MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLEThe Casella Monitor ML 9810 Ozone (O3)Analyser is a U.V. photometer which accurately and reliably measures ozone concentrations in ambient air.

Upon entering the pneumatic system, the gassample containing ozone passes through aselective ozone scrubber which converts theozone to oxygen. The sample, without ozone, passes through an absorption cell where adetector measures the amount of 254nm U.V. radiation absorbed. This reference measurement is defined as I0 and its valueincludes any other gases and particulate matter which may be present in the sample.

Upon completion of the reference measurement, the gas sample containingozone bypasses the ozone scrubber andgoes directly into an absorption cell. Thissample measurement of U.V. radiation with ozone is defined as I.

The analysers microprocessor uses the Beer-Lambert relationship to calculate theozone concentration using I0 and I.

The ozone concentration, automatically corrected for temperature and pressurechanges, is displayed in ppm or mg/m3.Featuring a drop down front panel for easyaccess includes a built-in data display fortrends, averages, status and historical information in digital and graphic format.

User selectable menu screens provide accessto all available options and instrument setup.

The optimum measuring range is automatically selected for the display and RS 232 outputs for each parameter.

Values are reported as floating point numbersavoiding range selection and reporting.

Extended Memory capacity is incorporated in all ML9800 series analysers providingrecorded data to be downloaded on site orremotely utilizing MECOMM utility software orany computer terminal program.

SYSTEM INTEGRATIONAnalogue Output:Providing both 0-, 2-, 4-20mA as well asselectable voltage output, stand alone as well as multi analyser rack systems, interfacewith both data logger and recorder acquisition units.

Digital Output:Utilising RS 232 port, data-status-controls areutilised either as Multi-drop shared betweenanalysers or directly with external acquisitionsystems. Various software packages facilitateease of data manipulation.

    FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

The ML 9820 uses a long life infrared (IR)source and advanced materials in the gasfilter wheel for trouble free operation andminimum maintenance.

Sample flow rate is variable and allows forfaster purge during zero and span cyclesand faster return to sampling mode. Thevariable flow rate enables the analyser toget more data points at steady state zeroand span conditions.

Access through the front panel for routinemaintenance operations, such as filterchanges, eliminates the need to remove theinstrument from a rack or take the cover off.

The analyser accommodates all analoginterface requirements without additionaloutput boards or voltage to current converters.

Internal vacuum pump and built-in sampleinlet particulate filter.

    THEORY OF OPERATION

The ML 9820 family of analysers are basedon gas filter correlation spectroscopy whichprovides for accurate and reliable measurements of CO2.

Three separate full scale ranges provide coverage of a wide variety of applications. The three analysers in the family are the98201000-101 ranging from 0-3000 ppm,the 98201000-102 from 0-1500 ppm and the 98201000-103 from 0-750 ppm. Eachanalyser is configured specifically for its operational range at the factory. It is importantto specify the operational range at the time ofpurchase.

The ML 9820 analysers measure theabsorption of infrared radiation (IR) within a folded path measurement cell. Infraredbroadband radiation is passed through arotating gas filter wheel where one filter cellcontains CO2 and another cell contains N2.When the IR radiation passes through theCO2 portion of the wheel, all wavelengths atwhich CO2 can absorb are completelyremoved from the radiation, leaving thosewavelengths that are unaffected by CO2 tocreate a reference beam.

When IR radiation passes through the nitrogen portion of the wheel, CO2-specificwavelengths are not removed from the radiation and a measure beam, which will be attenuated by any CO2 in the sample, iscreated. The rotation of the gas filter wheel, in effect creates a beam which alternatesbetween reference and measure phases.

The alternating beam is passed through amultipass absorption cell (white cell) whereCO2 is monitored by measuring the attenuation of the measurement beam.

Since both the reference and measurephases of the beam have the same source, detector, and optical path, only the amount of CO2 in the sample cell can effect the difference in intensity between the two phases. This methodology results in an instrument that is very insensitive to interferentgases, fluctuations in the IR source, vibrationand accumulation of dust on the optics.

The final concentration of CO2 corrected for temperature and pressure changes, is displayed in units of parts per million (ppm) ormilligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3).

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLEThe Casella Monitor ML 9830 Carbonmonoxide (CO) Analyser is a Non-DispersiveInfrared (NDIR) photometer, which uses GasFilter Correlation (GFC) to measure low concentrations of CO accurately and reliably.

Infrared broadband radiation is passedthrough a rotating gas filter wheel where halfof the wheel contains CO and half containsnitrogen. When the IR radiation passesthrough the CO half of the wheel, all wavelengths at which CO can absorb arecompletely removed from the radiation, leaving those wavelengths that are unaffectedby the CO to create a reference beam. When IR radiation passes through the nitrogen part of the wheel, CO-specific wavelengths are not removed from the radiation and the measure beam, which willbe attenuated by any CO in the sample, iscreated. A single reaction chamber and photomultipliertube (PMT) measure the chemiluminescence(light) produced by the reaction between NOand OZONE.

A common measurement sample is alternately switched either through or around a NO2 to NO converter (heatedmolybdenum). Thus, the instrument alternately measures NO and NOX ( NO +NO2 = NOX ) from the same sample volumeand the difference between the two readingsprovide an accurate computed NO2 valueeven in traffic-intensive locations.

NOX, NO, NO2 concentrations are correctedfor temperature, pressure and flow changesand can be displayed in ppm or mg/m 3.

Featuring a drop down front panel for easyaccess includes a built-in data display fortrends, averages, status and historical information in digital and graphic format.

User selectable menu screens provide accessto all available options and instrument setup.

The optimum measuring range is automatically selected for the display and RS 232 outputs for each parameter.

Values are reported as floating point numbersavoiding range selection and reporting.

Extended Memory capacity is incorporated in all ML9800 series analysers providingrecorded data to be downloaded on site orremotely utilizing MECOMM utility software or any computer terminal program.

SYSTEM INTEGRATIONAnalogue Output:Providing both 0-,2-, 4-20mA as well asselectable voltage output, stand alone as well as multi analyser rack systems, interfacewith both data logger and recorder acquisition units.

The ML 9841 uses a single-channel designfor simplified operation and maximum reliability. A single reaction chamber and photomultiplier tube (PMT) measures thechemiluminescence (light) produced by thereaction between NO and Ozone. The measurement sample is alternately switchedeither through or around a NO2 to NO converter (heated molybdenum). Thus, theinstrument alternately measures NO and NOx(NO plus NO2 = NOx). The differencebetween the two readings provides a computed NO2 value.

Within the ML 9841 we have introduced acarefully designed and optimised 'true-timesample handling procedure' which ensuresthe sample for NO and NOx analysis isalways carried out on the same air sampleand that there are no misleading artefacts dueto stream switching. This also eliminates theneed for any mathematical correction as isnecessary in other competitive units.

The final concentration of NO and NO2, corrected for temperature and pressurechanges, are displayed in units of parts permillion (ppm) or milligrams per cubic meter(mg/m3).

A large built-in graphics data display isdesigned to present trends, averages, statusand historical information in digital and graphic format. User selectable menu screensprovide access to all available options andinstrument set-up.

The ML 9841 automatically selects the optimum measuring range for the display and RS232 outputs for each parameter.Values are reported as floating point numbers, making range selecting and reporting unnecessary. The instrumentincludes an analogue-over-range feature that, when enabled, automatically switches the analysers analogue output to a pre-selectedhigher range.

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLEThe Casella Monitor ML 9850 Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) Analyser is an advanced design analyser which uses U.V. fluorescence technology to measure concentrations of SO2 accurately and reliably.

The ML 9850 depends on the fluorescentradiation produced by the SO2 moleculeswhen excited by U.V. radiation. The excitationU.V. radiation is measured by the referencedetector and the fluorescent radiation ismeasured by a photomultiplier tube (PMT).The two measurements are compared byratio in a classical dual channel technique tocompensate against the effects of variation insource intensity, optical contamination, andcommon PMT drift characteristics.

Aromatic hydrocarbons are removed by aunique kicker that uses differential partialpressure technique to selectively remove aromatics across the permeable membrane, without influencing the SO2 sample. The finalconcentration of SO2 is corrected for temperature and pressure changes and can be displayed in ppm or mg/m3.
