BOREHAM WOOD VS SOUTHEND UNITED 54 ! " $ * www.borehamwoodfootballclub.co.uk
Today we welcome the Directors, Management, players and supporters of Southend United to Meadow Park. We hope they have an enjoyable stay with us and a safe journey home later.
Well, since my last programme notes, where we welcomed a very good Dagenham and Redbridge side to Meadow Park, we then perhaps put in our best performance of the season in front of a great crowd and deservedly beat them 2-0 on the day.
For me it was a day that felt like the club was really moving forward, and showcased why the gaffer Luke Garrard signed midfielder Frankie Raymond from Bromley and Josh Rees from Aldershot, as both showed experience, nous, good delivery from set pieces and after the first 20 minutes, they never stopped probing on the day and were a constant thorn in the Daggers side.
Since then, we’ve gone and beaten our local rivals Barnet 1-0 in the FA Cup, lost for only the second time this season up at Chesterfield 2-1, but then beat Kings Lynn 1-0 away on Tuesday night to presently sit third in the current National League table.
In truth we are a typical Luke Garrard side in that we are organised, difficult to beat, but also very clever and know how to win, although possibly we are not necessarily playing that well. People can call us resolute and drab, but I call us close knit, I call us experienced and I believe we have a team spirit and a camaraderie within the club from top to bottom that is proving to be a little bit special, and more than some teams can handle.
Southend United are a huge club who arrive here as a football club perhaps slightly in decline but, with a new management team in place, they will now be looking to get their season back on track. Their journey this season can best be described as a club in transition but as a football club
THE CHAIRMAN
DANNY HUNTER
they, like many others, should never be at Boreham Wood’s level of football. Why? Simply because for me they are Southend United, and they are a far bigger football club than should play in the league that they now reside in.
I temper that by saying the same also goes for the likes of Wrexham, Chesterfield, Stockport County, Grimsby Town, Notts County, Yeovil Town and also perhaps FC Halifax Town, Torquay United, Dagenham and Redbridge, Barnet and Aldershot Town who have all experienced the bright lights of the English Football League. It’s fair to say, though, as only two go up each season from the National League, most are going to be disappointed come May.
We though are still little Boreham Wood, the team that upsets the pools coupon and are, year on year, National League’s perennial underdogs who normally over-achieve. We annoy the fans of the big ex-Football League clubs as we are not supposed to be at their level in terms of ability, income, gates, club size or, in truth, EFL history…......all that is of course clearly obvious to you all but we are so delighted to still be competing at this level of football.
To be competing with the likes of Southend United, who we first played in the FA Cup first round in 1973, is amazing and to be playing so many huge ex-Football League clubs is also fantastic. To tweak their noses occasionally with the odd win or draw makes all the effort, hard work, and in truth sacrifice, at Meadow Park all the more worthwhile.
Today though we will, just prior to kick off, forget all and any football
rivalries for just a brief moment, to share not only Southend’s grief but a democratic nation’s grief when recognising not only a tragedy, but the pointless slaying of a Parliamentary icon, in the form of Southend MP Sir David Amess. Sir David, as has been well documented, was a friend to so many, including the leader of our Council Morris Bright MBE, and was a true gentleman who transcended the generations.
Today, we ask everyone to take a moment to pay your humble respects to a great man with a minute’s applause to celebrate a man’s goodness, his caring nature and an honest man’s heart. What has become so apparent was his love of community and his caring take on life.
His life was lived in a way that gave not only the people of Southend, and others before them, over 40 years of public service and he was a person who was clearly much loved in both his private and public life.…..so today we must firstly say ‘thank you and God Bless you’ to Sir David Amess, while remembering just what he has achieved, as his ambition is now realised and his beloved Southend will soon become a City.
Finally, whoever you support, let’s
hope for an open attacking game and
may the best team win.
Take care, stay safe.

BOREHAM WOOD VS SOUTHEND UNITED8
Having faced Southend last year in the Emirates FA Cup just 8 days shy of it being a year exactly, we now face our opposition for the first time as an equal.
Last years fixture provided a real entertaining match, one that had it all. It was deserved of having supporters in the ground to enjoy.
We took the lead to go 2-0 up, then got pegged back level. We then went 3-2 up again only to be pegged back to 3-3. That meant we had to go to penalties and for the first time in the tie we were behind, Shaq Coulthirst missing the first penalty but thankfully for us we we’re victorious.
Today I can imagine will be slightly different, especially as both sides have some what of a new look.
Southend especially with a new management in place and a squad that has changed hugely from the side we faced here on November 8th last year.
They have had one fixture since the new regime and that was a tough test vs Dagenham, I can only imagine after a full weeks training and some additions they will be closer to the style and manner Kevin will want them adopting moving forward.
They possess some real talented individuals with the likes of Rhys Murphy, Jack Bridge and Josh Coulson all new recruits at Roots Hall who all have an experience at this level and above and a National League winner in Josh who will I’m sure be a massive catalyst to the upturn in results for the remainder of the season.
For us it’s about what we do and how
we go about our business.
We know what Southend offer and we need to guard against that. We need to play with our intensity and our tempo. Something that I feel has been a real plus for us this season.
We were excellent on Tuesday night, a typical away day performance. It was great for us to bounce back from a loss at Chesterfield. I told the group I wanted us to get back on the horse and that’s exactly what they did.
With us missing Will Evans, Connor Smith and Nathan Ashmore, it was even more of a big win. Dave Stephens proving how important he is for us and him delivering on a performance that looked as though he was ever present all year.
Today will show us how important our squad is especially travelling across the country twice over the weekend and Tuesday, shuffling the pack is going to be important for us to ensure we select the best team available to get the result.
We will obviously miss our skipper Mark Ricketts for this afternoons match, but with the quality we possess centre of the park I have no issues with the personnel going in.
So let’s get right behind the boys and be loud and proud.
I hope you enjoy the game and let’s get three points.
Regards
Good afternoon. Firstly, I would like to welcome Kevin Maher,
his staff and players to the LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park for todays

There are happy events that unite us
all. We look back at how the Euro 2020
tournament brought together a country
tired of COVID and lockdowns as we
cheered on our national team. There
was huge success at the Olympics
and Paralympics too. Massively joyous
occasions where we could come together
as a proud nation.
And then there are the sad events, the
tragic times where we must come together
to support each other during grief and loss.
The callous murder of Southend’s Member
of Parliament, Sir David Amess, on Friday
15th October is one such truly horrific
occasion in this country’s recent past.
Sir David was 69 years old. He had been the
MP for Basildon from 1983 and then from
1997 the MP for Southend. Almost 40 years
of public service. He never sought high
office. His first passion was to serve the
people of his constituency. It didn’t matter
whether they had voted for him or not…
Though many, many thousands did.
He was much cherished in Southend,
by people of all communities. And it is
testament to his reputation that after his
savage and senseless killing at a church hall
in Leigh-on-Sea, that politicians and leaders
of all political parties came out to pay
tribute to this kind and caring man.
I spent a very happy evening with Sir David
and friends at a 40th birthday party on a
Saturday night in Southend in the summer.
It was the weekend but Sir David wanted to
come out and be with people. That’s what
he was like.
Sir David leaves a grieving family, a wife
and five children. He also leaves his beloved
Southend grieving, too.
And just as football brought us all together
earlier this year, this fixture brings Southend
to Borehamwood and we want every fan
at the match and every person who lives in
Southend to know that the people of our
town stand side-by-side with you at this
time of deep sorrow.
Today, let us recall our fallen friend Sir
David Amess with a big smile and a huge
cheer for that is, I am sure, how he would
want to be remembered.

Please respectfully join the

applause ahead of kick-off to
celebrate Sir David's life.
Boreham Wood FC sends its heartfelt
condolences to Sir David's constituents of

MATCH REPORT
DATE 09/10/2021LV BET STADIUM MEADOW PARKVANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE
On a fantastic afternoon at the LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park, in front our highest crowd of the season, second half goals from Jamal Fyfield and Josh Rees made sure of Boreham Wood’s second 2-0 home win of the week in a dominant display from Luke Garrard’s men.
Luke Garrard made two changes to the Wood line up from Tuesday night with Josh Rees and Frankie Raymond coming in for Connor Smith and the injured skipper Mark Ricketts.
Despite Boreham Wood’s domination, it was the Daggers who came out of the blocked quickly by forcing a succession of corners. From one of them, Joey Jones forced a good save from Nathan Ashmore in the Wood goal with a well struck shot from the edge of the area. There was there was an excellent move involving Will Wright and Myles Weston before Weston’s cross was just out of reach of Paul McCallum. On sixteen Boreham Wood had their first chance when Jamal Fyfield headed over the bar following a Josh Rees corner. On the half hour mark, an excellent run from Gus Mafuta, created a chance from Josh Rees but he shot straight at Elliot Justham in the Daggers goal. Soon afterwards, the Daggers, Josh Walker had a goal bound effort block by Jamal Fyfield. On thirty-six minutes, some excellent approach play from Myles Weston and Paul McCallum created an opening for Josh Walker who shot wide for the visitors.
Tyrone Marsh then went straight up the other end and tested the palms of Justham in the Daggers goal. Soon after, Scott Boden picked our Marsh whose deflected shot looked destined for the top corner before Justham somehow clawed it away.
The second half started brightly for the hosts and almost
straight away, Will Evans had a shot cleared off the line.
Then on forty-nine minutes, they took the lead. A Mafuta
shot was deflected into the path of Fyfield who finished
well beyond Elliot Justham. Four minutes later Mafuta had
a long range shot saved by Dagger keeper Justham. On
fifty-nine minutes, Wood doubled their lead when Marsh
picked out Josh Rees who slammed his shot home. Wood
could have extended their lead further five minutes later
when Scott Boden was denied by Justham. The visitors
were struggling to get a foothold in the game and chances
for them were few and far between. Angelo Balanta
headed wide when unmarked on seventy minutes. Former
Wood player Balanta had a couple of other half chances
that came to nothing. Just as fourth official Kirsty Dowle
signals four minutes of added time Will Wright had a good
effort for the visitors, but he was denied by Ashmore.
Deep into added time Adrian Clifton had a deflected shot
hit the crossbar for the home side.
It was a thoroughly impressive performance from Luke
Garrard’s men. They recovered from a shaky start and very
quickly got a foothold in the game. The Boreham Wood
manager has got his team playing with such confidence
that it is hard to find any fault with them. To be second in
the league after eleven games in quite an achievement.
Luke Garrard won’t be getting too excited yet though and
he’ll want to take each game as it comes. It was great to
see the impact that the increased attendance had on the
players today. There is a real buzz among the players and
supporters going into the big FA Cup tie at Barnet next
Saturday.

An FA Cup upset was on the cards as National League side
Boreham Wood knocked out then-League Two strugglers
Southend United on penalties. An end-to-end affair saw
Wood race into a shock 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jamal
Fyfield and a Mark Ricketts wonder strike, but the away
side reacted by scoring twice in quick succession to level
proceedings. Extra time was required to separate the sides

THE GAFFER
KEVIN MAHER
A Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate, Kevin Maher enjoyed a 20-year playing career in which he made a name for himself at Southend United, where he featured more than 300 times. After transitioning into coaching following his retirement, his first managerial role came briefly as head coach of Chelmsford City, before returning to Roots Hall as a youth coach. Maher would leave his position at Southend in 2019 to become Bristol Rovers first team coach before eventually being placed in temporary charge. He came back to Southend once
again this month but as manager, replacing the outgoing Phil Brown.

THE PLAYMAKER
JACK BRIDGE
Born in Southend-on-Sea, Jack Bridge joined his local
team at the age of nine and signed his professional
contract in 2014. After a couple of loan spells away with Soham Town Rangers
and Chelmsford City, he made his first team debut for the Blues at the end of the 2015/16 season, going
on to make a handful of appearances before leaving permanently
for Northampton Town. Spells with Carlisle United,
Concord Rangers and Bromley followed, before
returning to Roots Hallin the summer.
THE DESTROYER
ABUOGOGO
After graduating from the Arsenal academy, Abu Ogogo spent six
years with Dagenham & Redbridge where he made
over 250 appearances and helped them win
promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2010, as well as captaining the club from 2012. Upon leaving the Daggers at the end of his contract in 2015, he joined Shrewsbury Town where he spent
three seasons, before a brief stint at Coventry City that preceded a
move to Bristol Rovers, A return to Dagenham
& Redbridge for a short-lived loan allowed him
more opportunities, before agreeing to join recently
relegated Southend United.
THE FINISHER
RHYS MURPHY
Beginning his career with
Arsenal, Rhys Murphy
would experience spells
on loan at Brentford and
Preston North End before
leaving the Gunners for
Dutch outfit Telstar, where
he spent a season. He
returned to England with
Dagenham & Redbridge
and signed for Oldham
Athletic after two seasons
with the Daggers,
shortly going on loan to
Crawley Town where he
scored nine goals in 15
appearances and then
AFC Wimbledon where
he won promotion to
League One. A brief stint
with Forest Green Rovers
brought loan spells with

further stints at Gillingham,
Chelmsford City and
Yeovil Town, prior to his
recent move to Roots Hall.

DATE 16/10/2021THE HIVEEMIRATES FA CUP4TH QUALIFYING ROUND
In a tight and often uneventful encounter at
The Hive, a second half goal from Will Evans
was enough to give Boreham Wood a place in
the First Round of the FA Cup for the eighth time
in the last ten seasons, spurred on by 651
travelling supporters.
Luke Garrard named an unchanged line up
following last week’s fantastic victory and
performance against Dagenham & Redbridge but
fit again skipper Mark Ricketts was able to take his
place on the bench. Apart from a first minute Sam
Hall free kick going over Nathan Ashmore’s goal, it
was pretty much all played in Barnet’s half early on.
Kane Smith had Wood’s first chance on five minutes,
but Aston Oxborough made a straight forward
save from his shot. Soon afterwards, Tyrone Marsh
shot over the bar when well placed. On thirteen
minutes a Kane Smith cross appeared to strike the
hand of a Barnet defender in the penalty area, but
the referee was having none of it. As the half wore
on, the home side got more into the game and
Barnet had some good possession leading in to
half time. Ephron Mason-Clark was a real threat in
this period, Following an excellent run and shot
by Mason-Clark on the half hour mark, he proved
a good save from Ashmore, Then Joe Widdowson,
headed into the side netting for the hosts.
Soon afterwards, Mason-Clark’s goal bound effort
was blocked by Jamal Fyfield. Mason Bloomfield
then headed wide for the Bees.
Boreham Wood started the second half, back in
the ascendancy when Jacob Mendy Mendy shot
over the bar before Frankie Raymond struck his
effort wide. On fifty-two minutes an excellent move
involving Scott Boden and Kane Smith created
a chance for Josh Rees who headed wide at the
end of a lovely flowing move. On the hour mark
Boreham Wood took the lead. A powerful Will
Evans header hit the crossbar before ricocheting off
the post before going in off keeper Oxborough. This
produced a jubilant reaction from the players and
the travelling Wood Army who quite frankly, didn’t
care how it went in. Evans could have doubled
Wood’s lead three minutes later, but Oxborough
was equal to it on this occasion. Soon afterwards,
Kane Smith’s shot went just wide. Barnet had a
chance to equalise on eight minutes, but Adam
Marriott couldn’t get his shot on target when well
placed. That was as good as it got for the hosts and
Wood were able to hold on comfortably much to
the delight of the travelling support.
Boreham Wood weren’t at their best at The Hive but
did just enough to win. The defence, well marshalled
by the outstanding Will Evans was rock solid and
even though chances were hard to come by for
Wood, they never really looked like conceding.

ULTIMATE
5-A-SIDE
Rules are simple! 4 players you’ve played
with and 1 player you’ve played against!
G - WES FODERINGHAM Wes joined on loan from Crystal Palace when I was at Boreham Wood FC and he was a
tremendous goalkeeper. He has had such a superb career and without a doubt would be
my GK in a 5-a-side.
D - DEJAN LOVREN I played against Dejan in a pre-season friendly. He was a man mounting and commanded
everything. Would be great to play with him and have him on my side rather than playing
against him.
M - CESC FABREGASFabregas joined Arsenal when I was
there as a youngster. Even at that age
you knew he was going be a top player.
It’s a bit of a no brainer including him in
my 5-a-side isn’t it…
M - JAMES MILNER Milner joined on loan at Swindon Town
FC. He come in as a young pro but was
so professional even at such a young
age. Great to play with and pain to
play against so he is definitely who I
want on my team.
F - JON MAIN I played with Jon at AFC Wimbledon,
and he had an unreal goal record.
Not only this but he is also ledge on a
night out!!
