Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may we experience

together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our worship service

is designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you will

find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available. Leaders: Pastor Nathan Strutz and Vicar Eric Melso Pianist: Elizabeth Strutz Cantor: Larry Dilgard

Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front of the Christian Worship hymnal located under the pew chairs.

We will begin by watching the December 2015 edition of the WELS Connection

Stewardship Commitment Update As of Sunday, November 22nd, RLC members have returned 26 Stewardship of Time & Talent commitment forms, and 36 Stewardship of Treasure forms. If you haven’t yet completed these forms, we ask you to please complete them and drop them off in the baskets in the narthex or place them in the offering basket during worship. As was discussed during the stewardship Bible studies, there is benefit in pausing to recognize the blessings we all receive from the Lord, and planning our grateful response. Our council uses these commitment forms for budgeting evangelism, Christian education, Bible studies, Vicar program, worship, fellowship activities, synod mission offerings, Sunday School and Pre-school. They also use the Time and Talents commitments to provide committee leaders with volunteer lists. Blank forms and envelopes are still available on the table in the narthex as well. -Bill Baumann, Stewardship Chairman

CONFESSION

Leader: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.

(Silence for reflection)

ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

Leader: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the way for your only Son. By his coming give us strength in our conflicts and shed light on our path through the darkness of this world; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen. Please be seated

Page 15

We join in the Lord’s Prayer: LORD’S PRAYER

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not in to temptation but, deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. PRAYER OF GRACE Leader: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME

Leader: Dear Friends in Christ, Athena Young has requested to become a member of Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church by transfer from a congregation within our fellowship. She is truly convinced that the Word is taught in its truth and purity and that the Sacraments are administered according to their institution by Christ in this church.

At this time I would like to introduce you to your church family and offer you the right hand of fellowship and love, acknowledging you as a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. You are invited to join us in the reception of the Lord’s Supper and to participate in all the other blessings of salvation, which God

has given to his Church, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Members of Resurrection, Athena Young has come before you and the pastor of this congregation and now has been publicly received as a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. May the God of all grace, preserve and strengthen Athena in the true faith that she may remain steadfast in the Gospel until the end and receive the crown of eternal life. Welcome her as your sister in Christ.

Her sponsor, Grace Neitzel, has volunteered to help Athena stay close to Jesus, to stay in contact with Jesus’ Word, to help her to connect with Jesus’ people here at Resurrection and to help her find ways to use her gifts in service to Christ and his body.

Leader: Grace, do you promise to carry out these roles according to the strength Christ gives? If so answer, yes, and I ask God to help me.

Grace: Yes, and I ask God to help me.

Leader: Let us stand for prayer:

Lord God, Heavenly Father, we thank and praise you for your great goodness in bringing Athena to the knowledge of your Son Jesus Christ through instruction in the Word and Holy Baptism and to enable her by your Holy Spirit to believe with her heart and confess with her mouth your saving Name. Give her strength and daily increase faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that she may remain faithful to you and you alone. In Jesus’ name we pray.

People: Amen.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: MALACHI 3:1-4 NIV

1 “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Who is he, this King of glory?* The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory.

SECOND LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 1:3-8 NIV

Thanksgiving and Prayer 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God. VERSE OF THE DAY

GOSPEL LESSON: LUKE 3:1-6 NIV

John the Baptist Prepares the Way 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the coun-try around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. 6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”

CONFESSION OF FAITH - Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen. Please be seated CHILDREN’S MESSAGE (all the children are invited to join at the altar area for a devotion)

SERMON BASED ON: PHILIPPIANS 1:3-8

How does Pastor feel about you?

Questions to consider while hearing the sermon: 1. Why do TV portrayals of pastors hurt? 2. How does pastor feel about you in prayer? 3. Does pastor always pray for you perfectly? What about you for your brothers and sisters? 4. How did God begin a good work in you? 5. What partnership do we share? 6. I have you in my heart. React. 7. What were Paul's circumstances? Could that happen today? Soon? 8. How does Pastor long for you? 9. What affection does Pastor have for you? For further discussion/Vine and Branches groups: Talk about portrayals of pastors you have seen. Do they match your reality? Did pastor get too personal in this sermon? Be honest. Would you want your son to be a pastor? Can you think of someone you could encourage to consider serving as a pastor?
