RE: Architect I Position

Please accept this letter and attached resume as my formal application for the Architect I full-time position at VOA Washington D.C. As a recent graduate of Louisiana State University’s School of Architecture, I have been part of several winning design competition teams where I learned how to effectively lead diverse teams and participate in exciting and dynamic team environments. These student competitions along with my studies at the Washington Alexandria Architecture Consortium (WAAC), have given me the experience of working in a fast-paced and rigorous environment.

While studying at the WAAC, I had the opportunity to work on a team of landscape architecture students on a competition for a new Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Norfolk, Virginia. We wanted to employ innovative and environmentally conscious design concepts that could act as catalysts for the protection and restoration of the Bay. As lead designer, I was responsible for ensuring the seamless integration of the coastal environment and architecture to provide a didactic experience for visitors. Our entry took first place honors at the WAAC and advanced to Virginia Tech University’s main campus to clench second place among thirty entries.

My experience and skills from previous marketing and research positions would complement both the design and business side of your D.C. office. From these positions, I have acquired a richer understanding of working with a client and how that dynamic relationship can bring about better solutions. With my architectural education, and applicable work experience have served as preparation for thriving in the forward thinking practice at VOA Associates. I look forward to hearing from you soon to discuss a full-time position at your D.C. office. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, LaQuinton A. Nimox

Project_01St. Louis Urban Monastery Design Studio X, Spring 2012

This project calls for the design of a Benedictine Monastery in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. At a prime location along the Gateway Mall, the monastery would become both a beacon and source for nourishment to both the monks and hungry. The final design centers around a tripartite concept of nature, sacredness, and secularity. As a result, the relationship between the monk’s cloister and the hungry’s soup kitchen garden became the driving force for the overall scheme. The building form physically captures this collision between the sacred and the profane.

Project_02Ashby MARTA Station and Visitor Center 2011 NOMA National Design Competition

Design Team: Kevin Nyguyen, Kim Nyguyen, Ivan O’garro, Elizabeth Galan, Erica Geromini

The success of the Civil Rights Movement stems from the emergence of multiple leaders, some less recognized than others, working in concert to attain equality for all. The design draws upon the ideas of multiplicity and aggregation as the impetus to social gathering, pedestrian circulation, programmatic arrangement, and architectural form. As the main transportation hub of the area, the proposed project encourages pedestrian traffic on multiple levels on the site. The ground level hosts a variety of open and intimate public spaces for neighborhood residents and visitors to gather. This serves as a destination for visitors in the greater Atlanta region, while simultaneously providing public areas and green spaces for residents of Vine City.

Project_03Chesapeake Bay Environmental Education Center 2011 Virginia Tech Student Design Competition - Second Place

Design Team: Maragaret Amori, Wei Cao

The project called for team collaboration with two landscape architecture students to design an environmental center near Virginia Beach, VA for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The design intent of our project was to create a didactic landscape by providing tangible connections to the ecology of the site. Two types of ecologies are revealed: hydraulic cycles and wildlife habitation. Hydraulic cycles revealed in the site include stormwater filtration and sedimentation, both of which are indicative of processes occurring throughout the larger Chesapeake Bay region. Our proposed design demonstrates potential strategies which can be implemented in other areas throughout the bay.

Project_04Chapel to Nature: Place for Memory + Loss Design Studio IV, Fall 2009

The challenge of this project was to create a non-denominational space that serves as a space for Memory and Loss. This structure is designed as a landscape focusing device--a mechanism through which the experience of this coastal area, from the reconstruction of the canal to the catastrophic loss of the wetlands is made manifest. The design of the Memory and Loss spaces are informed by the idea of transition from mass to void; this reflects the connection of the coast where the structure resides. It constructed in a way that emphasizes a transition from a closed minded society who ignores the issue of coastal wetland loss to a more open-minded community that embraces the idea of protecting this priceless resource.

Weekly drawings assignments were coordinated to give students a full range of drawing and sketching experience. The drawings explored various techniques and employed multiple mediums, such as shaded pencil sketches, penned line drawings, and quick marker sketches. Emphasis was given to capturing the essence of the view and overall experience of the subject.
