Respiration
To stay alive, cells need:
1. Food
2. Energy
3. To get rid of waste
4. To reproduce
• Respiration produces energy for cells.
• ALL organisms, including animals and plants, break down sugar into carbon dioxide and water.
• Chemical Equation for Respiration:
C6H12O6 + O2 H2O + CO2
• The cell uses the energy made by respiration to build, repair, and reproduce cells.
• Respiration occurs in the mitochondria.
Cellular Respiration
• When cells do not have enough oxygen to do respiration, they use fermentation to make energy.
• Fermentation breaks down sugar without oxygen and makes lactic acid as a waste product.
• Lactic acid is what makes your muscles burn when you work out really hard.
