2 Why choose Living Costs Protection?

Helping cover life’s essentials, when you can’tLiving Costs Protection is a simple long-term policy that pays out if, during the policy term, you can’t work due to illness or injury. The cover will pay out for up to 12 months for each successful claim. During the policy term you pay us money every month – your premium. If you stop paying your premiums or cancel the policy, you’ll no longer be covered, and you won’t get any money back. This is not the type of policy you can ‘cash in’. We’ll only make a payment if a successful claim is made.

Putting food on the table is one of life’s essentials. But if you can’t work, even the weekly shop could be a struggle. That’s why we have Aviva Living Costs Protection, which provides a fixed monthly amount to help towards covering your essential outgoings like mortgage or rental payments, utilities and food.

No complex calculations. No second guessing. Just straightforward protection if you find yourself unable to work due to illness or injury.

We understand what an impact illness and injury can have on being able to work. When you’re covered, you can relax a little, and focus on your recovery. The policy also includes a range of extra benefits and support services as standard, giving you valuable help dealing with your situation.

Note: Receipt of benefit from this policy could affect how much you receive if you hold any other income protection policies and/or affect what you are eligible for under State means tested benefits. State benefits may change.

How Living Costs Protection worksLiving Costs Protection pays you a regular amount each month if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. This will be paid for up to 12 months for each eligible claim. There are no complicated calculations involved and we won’t ask for details of your earnings. If your claim is successful we will pay the monthly amount shown on your policy.

4 Why choose Living Costs Protection?

You need to be working at least 16 hours a week (unless you are on the first 52 weeks of maternity, parental or adoption leave) when you apply and immediately before your illness or injury to be eligible to claim on the policy.

• how much you could receive each month as a benefit – this can be between £500 and £1,500 per month

• when you’d like your payments to start – you can choose a deferred period of 4, 8, 13 or 26 weeks. This is the amount of time you will need to wait until benefit is paid. Benefit is paid monthly in arrears.

• how long you would like your policy to last – from 5 years up to 52 years. (It can’t continue past your 71st birthday)

You decide:

Can I have a Living Costs Protection policy?• You need to be working at least 16 hours a week either employed or self-employed

At the time you apply for this policy you must:

1. be currently physically living in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar; and

2. regard the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar as the location of your main residence and have no current intention of moving outside of any of those territories permanently; and

3. either

a. be a citizen of that territory or a British Overseas Territories citizen, orb. have been granted permission to settle permanently in the named territory, orc. be applying for a mortgage on a residential property which is, or will be, your main

residence in that territory.

You need to tell us if you move outside of the UK, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar, and your main residence is in another territory. We may need to change, reduce or remove any of your policy terms. We’ll give you details once you’ve told us. You should seek your own independent advice if you wish to continue with your policy after you move to another territory.

• You need to have been registered with a GP in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar for at least the last 2 years.

In order to assess your eligibility, we’ll also ask you some questions about your health and lifestyle. We won’t ask for details of your earnings or income you receive, but will ask about your occupation.

Additional benefitsWaiver of premiumOur Living Costs Protection policy includes a waiver of premium as standard. This means that, if you make an eligible claim, we’ll help out by paying your premiums for you from 13 weeks after you stop working, or from the end of your chosen deferred period – whichever comes first. Once your claim ends, you will need to resume paying your premiums.

Life change benefitLife change benefit is a feature that may allow you to increase your cover amount if your mortgage or rental payments go up, due to moving home or re-mortgaging, without the need for any further health and lifestyle questions to be answered. Please note this increase will be under a new policy and for an additional premium.

Back to work benefitOur back to work benefit can help ease the process of returning to work after time off. If your illness or injury means you earn less than you did before, but you’re still able to work, we’ll pay you one months’ benefit when you return to work. This won’t be paid if you’ve already received 12 months benefit payments.

We’ll pay it if you were in a paid job but illness or injury means you’re now earning less, because:

• you’ve had to change your occupation, or

• you’ve had to restrict your duties or hours.

What happens if…I’m on maternity/parental/adoption leave? If you’re ill or injured during the first 12 months of your leave, we’ll treat your claim as though you’re still working.

I’m not working? You won’t be able to make a claim on your Living Costs Protection policy if you are unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week immediately before your illness or accident.

If I change my jobIf you move to a different occupation we can change this on your policy once you’ve had your policy for six months. We will only change your recorded occupation if it’s a lower risk one that may result in your premium going down.

If I change my mind about how much cover I needYou can reduce your benefit amount once you’ve had your policy for six months.

It’s important to review your cover regularly as your circumstances and needs may change over time and discuss any concerns you have about the suitability of the policy for you with your financial adviser.
