Since the restoration is several weeks ahead of schedule, NAC Construction stopped work on the UVR restoration in order to complete another project they had started prior to the start of the UVR restoration. They will return to the restoration project June 15. The break has given OPCNM staff time to map and culturally survey new routes in Zones A, G and H before NAC begins work again the week of June 15. NPS coordinated with Border Patrol to identify additional UVRs to be restored. Zone H is a new zone added to bridge the gap between Zones A, B and C. The four zones cover Sonoran pronghorn habitat. Restoring additional routes in Zone H reduces further the fragmentation of pronghorn habitat. The Saguaro Trail Crew added two days to their normal tour of duty to complete the vertical and horizontal mulching on routes in Zones D, E, and F. This was the crew’s last tour working on the restoration project as they are needed on projects at Saguaro National Park, North Cascades National Park and Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The Saguaro Trail Crew has been an invaluable asset to the project and has been instrumental in moving the project towards completion. OPCNM staff thanks all the trail crew members who have participated on the project and for the quality of work they provided. OPCNM staff had the opportunity to work with Saguaro during their final tour and will continue the work of vertical and horizontal mulching, transplanting of nursery grown plants and seeding routes. Upcoming Map, classify and complete cultural surveys on any new routes to be restored along Pozo Nuevo Road in Zone A, and along the northwest boundary of the park in Zone H. Resume UVR restoration in Zone F, Monday, June 15, 2015.
