Results of Groundwater Characterisation in the
International Elbe River Basin District

Groundwater
• Groundwater account for 97% of freshwater
• 50 – 90 % of the river flow come from groundwater
• 75 % of EU inhabitants depend on groundwater for water supply
• Terrestrial ecosystem and surface water are affected by groundwater
Why Groundwater?
Groundwater Bodies Characterisation
• Delineation of groundwater bodies• Characteristics of groundwater bodies• General character of overlying strata• Significant pressures for groundwater• Assessement of groundwater bodies
(achieving of environmental objectives 2015)
• Preliminary identification of GW bodies with less stringent objectives
Groundwater Bodies Characterisation
• Different aproaches and methods
• Comparable results
• Evaluated anthropogennic pressures:– Groundwater abstractions– Point sources of pollution– Diffuse sources of pollution– Other pressures

Results of Characterisation• Groundwater abstractions are not
essential problem• Point sources of pollution – old
contaminated sites are especially significant
• Diffuse sources of pollution – agriculture is significant pressure
• Significant other pressures – mainly minning areas (former and recent exploitation)
Less Stringent Groundwater Bodies - Quantity
Less Stringent Groundwater Bodies - Chemical
Less Stringent Groundwater Bodies
• Preliminary identification only
• Predominantly impact of exploitation
