In 2009, Bridging distributed donated household goods to 5,146 families, giv-ing them a fresh start by providing all the necessities to set up a home. Cargill Retirees were listed among the top five corporate volunteer groups for that year. The Cargill Retirees averaged 22 hours of volunteer time at Bridging for 2009. This is an impressive commitment from those vol-unteers at either Bloomington or Roseville. Generally we meet twice each month in the afternoons on the second Tuesdays or fourth Thursdays.
Cargill Cares Retirees was one of the origi-nal retiree organizations to volunteer as a group at Bridging. We’re pleased to be part of this community effort and welcome new retirees, especially at the Roseville loca-tion (near Rosedale). Come join us.

Bridging Recognizes Cargill RetireesBy Jim Little
PRESIDENT’S CORNERI spent part of last week-end at the small town in Iowa where I grew up. The town was having its annual celebration with a parade, games in the park, music, free food and lots of class reunions.
I also spent some time talking with an old classmate. When he asked me what I was doing, I told him about Cargill Cares Retirees, especially the volunteer work that we do. His response surprised me. He said, “Why do you volunteer, (and for that matter why would anyone volunteer)?” I found his question surpris-ing, especially given that we were in the middle of a town celebration put on entirely by volunteers, from the volunteer fire department to the march-ing band to the people driving old convertibles in the parade.
His question continued to haunt me. Why do I volunteer? Why would anyone volunteer? The more I thought about this, I finally found an answer I like. The answer is: To make someone else’s life a little better. (The fact that your life also becomes a little richer in the process is merely an added bonus).

Meet the CCR PatronsBy Jim Little
Many of the younger CCR Retirees haven’t heard about Patrons. Patrons are past volunteers who have reached the age of 80 or for health reasons are no longer able to volunteer. If you feel you qualify as a Patron, please let us know. A turkey certificate is sent to each Patron household just as it is for the active volunteers as a way of saying thanks for keeping the volunteer effort going at Cargill.

Southern Caribbean Cruise Feb 16-26, 2011By Mike Lilly
Join fellow Cargill retirees on a fascinating journey through the Southern Caribbean aboard Holland America’s ms Noordam. St. Thomas and St. Maarten are on the schedule as well as a Half Moon Cay, a private paradise in the Bahamas. This ten day cruise departs from Ft. Lauderdale and includes St. Lucia and Barbados.
This trip was selected by Cargill retirees who attended the travel seminar presented by Lori Martz with AAA Travel on April 22nd.

On Thursday, August 5th forty-four Cargill Cares Retirees spent a beautiful afternoon competing in the annual CCR golf outing held again this year at Timber Creek Golf Course in Watertown, MN.
After 18 holes of golf the participants had a chance to greet old friends and business associates during social hour. After social hour the Timber Creek staff served delicious steak or chicken dinners to all in attendance.
The golf competition events were won by Bill Porter with low gross score, Frank St Lawrence won low net and Jack Burkhalter carded the fewest putts.
Golf Outing Attendees Enjoy Fun Afternoon!By Joe Fournier
Those attendees who didn’t score low enough in the golf competition won either $10 or $20 gift cards in the door prize drawing. In the grand prize drawing, Gene Moen and Frank St Lawrence each won golf certificates donated by the Rush Creek Golf Club, a 18-hole champi-onship golf course located in Maple Grove.
Additionally, the Thursday Retiree Golfers recognized the work of Joe Fournier and Ron (Jake) Jacobson for all their work organizing the weekly retiree golf events and this tournament. Joe and Jake were each present-ed a trophy and generous gift certificates. Thank you Joe and Jake.

Habitat for Humanity 2010 build in Hopkins, MNBy Mike Lilly
Cargill Retirees will be joining Cargill employees again this year in Hopkins to build a Habitat For Humanity home near Cargill’s Excelsior Crossings office. Construction begins on Sept 20 through November 19th for a nine week build. Cargill will schedule up to 19 employees per day and retirees will have up to 3 con-struction workers per day. Retirees will also be on hand daily to serve food to the twenty plus workers.

Victorian Christmas Mark your calendars!!By Lois Tolentino
We have a one day trip scheduled for Wednesday, December 1, 2010.
A Victorian Christmas in Stillwater.
We will leave Cargill at 12:15 PM and arrive in historic Stillwater at 1:15PM.
We begin at the Lowell Inn where we’ll look through some of the guest rooms furnished in the 19th and 20th century style. We’ll then have lunch at the Lowell Inn better known as “Mt Vernon of the Midwest”.
We will experience Stillwater’s Victorian Christmas by touring two historic homes decorated for the holiday season.
We leave Stillwater at 5:00 PM. During our return the bus will take us into downtown St Paul and around Rice Park to see the display of Christmas lights presented by Minnesota’s Capitol City.
A letter will be sent during October with the registra-tion form. The cost will be $57.00 each. This will be a perfect way to start the Christmas season.

On a hot and muggy August weekend twenty two Cargill retirees signed up to officiate bocce ball and golf events in Maple Grove and Oakdale. The special athletes are there to have fun. They are also serious and focused on scoring their best to earn an Olympic Medal.

United Way Minneapolis Headquarters Campaign October 25 - 29, 2010October 25 – 5:00-7:30 pm at Excelsior CrossingsFor the launch of our Cargill headquarters campaign week and to spark enthusiasm and involvement, a kick-off event will be held on October 25 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. at Excelsior Crossings. Cargill associates and retirees are invited to attend. The theme will be the 1960’s to celebrate Cargill’s involvement with United Way for 60 years and raising $67 million over the last ten years alone.
Online Auction – October 25th - 29thCargill’s successful and popular online auction is once again part of the 2010 United Way fundraising initiative at headquarters. All employees and retirees are invited to participate in a lively week of bidding to benefit our community. The annual auction features hundreds of items including tickets to sporting events, unique foods and dinners, theme gift baskets, and personal services. Bidding opens on October 25.
Again this year, retirees will be able to bid on auction items via an external link that will be announced via email prior to the beginning of auction.
If you have items to donate and would like a form sent to you, please contact the CCR office at 952-742-6188. Donations are tax deductible within IRS guidelines and you’ll receive a receipt for your donation. Items will be accepted now through October 11.
Cargill Retirees Cheer on the Twins at Target FieldBy Mike Lilly
On a perfect summer afternoon thirty Cargill retirees boarded a bus for Target Field in late June. The Twins went on to beat the Detroit Tigers. Justin Morneau lit up the scoreboard with the longest home run ever hit at the new stadium. The game was sold out and the Twins have sold out for the rest of the summer.
When Cargill Cares Retirees announced the block of thirty seats, retirees quickly requested 90 seats. Fortunately Bobby Pascaly with the Twins lined up sixty additional seats for our group on September 22nd when the Twins take on the Cleveland Indians.
If you missed this year’s Twins events, look for Cargill Cares Retirees to be booking another game in 2011.
Metro “Children’s Water Festival” - Volunteers?By Jim Mickus
The 2010 Children’s Water Festival will again be held at the State Fair Grounds. The date is Wednesday, September, 29. We have need four volunteers for the morning session, 9:30 AM till noon and the afternoon session, noon till 2:30 PM. Free lunch is available to volunteers at either session. The duties are to man the demonstrations of Acid Rain, Soil Percolation or the Enviroscape. Easy duties and fun work to interact with 5th graders on the use and conservation of our most valuable resource - “WATER”.

Hello Retirees!
Cargill’s 2010 United Way campaign at headquarters is set for October 25-29 and I invite you to participate.
Cargill has been running a United Way campaign for 60 years which is why David Dines, my campaign vice chair, and I chose the theme “Dare to Dream, Join the Team, Celebrating 60 years of LIVING UNITED.” LIVING UNITED means giving, volunteering or advocating so that people have the building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.
Reflecting back on my first United Way campaign, when I joined Cargill and began contributing to the effort, I remember thinking, ‘We’re helping so many people, and we’re having fun doing it!’ So much has changed at Cargill and in our communities since then. But what hasn’t changed is this: United Way continues to be an effective and smart way to help more people for a greater, positive impact.
We all can be proud of Cargill’s legacy of United Way support. The annual campaign helps us live out our commitment to invest in and engage with communities where we live and work. Last year, the campaign raised $12.6 million because of the caring spirit of employees and retirees, and the generosity of business units, facilities, the Cargill Foundation and Cargill corporate giving.
This year, as we celebrate 60 years of goodwill and leadership, let’s dare to dream of cities without hunger and homelessness. Let’s dare to dream of kids and adults who won’t have to live with violence in their homes or in their neighborhoods. Let’s dare to dream of another successful campaign that helps as many people as possible achieve their dreams. Our goal is to raise $13 million at over 210 locations across Canada and the United States. Let’s dare to dream big - come join our team!

Three River ParksUpcoming Volunteer Events By John Tschumperlin
On Saturday, October 2nd, CCR volunteers will help col-lect native wildflower seeds at Carver Park Reserve. Carver Park is located on the west edge of the metro area in Victoria on County Road 11. The harvested seeds are used to reseed areas in various parks. This enables the Park District to save money as they will not need to purchase seeds.
Seed collectors work in open prairie areas and collect seed by hand. Training and collection bags are furnished at the site. Light garden gloves are recommended and you might consider car-rying water with you.
Time commitment is 2 or 4 hours. Collection times on October 2nd are either 10:00 a.m. – noon, or 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. You may sign up for both times if you wish.
Also in October (date yet to be set) we will pick up litter along a two mile section of the Dakota Rail Regional Trail. Our section runs through downtown Mound. We plan on doing this on some week day morning in mid-October.

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC)By Lois Tolentino
On July 27, 2010, 41 CCR volunteers gathered at the Chanhassen FMSC facility to prepare packages of nutritious meals to be shipped to countries around the world to feed the hungriest children. We packaged 8,208 meals in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, which will feed 22 kids for 1 year. Thank goodness for air conditioning as the temp outside was about 90 degrees. We had 3 new volunteers to FMSC which is always nice.
Donations are always welcome. A simple bag of food-which provides meals for six children-costs around $1.15 to pro-duce and 94 percent of all donations to FMSC go directly toward the food program.

We are scheduled to volunteer at the EAGAN facility on November 18th from 9:30-11:30. The calling tree will not be used. If you are interested, please call me (Lois) @ 763-537-6051or email [email protected] and your name will go on the list.
