21st WORLD PETROLEUM CONGRESS MOSCOW, 15-19 JUNE 2014
Responsibly Energising a Growing World
Best Practice Keynote Speaker
Guidelines All Best Practice Keynote Speakers have to register for the Congress and will receive the preferential Speaker Rate.
Objectives Best Practice Keynotes (BPK) present in-depth reviews and analysis of best practice
approaches to the selected topic, from a scientific, managerial, sustainable and practical
angle, bringing out the implications of the progress described. Coverage should be
worldwide, if not focusing on a specific region, and should include a survey of current
problems and developments in progress, and draw conclusions of best practices with a
forecast of the direction which future developments in the field should or are likely to
take. Best Practice Keynotes should help to clarify the thinking and stimulate new ideas
in the minds of specialists in the subject. They should be of interest and value to
attendees in similar areas who have no more than a general knowledge of the area
under review, as well as to senior management.
Early in the Congress cycle outstanding individuals and leaders in their industry can be
nominated by the National Committees of the WPC and the CPC online during the official
submission process. The Best Practice Keynote Speakers will then be selected by the CPC
and will agree to the subject coverage with the CPC and the Chair of the session.
International contacts can be established, and material accumulated throughout the
preparation period.
Progress Reports
In order to ensure that coverage is fully worldwide, the Congress Programme Committee
(CPC) is looking to invite Best Practice Keynote Speakers of different nationalities and
from different regions, representing all aspects of the industry at the highest level. Best
Practice Keynote Speakers are requested to work closely with the Chair of the session,
who submits regular progress reports to the CPC via the CPC Contact.
This procedure enables the CPC to see and correct any overlaps between speakers and
sessions, and to assist in any problems that may arise. A short subject introduction
laying out the focus and the main aspects of the Keynote are requested upon
appointment of a Best Practice Keynote Presenter. The final presentations have to be
produced as written papers in advance of the Congress, according to the CPC schedule
for publication in Congress brochures and programmes. Reporting dates are timed to
permit CPC members to study documents in preparation for their meetings, and Best
Practice Keynote Speakers are asked to observe these deadlines.
Submissions of Manuscripts Best Practice Keynote Speakers are requested to ensure that their papers are complete
and accurate in every detail and thoroughly checked. The CPC reserves the right to
reject or alter any manuscripts received, when improper political or commercial material
is included, or when the paper falls below an acceptable standard.
The Session
The normal time allocated to each Best Practice Keynote session is one hour. The session
will be opened by the Chair with a ten minute overview of the topic and an introduction
of the two Best Practice Keynote Speakers. Each Best Practice Keynote Speaker will then
present their paper. The presentation should be based on a power point, containing the
highlights of the pre-printed paper and a summary of any material. It should not exceed
20 minutes each. If appropriate, the Chair can decide to take a few questions at the end
of each presentation.
After the presentations, the Chair will open the session for discussion, explaining the
rules to be followed. Discussion must relate strictly to the subject of the session. Chairs
and Best Practice Keynote Speakers should participate informally, from their seats.
Three minutes should normally be the maximum time allowed for contributions, whether
from the floor or the platform. Chairs should on no account allow the presentation of
what is in effect a paper from the floor.
The Chair closes the session with a short summary of the presentation highlights and
thanks the panel and the audience.
