The word bully used to mean the total opposite ofwhat it means now.
Five hundred years ago, it meant friend, familymember or sweetheart.
The root of the word comes from the Dutch boel,meaning lover or brother.

Showing respect for people means accepting theirdifferences and treating them the way youd like to

Something or someone is making them feel insecure.
~Therefore they bully to make themselves feel better.
They could have something going on in their family.They might not feel like they are getting enoughattention from parents or teachers.
They might have watched their parents or older
siblings get their way by being angry and pushy.
Maybe they are also bullied.
They might be spoiled by their parents.

Possible reasons for being a Target.
The bully or the target are either smaller or biggerthan most kids their age.
The target may be a minority.
May have a disability.
Maybe you have a name that is not ordinary.

1. Act and look CONFIDENT Bullies go after those who appear weak
Bullies repeat actions to those who they think they can
2. If someone is picking on you dont show them it hurts It is okay to feel sad or hurt over what a bully says but try not to show
them
Express your feelings to your parents, friends and people you trust!!!

Ignore what the bully or bullies say
Agree with what they say- Bullies dont getsatisfaction if they dont get a negative reaction
Make a quick joke or a funny response Change the subject

Are you bigger and stronger than other people your age?
Do you sometimes use your size and strength to get your way?
Have you been bullied by someone in the past and feel like
you have to make up for doing the same thing to others?
Do you avoid thinking about how other people might feel ifyou say or do hurtful things to them?

If you are a bully, here are some ways to stop.
Apologize to people that you have bullied, andfollow it up by being friendly.
They might not trust you right away, but
eventually they will see that you have changed.

Activity #1: Bullying Thermometer
Each team is given a set of the BullyingThermometer activity cards.
Go over each card and discuss what that method of
bullying means. The group should develop a definition of each word.
Arrange the cards in order from the coolest type(least harmful) to the hottest type (most harmful)
according to the agreed definition.
Share the order of the cards with the larger group.
