Founded in 2007, Lucifer Chocolate has already become one of the most highly regarded premium chocolate-makers in Slovenia, which is was no small feat in a country that is practically addicted the stuff. Offering a dizzying variety of hand- made pralines, chocolate bars and other candies, the company is perhaps best known for producing limited edition specialty chocolates in exquisitely unique packaging - our favourites including honey chocolate in a box textured to resemble wooden bee-hive panels, chocolate cigars filled with cognac and the Kamasutra gift packs, which are truly works of art. In addition to the cute little chocolate shop-cum-café in the centre of Velenje, Lucifer’s chocolate can be found at many retail outlets around Slovenia, including more than a dozen locations in Ljubljana. QOpen 09:00 - 20:00. Closed Sun. Farmers Market Velenje may be the youngest (and most modern) town in all of Slovenia, but it’s also still very connected to the countryside of the fertile Dravinja Valley. This fact is no more apparent than on the first Saturday of each month, when the local farmers sell their goods at stands set up on the small square outside the Nova Shopping Centre. However, the best time to visit is from April till October, when the event features an additional entertainment programme with live music and other performances, as well as a greatly expanded offering of locally-produced goods, agricultural products and handicrafts. Home & Garden Mömax D-4, Celjska 4, tel. +386 (0)3 42 71 211, [email protected], www. moemax.si. With a large selection of designer furniture and home goods at reasonable prices, it’s easy to see why this place is often referred by locals as the Slovenian IKEA. Although it’s technically an Austrian firm and its trademark hot pink and bright green colours seem a bit tacky compared with IKEA’s blue and yellow, the comparison is definitely a valid one. Velenje’s Mömax is the first to open in the country, but will likely not be the last. PUP Garden Centre B-2, Koroška 40a, tel. +386 (0)3 896 87 00, info@ pup.si, www.pup.si. July Jump over the hide First of all, a reveille rouses folk to the miner’s day celebrations, to see the parade and later the young miners’ symbolic leap into a coal-black slate. August “Starotrški dan v Šaleku” The old borough market day is not a thing of the past in Velenje, at least in its old form, but is revived every year, calling all from the Šalek valley to Šalek square (Trg v Šaleku) in Velenje for a day of artisans and craftsmen hawking their wares. Family weekend at Tuševo Tourist Farm Organised by the local tourist board of Vinska Gora, this is a weekend of family fun at the wonderfully rural farmhouse of a young family of five, not far from Velenje. A must if you’ve never been to a tourist farm. September Sunday at the Mill In its sixth year already, the sunday festival at a traditional mill offers visitors a rich cultural program of stalls with farm produce, music, dancing, and a warming of the soul, not to mention the spirits. The institute‘s func- tion is essentially to ensure that legislative demands are met, by providing the abovementioned services and collaborating with people and businesses around Slovenia and in throughout southeastern Europe, where some challenging projects have been implemented in the last few years. Events Pippi Longstocking Festival The largest children’s event in Slovenia, Velenje’s annual Pikin Festival involves that famous nine-year old girl (Pika Nogavička in Slovene) and her little freckly nose, distinct ginger hair and pig tails - but this time she has been cloned many times over, and runs around inviting kids to have fun and get involved in creative and educational activities, workshops, performances and movies. They have a whale of a time, painting, making, watching in awe at the Pippi stage show, ogling weird and wonderful creatures (in fancy dress), playing accord- ian, and all wearing odd socks! An interesting, lively and boundlessly fun event for children, it is named after the popular books, films and television series’ of Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren. Medieval Day at Velenje Castle Above its town (to the West) is the castle of Velenje, site of grand battles, with sword and also, according to legend, atop mighty four legged beasts. Adventure Race Crazy sport heads would be the only way to describe those who would sign up for this challenge, starting at the Slovenian coastal town of Piran and traversing half of the country by numerous sporting means such as kayak, mountain bike, rollerblade and skike, not to mention just plain swimming (in the sea and rivers), trekking, caving and abseiling! International Athletics Meeting In honour of Miner’s Day in Velenje, the city’s athletics club runs an annual meet in which competitors from all over the world take part in a programme featuring the usual 100-800m races, plus 3000/5000m, pole vault, hammer, javelin, long/triple jump and relay. However, perhaps of most interest for short-term visitors and tourists, are the glorious spa facilities boasting a full range of state-of-the-art saunas, pools, showers, soft lighting and relaxation areas. More information about all services can be found on their website, as well as a full list of prices, which are significantly lower than those found at larger wellness resorts in Slovenia. Gorenje is globally one of the mar- ket leaders for high-end refrigerators, washing machines, cookers and dishwashers. The secret to their success, exporting products to some seventy countries across the world lies at least partly in their ethic, innovation, design and simplicity. Their product lines employ several leading designers, putting the company whose name comes from the tiny Slovene village where it was originally set up in 1950, firmly on the world map. Now including a long list of brands, the headquarters is located in Velenje itself and employs 6000. Its in- novative products (for which it has won a lot of awards) include the refrigerator with HomeChef over with a large TFT display, induction hob IQCook with sensor control and anti-allergy tumble dryer.

The event is held at the city stadium.

Galactica Sport & Wellness Centre B-2, Koroška 56, tel. +386 (0)5 90 78 478, [email protected], www.galactica.si. Galactica is a modern temple of fitness and relaxation, which offers facilities and services surpassing those found almost anywhere elsewhere in Slovenia. In addition to the already famous Space Bar (see Nightlife), the premises includes a large fitness centre staffed with experienced personal trainers, rooms for exercise, dance, yoga and other regularly scheduled group activities, a massage studio offering Thai and other massages, and a beauty salon where you can be pampered with a number of treatments. Q Open Mon-Fri 08:00-22:00, Sat 09:00-22:00 and Sun 15:00-22:00.

Slovenia may be tiny in terms of square kilome-ters, but the industrious country can boast various successes on the world business stage. Gorenje is globally one of the mar-ket leaders for high-end refrigerators, washing machines, cookers and dishwashers. The secret to their success, exporting products to some seventy

countries across the world lies at least partly in their ethic, innovation, design and simplicity. Their product lines employ several leading designers, putting the company whose name comes from the tiny Slovene village where it was originally set up in 1950, firmly on the world map. Now including a long list of brands, the headquarters is located in Velenje itself and employs 6000. Its in-novative products (for which it has won a lot of awards) include the refrigerator with HomeChef over with a large TFT display, induction hob IQCook with sensor control and anti-allergy tumble dryer. A tribute to Velenje, and no doubt the pride of many in the Šalek valley.

HotelsPaka C-4, Rudarska 1, tel. +386 (0)3 898 07 00, fax +386 (0)3 898 08 10, [email protected], www.hotelpaka.com. Located in the very heart of the city, within only a few minutes’ walk or less of the main square, Mercator Centre and the tourist office, Hotel Paka is the only proper hotel in or around Velenje, and is a fine one at that, boasting four-star facilities, a great restaurant and excellent service. Originally built along with the rest of modern Velenje in 1959, the building itself is actually a protected historical monument, as it was designed by the famed Slovene architect Rorhman, the only representative of the Functionalist school in the country. The hotel long-served as the centre of social life in Velenje and the accommodation of choice for important visitors from throughout Yugoslavia. Q 42 rooms, 10 apartments (singles €79, doubles €99).

Vila Heberstein D-4, Kopališka 1, tel. +386 (0)3 896 1400, fax +386 (0)3 896 1414, [email protected], vilaherberstein.si. Slovenia is full of castles and mansions, but there are not many places in the country (or elsewhere for that matter) where guests can truly experience living like Hapsburg nobility for such reasonable prices. The beautifully restored 19th century mansion is situated on forested hill just above Velenje’s city centre, with seven huge rooms, all of which boast incredibly high ceilings and are decorated with original antique furniture - with some of the latter concealing modern amenities, such as cabinets with LCD televisions and wooden stands with mini-refrigerators. The grounds feature a lovely garden that is one of the most popular spots around for weddings, while the woods are crisscrossed with hiking trails. Q 7 rooms (singles €70, doubles €90).

Razgoršek B-4, Stari Trg 33, tel. +386 (0)3 898 36 30, fax +386 (0)3 898 36 72, [email protected], www.hotelrazgorsek.si. Sitting quite literally in the shadow of the castle, the modern building was designed to evoke the late-19th century, and rooms are likewise furnished in an ornate faux Baroque style to complete the concept of accommodation fit for aristocrats. Q (singles €50-60, doubles €70-78, suites €108-150).

HostelsMC Velenje D-3, Efenkova 61a, tel. +386 (0)5 923 4600/+386 (0)41 859 692, [email protected], www. mc- velenje. si. One of a network of newly built or renovated hostels-cum-youth centres that have opened around Slovenia over the past few years, MC Velenje is a first-rate budget accommodation option near Šalek Castle in the east end of the city. Beds are in huge 6/3-person dorms and doubles, some of which even have private bathrooms, and the rooms are located in separate wings of the building, which can be rented out in their entirety for more privacy. Common spaces include a large kitchen and dining area, a courtyard for smokers, and multi-purpose rooms for meetings, events, workshops and the like. Of course the premises are also home to the city’s youth centre, as the MC in the name stands for Mladinski (or Youth) Center. Q 58 beds.

GuesthousesTuristična Kmetija Tuševo Lopatnik 11, tel./fax +386 (0)3 587 06 43. For those who are coming to Velenje to just get away from it all, there’s no more relaxing place to stay than the Tuševo family farm. The modern farmhouse is situ-ated on a 10 hectare estate comprised of forests and farmland a few kilometres to the east of town, and there are a total of five guest rooms that can accommodate up to 15 people.

Prenočišča Mraz Lipa 54, Velenje Gorica, tel. +386 (0)3 898 31 00, fax +386 (0)3 898 31 33, [email protected], www.prenocisca-mraz.com. The Mraz family’s guesthouse offers comfortable accommodation at the edge of the village of Velenje Gorica just southeast of Velenje proper. Surrounded by forests and fields, the place has a quiet relaxing atmosphere, yet is only about 1.5km from city centre, which can be reached with a free local shuttle bus or a pleasant 15-minute walk.

CampsAvtokamp Jezero Cesta Simona Blatnika 27, tel. +386 (0)3 586 27 76/+386 (0)70 814 301, [email protected]. The most popular place to stay in Velenje during the summer months is undoubtedly the large campground about a kilometre to the west of town on the shores of Lake Velenje. The whole area is a hive of outdoor activities, with wind surfing, sail boats and catamarans all available for rent. The camp additionally boasts a fitness centre, beach volleyball court, a large covered children’s playground and tennis facilities.

SlovenianTuristična Kmetija Tuševo Lopatnik 11, tel. +386 (0)3 587 06 43/+386 (0)41 600 651. In Slovenia there’s no better place for visitors to try traditional cuisine or experience authentic rural life than at a tourist farm, and while the area around Velenje has but only one of these farms, Tuševo is a fine option for lunch or an early dinner. Q Open by reservation only

Gostilna Verdelj D-3, Šalek 14, tel. +386 (0)3 58 58 280/+386 (0)41 776 221. This family-run restaurant in the shadow of Šalek castle is about as traditional as they come, and has all the atmosphere of a countryside farmhouse. It’s the kind of place where a menu is only produced if asked for, but with several daily specials available there’s often no need.

InternationalHotel Paka Restaurant C-4, Rudarska 1, tel. +386 (0)3 898 07 00, [email protected], www.hotelpaka.com. As would be expected from the restaurant located on the ground floor of the only 4-star hotel in the area, the service here is excellent, the food superbly prepared and the ambiance elegant and understated. The menu consisted of international standards and Slovene specialities, and the friendly servers seem happy to make recommendations if you can’t decide what to order. Don’t pass up dessert, which can also be taken in the adjacent café or out on the terrace.

Jezero A-2, Simona Blatnika 24, tel. +386 (0)3 586 64 62, www.gost.si. Located to the east of town near the shores of Lake Velenje (jezero is Slovene for lake), the restaurant is one of the most frequently recommended stops for visitors, and is also a popular setting for weddings, business lunches and other gatherings. The seasonal set-menus are a good value, but if you have to try one dish only, make it the so-called Miner’s Lunch - a feast of grilled meats bathed in a tasty house sauce and accompanied by fried potatoes (which we have to admit we were unable to finish). If the weather is cooperating, and after-meal walk along the lake it always a good idea. QOpen 09:00 - 23:00.

Vila Herberstein D-4, Kopališka 1, tel. +386 (0)3 896 1400, [email protected], vilaherberstein.si. Located on a hill just above Velenje’s city centre, the immaculate Vila Herberstein is nevertheless in a space and time completely separated from the town only a few hundred metres below. Dating back to the second half of the 19th century, the previous owners included several noble families - including the mysterious Maria Anne Herberstein from whom it now takes its name - and the villa was restored to its former glory by its current owner Gorenje following Slovenian independence. The separate dining rooms provide an unsurpassed atmosphere, transporting guests back in time, while the food and service are every bit as fitting. It’s well-worth stopping by here on any visit to Velenje, even if it’s just for a cup of coffee (and perhaps a quick tour of the premises and grounds). QOpen 12:00 - 22:00. Closed Sun.

Vila Široko Metleče 6, Šoštanj, tel. +386 (0)3 58 81 030, www.gost.si. One of the most exquisitely preserved suburban residences of its kind in the region, this early 20th century villa is also home to one of the area’s best restaurants. Hidden away in the forested hills above Šoštanj, the estate was originally owned by the Woschnagg family, who controlled the once lucrative leather industry. Covered in ivy and other plants and boasting a collection of statues, the villa’s courtyard is a often visited by local art students who come here to practice painting idyllic scenery. Of course the cuisine is exceptional and is accompanied by a fine selection of wine from the cellar downstairs (which can only be reached via a secret passageway). There are also a few rooms upstairs that can be hired individually or as one large apartment. QOpen 11:00 - 23:00. Closed Mon.

Delavski Club C-3, Titov trg 3, tel. +386 (0)3 897 11 08, [email protected], www.gorenjegostinstvo.eu. The so-called Workers’ Club was once one of the social centres of town, not only during packed lunchtime rushes, but also for jovial gatherings after long work days. Nowadays the newly renovated cafeteria-style restaurant still caters to local workers, but is also popular with students and tourists.QOpen 08:00 - 20:00. Closed Sun.

Gostilnica Pri Knapu C-4, Šaleška 1, tel. +386 (0)3 290 99 39/+386 (0)31 388 002, www.gost.si. If you need to take a break from shopping in the futuristic Mercator Centre to rest your weary legs and fill your stomach, Pri Knapu is there for you seven days a week. QOpen 08:00 - 20:00, Sun 08:00 - 15:00.

Kolodvorska B-3, Cesti Talcev 37a, tel. +386 (0)3 898 72 31/+386 (0)41 587 924, www.presta.si. With huge portions, low prices and prompt service (the lunch specials are served almost immediately), Kolodvorska is a popular lunchtime destination for workers and other locals from the immediate vicinity.

Pivnica Zoro C-3, Šaleška 21, tel. +386 (0)41 601 741, [email protected], www.pivnica-zoro.si. Tucked away on the basement level of the modern Novo Shopping Centre, once you’ve passed through the doors of this pivnica you’ll find yourself surrounded by wood furnishing, soft lighting and the murmur of other patrons. The only shortcoming here is the fact that the place closes so early!QOpen 08:30 - 20:00, Sat 09:00 - 14:00. Closed Sun.

FishRibiški Dom B-1, Cesta na Jezero 7b, tel. +386 (0)3 586 66 00, www.rd-velenje.si. If there’s a more relaxing place in Velenje to enjoy a beer or a simple lunch, we have yet to find it. Surrounded by trees on the shore of Lake Škale, this venerable old house is both the home of the town’s fishing association and a cosy restaurant where you can watch the local fishermen in action from the terrace.QOpen 06:00 - 22:00.

BalkanGostilna Sonce B-4, Stari Trg 28, tel. +386 (0)3 897 04 02. Despite Velenje’s cultural and demographic ties to the former Yugoslav states, Gostilna Sonce is somewhat surprisingly one of the only Balkan restaurants around. Q Open Mon-Thur 07:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 07:00-24:00, Sun 10:00-20:00.

PizzaPizerija Velun D-3, Šalek 24a, tel. +386 (0)80 21 55, www.velun.si. Another popular place to eat in the quaint little neighbourhood of Šalek, the huge woodfired oven here turns out some great fork-and-knife-ready pizzas, with Carlsberg beer on draught to wash them down with.

Bars & PubsSpace Bar B-2, Koroška 56, tel. +386 (0)5 907 84 78, [email protected], www.spacebar.si. Most likely the trendiest place to spend you nights in Velenje, on any given day of the week you can find Space Bar’s modern and slightly futuristic interior filled with the town’s most well-to-do partiers. They frequently host concerts and live DJs, various dance parties, standup comedians and many other events. The large uniquely designed terrace is also a great spot to enjoy a coffee on your way to or from nearby Škale Lake, or relax with a fruit smoothie after a session in the Galactica fitness centre, which is in the same building. Q Open Sun-Thur 08:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 08:00-03:00.

Markiz C-3/4, Rudarska 6, tel. +386 (0)41 663 555. This small coffee bar opposite Hotel Paka doesn’t exactly stand out from its surroundings, but the interior is surprisingly homey and seems older than the modern building its housed in - with worn leather booths, soft lighting and lots of wooden accents.

Mastadont Bar Cesta Simona Blatnika 27, tel. +386 (0)3 586 27 76, [email protected]. Located at the entrance to the Jezero campground and surrounded by various sports facilities as well as being just a few steps from the lake, Mastadont Bar is a popular place to drop by for a drink before, during or after participating in some kind of physical activity. However, even for those who are simply out for an afternoon stroll, it’s a nice place to relax and enjoy the scenic setting away from the city centre.

Osmica B-2, Koroška 44, tel. +386 (0)3 586 41 01/+386 (0)51 240 404. The perfect place for kids or the young at heart, Osmica is a mini fun centre that features three ‘virtual bowling’ lanes, a full arcade with tons of pinball machines, a few arcade games, an air hockey table and a couple of billiards tables.

ClubsEmce Plac C-4, Saleška 3, tel. +386 (0)41 496 120, [email protected], www.emceplac.si. The centre of Velenje’s alternative scene, and the most popular place for young people to hang out at the weekends, Emce Plac is the result of cooperation between the three largest youth organisations in the city and is a cultural centre in its own right. Part bar/café, part art gallery and part concert venue, there’s always something going on inside, and despite the cheap beer on tap, on all but the coldest nights there’s often an even larger crowd gathered outside drinking their own store-bought booze. A updated programme of upcoming events and concerts can be found on their website.

Max Klub C-4, Saleška 3, tel. +386 (0)3 586 25 81. Opened all the way back in 1991, Max Klub is as old as Slovenia itself and is easily the longest running club in the region (and also one of the oldest in the entire country). After more than two decades in existence it’s only gotten better with age, and still attracts a young crowd of revellers, many of whom come from all over to the area to see performances from major Slovene and international bands - mainly in the rock and pop genres. Jazz music is also important part of the club’s focus, with concerts and full festivals taking place from time to time. It’s located on the western side of Rdeča Dvorana (Red Hall) sports complex in the city centre. Q Open Mon-Thur 18:00-01:00, Fri-Sat 20:00-05:00. Closed Sun.

Kavarna Lucifer C-3, Šaleška 19a, tel. +386 (0)3 588 30 80, [email protected], www.lucifer-chocolate.si. Not only does Lucifer produce some of the best chocolate in Slovenia, they also operate perhaps the most popular café in Velenje. Take one step inside and it’s not difficult to see why: warm colours, soft lighting and comfortable seating makes it an easy place to pass the time chatting with good company, and this is before even mentioning the excellent gourmet coffee and delectable cakes and other desserts. Of course one-third of the space also serves as a chocolate shop, where you can peruse the handmade sweets and special limited edition offerings that make great gifts and/or souvenirs. Q Open Mon-Thur 07:00-21:00, Fri-Sat 07:00-22:00. Closed Sun.

Kavarna Nova C-3, Šaleška 21, tel. +386 (0)3 897 02 72/+386 (0)41 759 419. Taking its name from the shopping centre it calls home, Nova tries to be all things to all people, and more or less succeeds in this objective. As a café they offer coffee, warm drinks, sweets and sandwiches, with free WiFi, a selection of newspapers and magazines and even a children’s play area for the little ones. As a bar they have cocktails, drink specials and DJs at night. However, our favourite single aspect is the terrace upstairs that is heated in the winter and lined with plants and small trees, and also has sun chairs for the warmer months. Q Open Mon- Thur 07:00-22:00, Fri 07:00-00:00, Sat 08:00-00:00, Sun 09:00-21:00. PTJABW

Kavarna Paka C-4, Rudarska 1, tel. +386 (0)3 898 07 23, [email protected], www.hotelpaka.si. The café on the ground floor of Hotel Paka offers some of the best people watching in town, especially from the covered terrace out front. Long-serving as one of the most popular cafés in Velenje, it’s central location makes it a common meeting point for locals, and there’s a wide selection of ice cream and cakes to go with your coffee, as well as several breakfast options. For those with a late night sweet tooth, stop by between 22:00-23:00 and get half-priced cakes before closing.

Bianca Gurmanka C-4, Stari Trg 3, tel. +386 (0)41 759 419, [email protected]. This cosy little café can be found on the ground floor of Vila Bianca, through the doors opposite the tourist information centre, where tourists and locals alike enjoy their morning coffees or something stronger in the evenings in an atmospheric space with low arched ceilings and exposed brick walls. There’s a seating area outside the back entrance, and an much larger terrace located up the stairs nearby, which doubles as a open-air gallery lined with sculptures and other artworks. Light snacks and other homemade goodies are also available. Q Open Mon-Thur 08:00-22:00, Fri-Sat 08:00-01:00, Sun 09:00-18:00.

Cafés

Picadilly B-4, Stari Trg 35, tel. +386 (0)3 586 93 58, www.pizzeria-picadilly.com. Despite the fact that the words ‘pizza’ and ‘steak’ are officially part of this establishment’s name, the menu also boasts a selection of soups, salads, pastas, grilled dishes and other specialities.

Fast FoodMladost C-3, Prešernov Cesta 10, tel. +386 (0)3 89 74 260/+386 (0)3 89 742 61, [email protected]. Mladost is the go-to destination in town for those seeking burek, burgers, kebaps and other hot greasy food. The new premises evoke the feelings of classic 1950s American diner, and despite being ‘fast food’ we always find it well worth sitting down to properly enjoy our meal.

Ohrid Ice Cream C-4, Rudarska 2. Widely regarded by locals as the best ice cream in the region if not all of Slovenia, Ohrid has long been a mandatory stop for those passing through Velenje and a not-so-guilty pleasure for those who live here.

AsianPekinško Mesto B-4, Partizanska 1, tel. +386 (0)3 586 43 10, www.kitajska-restavracija.si. One of four Chinese restaurants in the country run by the Ji family from Shanghai, who opened their first restaurant back in 1997, Pekinško Mesto is just about your only option for non-Western food in these parts - and a fine option it is.QOpen 11:00 - 23:00.

Essential SightsTito Square C-3, Envisioned as the grand centrepiece of modern Velenje, Tito Square was officially opened on 30 September 1959. Its historical importance is not derived solely from its name or the fact that it boasts the world’s largest Tito statue, but it was also the site of several key meetings during the socialist era, counting Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev among its many visitors, as well as the infamous Nicolae Ceausescu and other top-ranking figures from the Soviet Bloc. Today the square is still the geographic and cultural heart of the city, and the host of numerous open-air events.

Velenje Castle & Museum Velenje Castle & Museum C-4, tel. +386 (0)3 898 26 30, [email protected], www.muzej-velenje.si. One of the fin-est castles in all of Slovenia, for much of its history the town of Velenje consisted of little more than the this medieval hilltop residence and a handful of buildings at its base. While everything changed in the 1950s with the construction of a modern town covering much of the valley below, the castle has maintained a watchful eye over the development, and is still the single most recognisable sight in Velenje.Originally constructed in the 13th century, the castle’s appearance today largely dates from several centuries later, and in recent years it has been completely renovated and restored to its former glory. As visually stunning and architecturally interesting as the building itself is, the real attraction here is the diverse collection of the Velenje Museum that is housed within. In addition to an extensive collection covering the history of the Šaleška valley, there’s a permanent exhibition of both Baroque and contemporary art, as well as a detailed presentation of the origins of the modern city. However, perhaps the most unique feature is the largest collection of African art in Slovenia - and the true story of how it found its way here is almost as interesting as the collection itself. Guided tours are optional, but extremely fascinating and highly recommendable, especially at the end when you find yourself in a late-19th century beerhouse!

The Lakes A/B-1, The three lakes situated to the northwest of the city centre are one of the signature features of Velenje, and become absolutely abuzz with activity during the warmer months of the year. The smallest of the three, Lake Škale, is just beyond the city stadium and various other sports centres, and can be easily circumnavigated along a well-kept pathway that passes an excellent fish restaurant, a horse ranch and countless fisherman. The much larger Lake Velenje has paths along its southern and eastern shores, and is also home to a

large public sports complex, a water sports centre and campground, as well as one slightly surreal floating art installation. To the west, Lake Šoštanj is closed to the public due to its proximity to the mine and power plant. In fact, unbeknownst to most foreign visitors all of the lakes are actually artificial, created decades ago when the land sunk into the mining pits and was flooded.

Old Velenje B/C-4, Stari Trg. Thanks to the massive feat of urban planning and engineering that was undertaken here in the 1950s, Velenje is often referred to as the ‘youngest town’ in Slovenia. However, Velenje actually dates back to at least the mid-13th century, when it was first mentioned in the historical records. Nowadays, much of what constituted this small market town can still be seen along the streets to the west of Villa Bianca, and winding up the road to the castle past the parish Church of St Mary.

The House of Minerals B-4, Stari Trg 19, tel. +386 (0)3 898 26 30, [email protected], www.muzej-velenje.si/hisamineralov. A former miner from Velenje was so passionate about his field of work that he amassed a collection of minerals from around the world numbering 912, with more than 2700 exhibits. Jože Rihtar had started at an even younger age, while still a school boy, and went on to acquire such examples as the Japanese rainbow carbuncle and extraordinary pieces from nearby (amber from Velenje, quartz crystal from Hrastnik near Škofja Loka). Located in the old town, closed Mondays.

Velenje’s Countryside Velenje may be the most modern of Slovenian cities, but it still possesses the spirit of a rural countryside market town. Likewise, the rolling green hills that surround Velenje offer visitors many opportunities for hiking, cycling and generally enjoying nature. The villages of Vinska Gora, Škale and Šentilj are all excellent destinations for a weekend stroll, and are within easy walking distance of the city centre. Enquire at the main tourist office in Villa Bianca for more info on possible routes and specific sights.

Šalek Castle D-3, The giant stone tower perched on a hill to the east of the city centre, is the ruined remains of Šalek Castle, the oldest castle in the Šaleška valley. Abandoned in the late 18th century, the tower is nevertheless one of the most impressive sights in Velenje, boasting a unique triangular layout that is the only of its kind in Slovenia. The lookout also affords spectacular views of the city, and is free to enter - although you’ll need to enquire at the tourist info centre to get the key to the outer gate.

MonumentsTito Statue C-3, Titov Trg. While Velenje officially shed its formal name Titovo Velenje (or Tito’s Velenje) in 1990, the city’s main square Titov Trg still boasts the world’s largest statue of the man who for many symbolises the idealised glory of

the former Yugoslav state: Josip Broz Tito. Standing some 10m high, the statue captures the long-time ruler in a somewhat solemn and reflective pose, donning his signature military garb with his hands clasped behind his back. It was unveiled on 24 June 1977 to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Communist League, and remains one of Velenje’s most famous attractions.

Monument to Nestl Žgank C-3/4, Titov Trg. Both literally and figuratively in the shadow of the more famous Tito Statue a few dozen metres away, this intricately crafted monument honours the man who played a key role in the found-ing of modern Velenje, and oversaw the city’s prosperity during its first decades. The long-time director of the Velenje coal mine, Žgank went on to serve as the president of the Velenje Assembly for much of the 1970s. The monument is a relatively new addition to the square, only dedicated in 2009 to mark the 100th anniversary of Žgank’s birth.

Museums Around VelenjeGril Homestead Lipje pri Velenju, tel. +386 (0)3 898 26 30, www.muzej-velenje.si. Nowadays Velenje may not be synonymous with wine or wine-growing, but in the past the sunny south-facing hills to the east of town were covered in vineyards. This is where you can find the Gril Homestead - a 19th century farmhouse that now serves as an ethnological museum. In addition to the main building, the site includes a barn, vineyard, beehives, herb garden, orchard and pastures. Guided tours take about an hour, and can be arranged through the Velenje Museum, which also sells various organic products that are still produced on the farm. Q Open 10:00-17:00 from 1 May to 30 September, and by prior arrangement for groups.

Kavčnik Homestead One of the many treasures of antiquated rural architecture still standing in Slovenia, this several hundred year old wooden farmhouse has the southernmost example of a smokehouse (dimnica/kuhna). These were used, prior to the more modern black kitchens (črne kuhinje) commonly found in Slovenia, to smoke meat. A precious example of cultural heritage, it has been rightly preserved since it ceased to be occupied in the 1980s.

A combination of Renaissance and neo-Gothic styles, the sprawling mansion underwent extensive renovations in recent years, which both preserved the integrity of the building’s cultural heritage and dramatically modernised the interior space, which in addition of the TIC office also includes an art gallery, gift shop, several formal events spaces and a cosy bar/café. Q Open 07:00-19:00 Mon-Fri, 09:00-17:00 Sat-Sun and holidays.

Local Tourism Associations In addition to the activities of the central tourism office located in Villa Bianca, there are many other smaller tourist associations and clubs in and around the city that operate under the auspices of the Tourist Association of Velenje. Tourist Information

Velenje is situated in the north of Slovenia some 85km from the capital Lju-bljana, while the country’s second and third largest cities, Maribor and Celje, are only 75km and 25km away respectively, while Graz in Austria is around 130km. Velenje is well-connected by train and bus to these and other destina-tions, and is also easy to reach by car. The nearest airport is Ljubljana Brnik, with those in Graz, Klagenfurt and Zagreb also relatively nearby.

By TrainThere are up to 15 trains per day to Ljubljana and Maribor during the week, all of which require a transfer in Celje, and take between 2-3.5hrs to the former and slightly less to the latter. Fares are between €8-13 one-way, and depend on the speed and class of the train. Be aware that at the weekends there are only four trains on Saturday and none on Sunday. Velenje’s train station is located just west of the city centre. For more info see the official Slovenian Railways site at www.slo-zeleznice.si.

By BusVelenje’s large modern bus stations can be found in the on Saleške cesta, just east of the Mercator Centre. There are frequent local and regional buses during the week, with up to five direct buses on weekdays to Ljubljana (departing in the morning and returning in the afternoon/evening) and up to 22 per to Celje. Most buses to Ljubljana take just over an hour. Services operate at the weekends, but are much scarcer. Timetables and fares can be found at www.ap-ljubljana.si, but it’s always best to double check these in person at the station.

By CarCar is not only the fastest and most convenient way to reach Velenje, but it also affords visitors the opportunity to explore the countryside and more remote sites. The drive from Ljubljana takes about one hour, follow the A1 motorway east towards Maribor and exit at Žalec/Velenje/Slovenj Gradec. From here Velenje is another 20km or so north on route 4, which enters the city from the south at the main traffic roundabout.

Getting AroundVelenje’s city centre is relatively easily covered on foot, but to visit more distant locations, such as the Coal Mining Museum, Vila Široko or neighbour-ing villages, a car makes things much easier. However, the best way to get around Velenje and its surroundings, at least on warm and/or sunny days, is by bike. These can be rented from the tourist office in Villa Bianca if you don’t have your own.

Arrival & Transport

B-2, Stari Jašek / Koroška Cesta, tel. +386 (0)3 5870 997, [email protected], muzej.rlv.si. It’s no exaggeration to say that modern Velenje in large part owes its existence to its coal mine, which has been continually operating since the 19th century and still produces some four million tons of coal annually - which is used at the nearby Šoštanj power plant to produce roughly 1/3 of Slovenia’s energy needs. The mine is inherently intertwined with many aspects of the city’s history, culture and economy, making the mining museum a must-see on any visit to Velenje. With the aim of bringing the long and storied history of Slove-nian coal mining to a wider public audience, the comprehensive tour includes a multimedia presentation, followed by a trip 160m below the earth’s surface for a hands-on demonstration of what it’s like to work in the mine. Afterwards take a ride on an underground railway back above ground, and finally take a look at an intriguing historical and ethnological exhibition, as well as a unique space for temporary fine arts exhibitions. Don’t forget to save some time to visit the gift shop, which is stocked with all kinds of interesting items.

The Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia

It’s no exaggeration to say that modern Velenje in large part owes its exis-tence to its coal mine, which has been continually operating since the 19th century and still produces some four million tons of coal annually - which is primarily used at the nearby Šoštanj power plant to supply around 1/3 of Slovenia’s energy needs. Sitting atop one of the world’s thickest seams of coal, which is up to 165m thick, the company has one of the most techno-logically advanced coal mining operations in the world and plans to continue output for another four decades, although it could theoretically continue to operate for even longer without exhausting the known reserves. The coal itself is known as lignite, or soft brown coal, which is a relatively young form of the substance, and as such possesses a much lower energy density than black coal. Its got a high moisture content and distinctive peat-like odour that will be immediately familiar to anyone who has travelled extensively in Scotland or Ireland. As one of the largest employers in the region, with a current workforce of some 2600, the Velenje mine and it subsidiaries take their social and environmental responsibilities very seriously. In addition rehabilitating the city’s lakes, the company is actively involved in the promotion of sports and education, both amongst its employees and the community as a whole. Velenje is also home to the only mining school in all of Slovenia, and the graduation ceremony for newly minted miners is one of the most important events on the calendar, taking place at the city stadium on the 3rd of July every year. Despite the bright and still relatively long future that Velenje’s mine has in front of it, the company has already diversified its business into many different areas, including tourism, catering and hospitality.

Velenje Coal Mine The Leather Museum Primorska 6h, Šoštanj, tel. +386 (0)3 898 44 20, www.muzej-usnjarstva.si. Some 210 years of leather production were seen in the town of Šoštanj, from the period of the industrialisation and finally ceasing at the end of the 20th Century. Fittingly, a museum to present this ‘industry’ was set up, in 2009, and makes use of the old factory bathroom to showcase the story, most important machines, and local life through the age. Group tours and school visits are possible. There’s a cafe and shop, and the museum is closed on Mondays. Tickets including a visit to the Velenje city museum (under whose banner this museum is run) can also be bought.

Built in 1971 by architect Adi Miklavc, the gallery’s unmistakably modernist design definitely makes an immediate visual impact on visitors before they even enter the building. Inside there is a large col-lection of 20th century Slovene artists, most of whom are locals from either the Šaleška or Savinjska valleys. Exhibitions tend to focus on contemporary works from the younger generation of Slovene artists, while the gallery also organises the annual Velenje Artists’ Colony, which is attended by recent graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. QOpen 10:00 - 17:00, Sat 10:00 - 13:00. Closed Mon, Sun.

Velenje is a youthful city with a vibrant nightlife, photo by Andrej Lubej

Situated amongst the rolling green hills of the Šalek Valley with the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Pohorje Mountains to the west and east respectively, Velenje is embraced by nature on all sides. However, despite being less than an hour’s drive from Slov-enia’s three largest urban centres (Ljubljana, Maribor and Celje) and being the coun-try’s fifth largest city itself, Velenje is still largely undiscovered by tourists, both domestic and foreign - a fact we hope to change with the publication of this first edition of Velenje In Your Pocket!Velenje and its magnificent castle were first mentioned in the historical record as early as 1264, when it was a small market town and agricultural centre for the countless villages and farms in the surrounding countryside, and it remained as such until the discovery of one of the world’s largest lignite deposits in the second half of the 19th century. The town quickly expanded around the mining industry in the years that followed, while modern Velenje was constructed as a planned city during the 1950s, opening in September of 1959 to great fanfare as an example of Yugoslav initiative and civil engineering. It was even renamed Titovo Velenje (or literally Tito’s Velenje) in 1981 in honour of the late Yugoslav leader, only reverting to its original name upon Slovenia’s independence in 1990. Nowadays, Velenje is a youthful regional capital that is just waiting to be explored on day-trip or a long weekend away. The lignite coal mine still actively accounts for around a third of the country’s energy needs, while the mine itself is home to an intriguing and authentic museum. The white fairytale castle still sits atop a hill just above the town, now housing several unique exhibitions, and several interesting rural museums attest to the fact that Velenje’s agricultural past has not been forgotten. In addition to its mine, the city is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Gorenje, a leading producer of home appliances, and for several large annual events, including the Pippi Longstock-ing Festival, Kunigunda Festival and Medieval Day, all of which are youth oriented and very family-friendly. Additionally, we always think of Velenje as the city of flowers and art, with the former bringing colour to virtually every street and square in the city, and plenty of public art on display everywhere you look. Most attractions and venues in the city are also easily accessible to disabled and elderly visitors. We’d like to thank everyone who made this first edition of Velenje In Your Pocket possible, from the professionals at the tourist office to the friendly locals and every-one else we met during our always enjoyable visits to the city.
