Debs was arrested and convicted under the Espionage Act of 1917 for obstructing the draft due to

this speech. Civil Liberties - the basic rights that are guaranteed to

us by the Bill of Rights like the freedom of speech What do you think? Should Debs have been arrested?Debs was convicted based on the idea that his speech

presented a “clear and present danger” to the country as viewed by the Supreme Court.

The fear that Germans might interfere with the war effort in being loyal to Germany, the government took these measures to prevent dissent against the war and ensure the citizens’ support.
