RestaurantsThink Thailand and you think of excellent Thai food; think

Thailand again but think this time of the world’s cuisine readilyavailable in most parts of urban Thailand.

There can be no doubt that Thai food has now conqueredthe world and is one of its most desired eating experiences andwhere better to sample Thai cuisine than in Thailand itself.

Westerners may be familiar with Thai food, because it seemsthat even the smallest of towns has at least one Thai restaurant. But until you have eaten Thai food in a Thai manner and haveit prepared with fresh and authentic ingredients then no onecan truly say they have tastes the delights of this country’sdiverse dishes.

Of course every one of Thailand’s major cities, towns andholiday destinations can boast more than their fare share ofexcellent Thai restaurants that specialised in everything fromsimple country cooking to Royal Thai Cuisine, or even justone type of food like Phad Thai or Som Tum.

Thai cuisine:

The Thai cuisine is known for its balance of fivefundamental flavors in each dish or the overall meal - hot(spicy), sour, sweet, salty and bitter (optional). Althoughpopularly considered as a single cuisine, Thai food is reallybetter described as four regional cuisines corresponding to thefour main regions of the country: Northern, Northeastern (orIsan), Central and Southern. Southern cuisine, for example, usually contains lots of heat from chillies while northeasterntends to include lime juice in the ingredients.

You won’t find it difficult to eat in Bangkok as Bangkokiansalways seem to be grazing if not in a full meal then on snacks. And all across the city you will find all kinds of outlets readyto feed the Thai and farang appetite. These range from theubiquitous road-side stalls to high cuisine outlets.

Perhaps the liveliest location to eat is on the famous KhaoSan Road, once the haunt of budget travellers and round-the-world back-packers Khao San has been gentrified of late, although you will still meet many colourful and young travellersfrom all over the world. But the area is becoming a bit of agourmet secret with interesting eateries catering to the widevariety of tastes and nationalities that congregate in this area.

The Silk Bar and Restaurant is a relative new-comer to thescene, it can be a lively place on times with its massive outsidescreen showing the best of European and Asian sport. Drinks

are reasonably priced and the menu is broad and multi-purpose,you can choose from some Isan favourites like glass noodlesalad, papaya salad, tom yam goong, or Western familiarburgers and club sandwiches. Good value for money are theThai green and red salads.

Heading further down the road you will come across SunsetStreet an effervescent little cul-de-sac that epitomises the newKhao San, it is arty, colourful and vibrant. You will find itsnamesake the Sunset Street restaurant, the Sabai Bar and aStarbucks occupying a traditional and old Thai house, it haslive classical music. The Sunset Street is a welcome respitefrom the sometimes hectic pace of Khao San with many of thebuildings over a century old; this is the place to get away fromthe cubist concrete jungle.

The Sunset Street Restaurant has a menu that is similar tothe Silk Bar’s but just a little more ‘meat’ to it. You can choosefrom Western side of the menu from a list that includes Frenchonion soup, spaghetti Bolognese, pork chops and the like.Glancing down the Thai side you will notice a large choice ofsea food, but other Thai dishes are available as well.

Riverside:

Some of the best restaurants are to be found in Bangkok’stop class hotels and many of them have gained an internationalreputation for their fare.

Among the most famous of Bangkok’s restaurants is LeNormandie at the Oriental Hotel. The bywords at this restaurantare impeccable service, elegant ambience and exceptionalcellar. Situated in the Garden Wing of The Oriental, Bangkok, its full a la carte French menu specialises in exemplary seafoodand meat dishes, although there’s always an alternative but noless exquisite set menu, both at lunchtime and dinner.

If you want to stay firmly with your feet in the Western cuisine camp you can’t do betterthan another new-comer to Khao San and that is Oh My Cod. The name leaves little to theimagination because Britain’s favourite dish is available using local snapper or traditional NorthSea Cod. The deep fried and battered fish invariably accompanied by thick cut chips (Frenchfries to most of the rest of the world) and a generous serving of delicious mushy peas, a delicacythat you either like or loath. Be a proper Brit and wash it down with a bottle of beer, but in thiscase try Beer Lao, a refreshing brew that sets the heart of any true beer lover racing. Otherbeers are available too. Thai food is also available at a very reasonable price.

Phra Nakorn Bar is purely Thai sits demurely on the other side of Khao San being discreteon Thanon Rathadamnoen, look for the Siam City Bank and you will not miss it. Located in aconverted town house it has four floors of which the top is an open air roof terrace where youcan chat and eat in peace. The menu is fabulous with delights like deep fried het-hommushrooms, and papaya salad with fresh shrimps both great starters. Try the black bandedTrvally and the Gaeng Som.

As the name suggests the cuisine is Italian and authentic atthat. Order an antipasto all’ Italiana for two and what you getis a large platter of cold salami, bologna, ham and other coldcuts, graced by slices of a milky, mild mozzarella caprese, roasted bell peppers, grilled eggplant, olives and otherassortments. A treat and almost a meal in itself, the Salmoneallo champagne is a dish that will satisfy the discerning anddemanding tastes of the ancient Roman Gods; it is heavenly.

But the sweet menu excels with the crowning glory goingto the tiramisu drenched with espresso topped with mascarponeand dusted with fresh cocoa. A wide selection of wine is alsoavailable.

Again this is not a budget breaking dining experience ataround 3000 baht for two.

Harmonique on Charoenkrung Soi 34 is a charming Thairestaurant in a charmingly converted Thai house that hascharacter pouring from every joist and joint. Besides the indoordining area there are small open air areas that are pure Thaiallure.

The cheerful staff and the warm atmosphere make you wantto linger a little longer over dinner and drinks. The food is

Models, actors, celebrities and the great and good of Thaihigh society are often to be seen amongst the diners. Butbeware there is a strict dress code here, no short sleeved shirts, short trousers, or sandals, and in the evening you are morelikely to get in wearing a dinner jacket.

Of course this superb hotel has other dining options too,Lord Jim’s, named after Joseph Conrad’s character, and therestaurant serves great sea food dishes, and is renowned for itssushi and sashimi dishes. For a different dining experience, one that puts you under the stars and next to the river try theRiverside or Verandah both offer excellent food at reasonableprices.

Angelini’s at the Shangri-La is an Italian restaurant withviews of the hotel’s garden and the Chao Phraya River. It is agrand restaurant offering both fine dining and less fussyoptions. Its Il mercato del pesce is a selection of shellfish andseafood fresh from the market presented on ice. The tuna andavocado tartare and the marinated salmon with antipastifollowed by pasta or risotto is not to be missed. But if you domiss it try the grilled Phuket lobster with in season vegetablesa treat for eye and palate.

Even though it is a busy restaurant at both lunch time andin the evening the staff maintain a level of service that isprofessional without being overwhelming or too personal.

Giorgio’s is a bright, spacious modern room with brick wallspierced by windows giving views of the Chao Phraya River. The relatively unadorned restaurant falls into the category ofsimple minimalist chic.

deliciously Thai and as hot or as mild as you want it to be.Despite the small number of staff each one is attentive andcertainly keep a watchful eye on your needs. A decent mealhere will cost about 1,500 baht.

The Gallery Caf is an independent restaurant on SoiCaptain Bush, just off New Road. The atmosphere is brightand open that creates a very pleasant dining experience.Additional and unusual extras are the availability of Thaimassage at an upstairs salon and the Thai crafts shopincorporated into the restaurant.

The menu is extensive and again concentrates on excellentquality sea food and Thai curries. As you would expect theservice is efficient and unobtrusive.

A meal for two will not set you back more than 1000 baht. There are many more excellent independent and hotel based

restaurants on the banks of the Chao Phraya a couple morewith sampling are Trader Vic’s at the Bangkok Marriot Resortand Spa this South Pacific themed eatery serves French cuisinein a surrounding of wooden tiki, tropical paintings, voodooicons and all that is reminiscent of South Pacific Island life.

The wonderfully located Supatra River House on Soi WatRakhang overlooks the wildly picturesque Grand Palace itserves Thai food al fresco or in air conditioned comfort. Itoffers a unique dining experience with its excellent views ofRatanakasin. The service is efficient and fast.

Silom area:

Anna’s Caf is a bit of a Bangkok institution with branchesin most areas of the city, but the first was in Soi Sala Deangjust off busy Silom. It is located in a very big converted housewith a nice small garden in the front full of palms and treesthat are gracefully illuminated at night.

Anna’s Caf in Sala Deang is a lunch time favourite of themany office workers in the area. At night it is the haunt of thetrendy and the young. It spacious interior is divided into smalldining areas and the walls decorated with fascinatingphotographs of old Bangkok.

The unprepossessing Banana House is tucked away at theside of the Duangthip Building just a few steps from Silom’sSoi 4, you have to look for it or you may miss it. With littlelavish decoration this first floor restaurant has been servingdiners for over 20 years now. The menu is basic Thai cookingwith a few western dishes to add variety. Here you will findmany old favourites like chicken fried in pandanus leavessauted kana vegetables with salted fish. Fried fish makes alarge part of the menu here and the Fried snakehead fish and

191

Thai herbs has a deep-fried whole fish smothered under aflavourful dressing and a garden’s worth of mint, shallots andother herbs. The western dishes are tailored to appeal to localtastes so it is best to stick to the Thai food. Certainly the dessertmenu is full of favourites like candied egg bananas with coconutcream and the traditional mango and sticky rice.

If you like to have a glass of wine with your meal then youare out of luck as the banana House does not serve alcohol butyou are allowed to bring your own.

Caf de Laos on Silom Soi 19 is in a charming woodenhouse with wall interesting wall hangings and antique lightfixtures giving a nice homely feel to the place. Garden diningis possible around a fish pond.

As you would expect the food is definitely influenced byLaos, Isaan and north-eastern cuisine. Their version of somtam poo nim with the spice papaya salad is definitely worthtrying. Unless you ask the grilled beef to the well done itcomes just a little pink, but this is sliced and laid alongside afiery Isaan sauce, fiery it might be but the taste is pure heaven.Choosing from the vast menu is made easier by pictures of thedishes alongside their names.

The service is professional and personalised it is easy todiscuss your particular wants with the knowledgeable staff.

Eat Me in Soi Pipat 2 is just off Convent Road serves aninternational cuisine the ground floor has a small gallery thathosts rotating art shows. Walking through the gallery will takeyou to the first floor dining area where the choice of indoorsor al fresco dining is yours. The cuisine is best described asAustralian/Pacific rim.

The main courses are also very pleasingly presented with awide variety of shellfish and seafood items. Specialities includespicy chicken with lemongrass and couscous, and medium-rare duck liver with caramelised cassis onion tartlet. The fivelettuce side salad compliment the main dish perfectly. Thedessert of choice is their delicious fresh fruit salad.

The service is professional and friendly, new comers are aswell treated as many of their old regulars.

The Silom area is packed with restaurants that offer finedining at reasonable prices in addition to those mentioned theNaj Restaurant is in another converted wooden Thai house, itis in a little side-soi off Convent Road and opposite the BNHHospital. The food is traditionally Thai and as a service to itswestern clients it flags the more spicy dishes. The food isequaled by the level of attention given by the waiting staff allof whom unobtrusively observe and anticipate your needs. They genuinely want to make your meal one to remember.

There is nothing to match the stunning views of the Siroccoan open-to-the-skies restaurant on the 63rd floor of the StateTower. The menu is international with the ingredients being

192

regularly flown in from Europe and Australia; this is a diningexperience you will never forget. Something else that will beunforgettable is the wine list that includes a 1990 ChateauPetrus at over 130,000 baht a bottle. If your wallet groans atthis price tag other more reasonably priced wines are available.

Another roof top eating venue is the Vertigo at the BanyanTree Hotel, a similar menu and experience awaits theadventurous diner, and for many the Vertigo is a less pressured, more relaxed eating experience. The staff and service at theVertigo are professional and attentive to the extreme, thiscombined with an in depth knowledge of their internationalmenu and wine list provides a truly memorable experience.

If you are staying in this area then the D’Sens at the DusitThani Hotel provides authentic French cuisine in almost palatialsurroundings. As you would expect from the staff of a fivestar hotel the service is excellent, polite and attentive.

Around the corner on Soi Sala Daeng is Zanotti’s Italianrestaurant this with Scoozi’s are almost becoming a Bangkokeating institutions.

Sukhumvit:

Sukhumvit Road is one of Bangkok’s main roads and abusy commercial and entertainment district so you wouldexpect this area to be thronged with restaurants and eateriesand you would not be wrong. Some of Bangkok’s finest andbest known restaurants are to be found along this road.

A Garden serves a European cuisine and is anotherrestaurant located in a charming converted house, diners havethe choice of air-conditioned contemporary comfort or aromantic al fresco setting. The food is European inspired butwith a touch of Thai artistry to give a special and differenttaste. There is a good wine list and the service is friendly butnot over familiar, efficient but not obtrusive and best of all thestaff are knowledgeable.

A L’Etage on Sukhumvit Soi 39 is Located in a smallcomplex of shops and eating places, shaded by trees and plants, that gives this restaurant a Parisian feel enhanced by itscomfortable seating and chic decor. The food is of course,French.

Most of the food products are imported from Europe orAustralia and are freshly prepared daily. As a starter try thefoie gras du chef, pan-fried and served with cranberry sauce, this mouth-watering morsel is not to be missed. For the maincourse braised rabbit with risotto and pumpkin puree is unusualand delicious, and pan-fried monk fish on a plinth of cabbageis also a good choice. Vegetarians are not forgotten either, try

Modapesce brings something different to Bangkok it is anItalian seafood restaurant on Soi 53. It is located in a huge, airy and contemporary house painted in crisp white with largewindows providing views of the huge terrace, garden and pond.Upstairs is a small dining room for private parties. The greaterpart menu is fish and seafood based dishes. Fish is a popularalternative for health-conscious people these days althoughseveral non-seafood items are also available.

The wine list is understandably dominated by Italianvintages and start at 1200 baht a bottle. The staff are attentiveto the needs of their clients.

Rosabieng on Soi 11 occupies a beautiful house withspacious grounds near the end of the soi. Its name means “traindining car” and the railway theme starts out front, with aconverted train car serving as a bar. The house is well decoratedwith a miniature train running through a Swiss village inside aglass showcase.

The restaurant serves authentic Thai cuisine the menuoffering an intriguing combination of fine dining and home-cooked food haut coutured for that special occasion. A goodexample is tom yum nuea toon; braised beef commonly eatenwith noodles is spiced up with local herbs and lime juice tomake a fragrant and flavourful soup.

There is a small selection of both red and white wine atmoderate prices. The service is fast and efficient provided bystaff who know when to step in and when to leave.

The above is just a very short selection of the eating choicesavailable in only three of Bangkok’s busy tourist and businessareas. There are other excellent dining experiences to be hadin the many four and five star hotels and in other parts of

the grilled goat cheese on a bed of baby green salad along withits raspberry dressing is guaranteed to pep up those taste budsand is an excellent introduction to French tastes.

The menu has a recommended wine for each course so thereis no need to fret about choosing the right wine. The staff arewarm and hospitable and attentive. The L’Etage is not cheapbut for around 2,500 baht a person the quality and experienceis beyond compare.

Bourbon Street is Bangkok’s first Cajun/Creole restaurant. It is redolent of a New Orleans dining experience with its simplewooden tables and rattan woven chairs. The wine list is NewWorld. The service is polite and prompt.

Crepes and Co on Soi 22 has quickly become a bit of aBangkok institution it is delightfully located in a house set in agarden. The cuisine is Mediterranean in inspiration and crepe-based by design. The wine list is fairly extensive with thecheapest bottle at under 1000 baht. The staff are young, politeand eager to serve.

Bangkok like Sathorn Road, the Old City, Siam area, China Town and Nonthaburi to name justa very few.

It is not possible to experience the complete range of cuisines and dining experience thatBangkok has to offer but it is certainly a great ambition to try as many as you can. After all finedining, even at Bangkok’s famed and expensive venues will not break the bank or stress thecredit card.

Cooking schools:

The phenomenal popularity of Thai cuisine is gaining inpopularity year by year and in the West eating at a Thairestaurant may be a very expensive venture, so what betterthan cooking your own Thai food in your own kitchen, for thatyou will need to take a cooking course.

Finding a cooking course in Bangkok and Thailand’s othermajor cities is increasingly easy. Many of Bangkok’s besthotels provide short courses on Thai cooking the courses rangefrom watch and learn with demonstrations and talks to hands-on selection of ingredients to preparation to presenting the finalmeal. What ever course you want you will find it.

Three of the longest established are to be found at theOriental Hotel, the Dusit Thani Hotel and the Landmark Hotel.

The famed Oriental Hotel on the banks of the Chao PhrayaRiver conducts four day look and learn courses at its sala acrossthe river from the hotel. The courses are conducted in Englishby Thai and Western chefs.

The Dusit Thani’s Benjarong Royal Thai Cuisine is one ofthe most sophisticated restaurants in Bangkok. Located in thefive star Dusit Thani Hotel, right in the centre of the city. Thecourse runs for twelve weeks on every Saturday morning from9.30 to 12.30. Recipes are drawn from the restaurant’s menuand include snacks and appetisers, soup and salad, main dishesand desserts. Benjarong Cooking Class offers a very hand-onexperience, and the instruction emphasizes practicality andinventiveness.
