shopportunity! enChanting the ConsuMerKate Newlin, Principal of Kate Newlin Consulting

In this thought provoking and compelling speech, Kate Newlin distills remarkable shopper trend insights detailing exactly what consumers are really shopping for when they shop: The need behind the needs. Based on a decade of listening to consumers under hypnosis describe their shopping disappointments and joys, she provides a tactical blueprint to begin the process of going beyond the shopping experience to catch the next wave: Shopping Enchantment. Enchantment is a mandate that requires a fundamental reevaluation of the critical role played by visual display and merchandising on the front line of the battle for consumer captivation.

All visual merchandisers know, there’s nothing like seeing a couture dress displayed on a new mannequin or experiencing the magic and wonder of a holiday window display. The trouble is, these fantastic visual presentations typically have very short lives, only lasting until the visual merchandiser who created them comes up with their next great idea. In this session, we’ll discuss what it takes to make great visual displays and actually get those displays noticed, and more importantly, covered by the industry’s leading trade publications - securing each one of these displays or projects a permanent place in visual merchandising history.

fooD is fashionPaola Marques, Principal, GH+ADebbie Kalisky, Director of Retail Development, GH+A

Fashion and food are converging, driven by the largest demographic shifts shaping the North American retail marketplace. Fashion retailers have sought alliances with food and beverage brands to sell or serve in their stores, thereby reinforcing the connection between the brands. The food love affair renaissance, particularly of curated quality food, has led to the food sector becoming the hot new retail niche. Food is the new retail lifeline.

With the recent advent of the food hall in North America, inspired from the great traditional European food halls in Europe’s most prestigious department stores, upscale offerings can be consumed on the premises or sold as prepared meals to go. This has created food destinations where engaging, knowledgeable foodies share their passion with a captive audience. Join GH+A’s Paola Marques and Debbie Kalisky as they explore this upcoming trend from a retail designer’s perspective.

PaVeA.R.E./POPAI is proud to administer the Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE), which is the educational foundation for the retail environments industry. PAVE is a vital and effective organization that enables young talent to build successful careers in all aspects of the retail industry. Our vision is to cultivate students and educators through financial assistance, top industry thinking, inspiration and mentorship. This is accomplished through projects, seminars, workshops, and annual fundraising events like the PAVE Gala and the GlobalShop Opening Night Party with proceeds dedicated to educational programs and projects benefiting students. During 2015, PAVE will have awarded over $150,000 to students, educators and schools.

Winners of the PAVE Student Design Competition and the Rising Star recipients will be recognized the first evening of the Retail Design Collective at the PAVE Annual Gala. A special student session will be held at the Retail Design Collective headquarters on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 2:00 p.m. (read more on p. 7).

For more details about how you can get involved in PAVE, visit paveinfo.org or email [email protected].
