy drive away. For golfers, there are two great options. The Cobb Course, designed by George

Appalachian Coal Town Christmas will be held on

two consecutive weekends this year, November 29 and 30 and December 6 and 7 from 5:00 pm to 9:00

pm. Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for

children. In addition to the amazing light display, the regular guided underground tours and horse drawn wagon rides, Santa will make an appearance all four nights. There will be caroling in the church as part of the celebration at the Exhibition Coal Mine. The Gift Shop will be open and selling unique coal creations, jewelry, Christmas items and fabulous freshly made fudge.

Frights Nights WV

Fright Nights WV celebrates its 10th Year of Fear this Halloween season! Held at The Resort at Glade Springs, this year’s offerings encompass terrifying haunt experiences including The Hive, Slaughterhouse, Mr. Beard’s Freaks and Phobias, The Asylum, and Deadwood Manor. There is also a Monster Midway where you can enjoy entertainment and midway style games while you wait to enter the attraction. Fright Nights WV opens Friday, October 4th, and runs every Friday and Saturday through October. Not recommended for children under 13 without an adult. W. Cobb in the early 70s, features large greens and bunkers and gets rave reviews from Golf Digest and Golf Week. A second course, the Stonehaven Course, is an extraordinary mountain course framed by mature forest, especially beautiful framed by autumn leaves. The Resort offers four restaurants on-site, including a casual cafe, elegant special occasion dining, bountiful buffets, and a lively sports bar and restaurant. More information about The Resort at Glade Springs can be found on its website, gladesprings.com.

Appalachian Coal Town Christmas

Many of the events and festivals mentioned in this Retirement Times issue feature happy crowds, good foods, and live music, but we also want to take a moment to highlight an event that may be quieter and smaller, an event reminiscent of WV’s past. It’s the Appalachian Coal Town Christmas, when the Beckley Exhibition Mine’s period coal camp buildings are decorated for the season.

Beckley’s Chili Night

Chili Night, held on October 5, 2019, is a culinary delight! Residents and visitors have the opportunity to sample a wide range of chilis, from mild to blow-the-roof-off hot, and everything in between. Many local chili chefs compete each year, hoping to capture the honor of being named “People’s Choice.”

Santa’s Christmas Adventure

Families are invited to create memories this December at The Resort at Glade Springs through an interactive Christmas Adventure! Children will assist Santa’s elves in his workshop, try Mrs. Claus’ Christmas cookies, enjoy toy testing, attend Elf School, and even meet Santa Claus himself on this fun, one-of-a-kind experience. Visit santasadventurewv.com for more information.

Your Place To Call “Home”

Nicholas County has many reasons for you to make it your “home sweet home”. As mentioned above, our scenic mountain beauty is breathtaking in all four seasons and our fun places and activities are to numerous to count. Most important are our friendly, kind, and helpful people countywide. Nicholas County is located almost in the center of West Virginia. For transportation needs we have: in-county access to major transportation routes; a modern ADA compliant public bus transportation service (see photo); and 2 small airports. For community safety we have 1 state, 1 county, and 2 city law enforcement facilities staffed with excellent law enforcement officers. Great schools (including a Community and Technical College, see photo); medical facilities, doctors, and specialists (including the WV Medicine-Summersville Regional Medical Center, see photo); 3 public library’s; many community organizations for participating or volunteering as a youth or adult; and many churches and places of worship are just some of the opportunities for residents of all ages. Yes, for the above reasons and more, Nicholas County is a great place to live and call “home”.

Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, in the heart of Southern West Virginia, you’ll find the rural community of Summers County and the endearing Hinton Historic District. Easily accessible by major highways, yet tucked nicely away on scenic backroads.

Life in Summers is about as peaceful as it gets. Rural farms dot the landscape surrounding the county seat of Hinton. This one stop light town sits along the banks of the New River Gorge National River and is filled with reminders of its early beginnings as a railroad town. Today the rail is still relevant with Hinton being a regular stop on Amtrak’s Cardinal line.

In 1984 Hinton was listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its significance in American history, architecture, and culture. Within the Historic District you’ll find inspiring architecture and notable museums. Architectural styles include Victorian Romanesque, Neo-Classical Revival, Italianate, Gothic Revival among others. Museums include the Veteran’s Museum that is housed in a former Carnegie Library, and contains artifacts and memorabilia from past wars. A tour of the Railroad Museum gives you a glimpse into Hinton’s early years. The Campbell-Flannagan- Murrell House gives visitors a view into the oldest standing residential home in Hinton.

Throughout Summers County you can experience the beauty of West Virginia at its finest. It is at the confluence of three rivers that meander their way throughout the county and create ample opportunities for fishing and kayaking. With two stunning state parks, there is plenty of recreational activities to be had, anything from hiking and biking, to horseback riding, zip-lining and so much more.

The beauty of Summers County and the friendliness of its residents make it a place that you’ll return to again and again. Visit for a day, and you may just decide to stay.
