Résumés and CV’s: What You Need To Know
Your Résumé and CV (Curriculum Vitae) are important materials in the development of your career. Both terms refer to a document outlining you experience, and are used somewhat interchangeably depending on the situa괗�on.
Résumé
On average, employers spend 30 seconds reviewing a resume. This document should briefly emphasize who you are, what you’ve done, and what you have to offer.
A résumé is the term most oٍ�en used to refer to a document outlining relevant experience towards a job. This can include your educa괗�on, previous jobs, internships, and a list of skills. For most posi괗�ons, the term résumé refers to a document of no more than a page, but for different fields it can refer to a much more extensive document. Whenever applying for a posi괗�on that is outside your field, do some research into the industry standards so that you include the right amount of informa괗�on.
CV
A CV (short for Curriculum Vitae and some괗�mes referred to just as a Vitae), is a more extensive document outlining experience. It is considered an “academic” document; outlining milestones in different categories of professional development, rather than specific skills learned through jobs or educa괗�on. It is most commonly used by ar괗�sts to outline their experience as artists ; including exhibi괗�on history, residencies, awards, ar괗�sts’ talks, and media coverage. If you are on a career track where you are trying to seek a posi괗�on in Higher Educa괗�on, you will need a CV that also includes teaching posi괗�ons and other academic qualifica괗�ons.

How to Know When to Use Which Document: Who is asking you?
Since the terms can at 괗�mes be used interchangeably, it is important to think about who is looking at this document. If it’s for a curator, gallerist, or person interested in purchasing your artwork, use a CV. If it is a poten괗�al employer or client, use a résumé.
Don’t get confused when a curator asks you for your “ar괗�st résumé” or when an employer in the UK asks for your “Vitae”. Think about the situa괗�on and you will choose the right document!
How do I choose what style of résumé to use?
There are many different styles of résumés out there. It is important to understand that all of them have strengths and weaknesses, so the key is knowing your audience. It says, this is who I am, design‐wise, and personal style‐wise. If you are applying for a design job, this is a perfect opportunity to show off your
skills. That same résumé might not go over as well if you were applying for a more tradi괗�onal office job. The key to any good résumé is that the informa괗�on it contains should be relevant to the posi괗�on you are applying for, and always easy to find and read. Are there conventions for a CV?
There are certain conven괗�ons to the informa괗�on contained in a CV, and they tend to be a more “conserva괗�ve” document in appearance. Visual branding elements such as designed le椪erheads are some괗�mes used, but usually they are laid out in a straighيحorward manner.
In general, we promote both a func괗�onal and exhibi괗�on resume for ar괗�sts. Some괗�mes you will need to combine the two. Other 괗�mes, it is best to use them separately. The func괗�onal resume focuses on the organiza괗�on of your skill‐sets, as opposed to the chronology of your paid employment. This method highlights the breadth of your professional experience overall while emphasizing your strengths. The exhibi괗�on resume serves as a record of your exhibi괗�ons, awards, grants, residencies, and publica괗�ons. Identify Your Professional Experience
The term professional experience refers to any and all paid and unpaid experiences you’ve had in which you have implemented skills that are relevant to the workplace. For ar괗�sts, this category can be very broad. Make sure you include ar괗�st collabora괗�ons, marke괗�ng and communica괗�on experience, any leadership roles in clubs, organiza괗�ons, jobs, classes, volunteer work, and par괗�cipa괗�on in extracurricular ac괗�vi괗�es. Use ac괗�on words and avoid the use of “I”. Be specific and quote numbers when you can (i.e. Managed group of 10 staff, Organized event for 400+ a椪endees) Try to synthesize your skills in list format as opposed to full sentences. Include the organiza괗�on name, the role/괗�tle you held, the city and state, and the year (not the month).
You may not use all of these details in your final resume, but it’s important to have gathered this informa괗�on in one place. The most common mistake in ar괗�st’s resumes is thinking that the skills you employ in your everyday art prac괗�ce are not transferrable to a professional resume. Err on the side of elabora괗�ng too much if you are unsure how to represent your experience. A staff member in career services can always help you edit it down.
Categorize Your Skills
Organize your professional experience into 3‐7 subject categories, disregarding chronology. Common skill categories for ar괗�sts include: Computer, Crea괗�ve Technical, Educa괗�on, Leadership, Communica괗�ons, and Management. Refer oٍ�en to the a椪ached Skills Identification List to become familiar with professional terms to describe your experience. Be specific and concise.
Format It Effectively
Now it’s 괗�me to think crea괗�vely and analy괗�cally about the informa괗�on that you’ve gathered. Look at your lists. How can you organize the informa괗�on simply and clearly so that someone can quickly scan your resume and get a sense of your strengths? Use bold type, italics, bullets, and spacing to present yourself in an organized manner.
Also think about the forma鈞ng and order of informa괗�on within your main categories. Does it make sense to list your organiza괗�on's first, or the roles/괗�tles that you held first? Have you been involved in many organiza괗�ons engaged in social jus괗�ce work? Have you traveled oٍ�en? Have you been director of more than one project?
Tips
Check the final draٍ� for spelling and grammar errors!
Use a consistent font and forma鈞ng style.
Research keywords related to your field. For example, if you’re trying to highlight a developed interna괗�onal knowledge on your resume‐ google interna괗�onal organiza괗�ons and job descrip괗�ons. Familiarize yourself with the “language” of that field. Insert these terms into your resume and cover le椪er when relevant.
Look around the web at resumes of others in your industry, or at those who are doing things that you’re interested in. How are they organizing and forma鈞ng their resumes/informa괗�on? Are there pa椪erns and trends in what seems a priority in that field?
Get a second opinion – have a couple professionals look it over!
Post it Online
There are numerous sites on which to post your resume for professional visibility. Many career websites have a forum for you to create a professional profile. Be wary of the inten괗�on of the site when choosing where to put your resume. Also make sure that it is always updated and current. Below are just a few prominent sites where you can post your resume.

Then, use your brainstormed content to create or update your resume. 2. SORT & EVALUATE CONTENT
● Highlight: What experiences or skills are most relevant to the job(s) you’re applying to? ● Choose a format: Skills‐based or experience‐based resume, or CV?
○ Use a skills‐based resume when your experience is primarily academic. ○ Use an experience‐based (chronological) resume if you already have significant

● Sort: Look at sample resumes in the format you’ve chosen to figure out where on the page informa괗�on should go. Group like skills together. Most important/relevant informa괗�on goes first.
● Write: Short verb‐driven phrases explaining your relevant experience. (See samples.) ● Evaluate: Cut the least‐relevant or oldest informa괗�on; make sure everything fits on one page.
