Program Notes
Simon Gray is a highly successful playwright in England who studied English at Cambridge in his younger years, and subsequently set the location of Quartermaine 's Terms in that very university town. Gray has written a number of bright, incisive plays dealing with the human condition , among them, Butley and Otherwise Engaged, both highly praised, award winners, and very successful on Broadway as well as the West End. Quartermaine's Terms won 8 Obie Awards for the 1983 season in New York, and has been staged since in many of the professional regional theatres in this country. Its mixture of rictus comedy and almost-tragic illumination of the ultimatE loneliness of the human soul has touched audiences since its first performance in London in 1981 . This production at Kennedy Theatre marks its premiere in Hawaii .
