PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As I mentioned in our last newsletter our school took part in a DECD External Review last week. I want to thank the many students, staff, parents and Governing Council members who took part in these interviews. The External Reviews findings and recommendations are being
drafted in a report which needs to be signed off by our executive director in the next four weeks. Before the review team finished I was asked to a meeting with them to discuss their general observations and recommendations for the schools future improvement. Overall the panel was highly complementary of the caring culture, dedicated staff students and parents who work together in ensuring that all students were successful. Examples that were provided included:
Clear Vision of Improvement agreed to by all
with key focus areas around teaching and
learning.
Strategies such as:
o Clear expectations of students with
high expectations of success.
o Traffic Light data and reflection time for
students on goals and achievements,
end of term reports, student, teacher
and parent interviews and celebration
assemblies for success all focussed on
monitoring achievement.
Intervention programs and a Learning Hub
developing to support students in learning.
Outstanding relationships between students
staff and parents.
In very general terms their three recommendations were very supportive of the professional learning and ongoing improvement staff were undertaking around “Visible Learning”: Recommendation 1 – Endorse the focus of school development around Visible Learning in relation to:
A common language of learning across the school with Learning intentions and success criteria for student learning.
Development of “Feedback” for the improvement of student learning.
Use of data to support improvement of student learning.
Recommendation 2 – Development of Leadership capacity to drive the improvement of learning. Recommendation 3 – Development of alternative structures and forums to drive learning improvement around Visible Learning. The staff will begin this week in reviewing and discussing these initial recommendations so that we can plan to enact them in our school. As soon as the External Review Report is endorsed by the department I will inform everyone that it will be published on our website for all to consider. I will continue to keep you updated on our improvement journey.

DROP OFF AND PICKUP FROM SCHOOL
Morning and Afternoon drop offs/collections The school requests that all parents / caregivers use the Recreation Centre car park to drop off their
children in the morning and collect them in the afternoon.
We ask that parents/caregivers do not collect their children from outside the Administration building or TAFE car park.
This creates the potential for an accident and this has happened in the past. Your child’s safety is paramount.
K:\0Publications\NEWSLTR\PARENTS\2017\Term 3\20170825.docx
Car Parking Please do not park in the staff car park area, located along Blake Road. There are temporary car parks outside of the Administration Building, if you need to see the administration staff for any reason or have a meeting with a teaching staff member. We would be very appreciative if all parents / caregivers can support us in this process.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Subject Selection for 2018 This is currently underway. The web based preferences system has again been highly successful which allows for a quicker, more efficient process. All Year 8 and 9 students should have completed their selections, printed and signed their receipts and retuned them
to their home group teacher
University Entrance All students considering a pathway into University should have entered their preferences on the SATAC website. Students have the opportunity to make changes up until the 29th September. Please ensure you have completed this process to avoid any late fees.
Students will be sitting the Flinders University Test which is simply another tool that can help gain entrance to this site. This will occur later in the term.
Term 3 Reminder to all that this is a particularly busy time in terms of assessment. Please continue to support students to ensure they meet deadlines. For many of the senior students, a focus will shift from completion of folio work and move to exam preparation. We encourage students to communicate with their teachers to help with demands.

An excellent effort with the girl’s finishing 4th from 6 schools.
The boy’s started very well defeating Woodville High School, however, then came up against some tough competition from Millicent High School, Quorn Area School and Booleroo Centre. They finished the day defeating neighbour Swan Reach Area School, in a strong battle. The boys finished 3rd for the day.

CANBERRA TRIP
Science and Technology Trip – Canberra Recently a group of 39 students from Waikerie High School participated in the Science and Technology Trip to Canberra. This excursion is aimed towards higher education or employment opportunities in the fields of Science and Technology. It also embraces programs based on Australian history, democracy and civics and citizenship. Students visited many places such as Questacon, Parliament House, National Zoo and Aquarium, War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport and the National Museum of Australia just to name a few. It was a great opportunity for these students to be involved in, giving them a fun different perspective of educational learning activities from a classroom environment. Even though the students were very tired at the end, I believe that all students had an excellent time and came away with some great experiences. We look forward to running this excursion again in 2019. Thanks
Dion Higgins, Paul Tripodi, Laurena Grieger and Felicity Ziegler

NAIDOC WEEK 2017
During NAIDOC week staff and students experienced an Indigenous performance from Cultural Infusion. Students learnt about cultural awareness and Aboriginal history and were also involved in some
traditional dancing.
One thing that we found most interesting about the didgeridoo is that if you put your ear up to the mouthpiece of it, you should be able to hear a vibrating kind of noise inside. This gives you an idea of what the tone will be like.
This is similar to putting your ear up to a shell and hearing the sound of the sea. After the performance our guests, along with staff members, our indigenous students and their parents, were treated to morning tea catered by the Home Economic students, using tradition ingredients in their cooking.

HOMEWORK GROUP
Waikerie High School students and staff have continued to support an after school homework group.
This has provided students with time to complete individual tasks, or meet with their teacher for some
extra tutoring.
The homework group will continue during term three on Monday-Wednesday, 3:30-4:30pm.
For enquiries, please contact Matt McDonald (Learning Support Coordinator).

WAIKERIE HIGH SCHOOL AND WAIKERIE PRIMARY SCHOOL NAIDOC WEEK ACTIVITY
In a cooperative venture between Waikerie Primary and Waikerie High School, Reception and Year 8 students were matched up into buddy pairs.
Teachers Sam Parsons and Suzie Parsons organised the task as part of NAIDOC week, which was held in Week 10 of Term 2.
The Reception and Year 8 students viewed a Dreaming story called “Thukeri” together. The Receptions then painted a picture about the story on a small piece of wood, using some Aboriginal art designs. The Year 8 Woodwork class then cut up the pictures using coping saws, making them into jigsaws.
The Year 8 buddies then proudly presented the Receptions their jigsaws and assisted them to complete their puzzles during NAIDOC week. The Receptions were thrilled to get such individual items which were worked on by their buddies with care and pride.

COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE
Children are required to attend school from when they turn 6 until they turn 16
(Section 76 of the Education Act 1972). Children aged 16 must participate full-
time in an approved learning program (Education (Compulsory Education Age)
Amendment Act 2007). There is no compulsion to attend school once a child
turns 17 or is 16 years old and has achieved a qualification under an approved
learning program.
Regular attendance and participation in schooling is an important factor in
educational and life success. Students who skip school are at risk of alienation
from education that can lead to decreased options for future pathways.
If you work at a school site you are also responsible for encouraging students to
remain in school and work closely with parents and guardians to maximise
learning opportunities.
Approved learning programs
traditional secondary school, including studying towards: o SACE (South Australia Certificate of Education) o International Baccalaureate (IB) o Steiner Education (Waldorf Schools) Secondary Certificate
technical and further education (TAFE) courses or accredited courses offered by registered training organisations
apprenticeships or traineeships university degrees, diplomas or other university award courses other programs authorised by the Minister for Education and Child
Development a combination of the above
Where the young person has achieved a SACE or other qualification, under an
approved learning program, there is no compulsion for them to continue to
participate past the age of 16.
For vocational education qualifications, Certificate 2 is considered sufficient, as
it provides a defined qualification which leads into further vocational education,
such as Certificate 3, which could be completed via a registered training
organisation.
Valid absences
Valid reasons for parents to keep student/s away from school include:
the student is too sick to leave the house or has an infectious disease like chicken pox, mumps or measles
the student has an injury preventing movement around school the student is going with his or her parents on a family holiday which cannot
be arranged in school vacations. This should be arranged with the Principal prior to the absence by applying for a school exemption.
the principal is provided with any genuine and acceptable reason preventing the student's attendance.
Notification of absences
On a student's return to school, a note must be supplied to cover the days
missed. Parents are also encouraged to contact the school if their child will be
away.
If a student has seen a medical practitioner, e.g. doctor, dentist etc., a note or
appointment card from the practitioner may be provided to verify the absence.
Attendance and engagement social workers
If a student refuses to attend school, parents are encouraged to contact school
staff.
You may need to seek assistance from attendance and engagement social
workers, who work with school staff and parents to encourage and support the
student to regularly attend school.
Late arrivals or early departures
In some cases students may arrive late to school, or leave early. This may be due
to family reasons or transport issues.
Students may leave early or arrive late when they have scheduled classes if they
provide a note from their parents with a valid reason. Parents are encouraged to
schedule appointments outside of school hours.

EXEMPTION INFORMATION
The Minister (or delegate) may exempt a child from attending school (Section
81A of the Education Act 1972). If parents or guardians wish to take their child
out of school temporarily or permanently, they must apply for an exemption.
Students must attend school regularly until the exemption has been approved.
Parents can be referred to the sa.gov.au website for more information on
compulsory attendance.
For more detailed information about exemptions, see the principal's guide to
exemptions (PDF, 1.2 MB).
Temporary exemptions
Principals have the authority to approve temporary exemptions for less than one
month for the reason of:
medical other/conditional
If the exemption is for more than one month the application requires approval by
the Central Delegate or:
Executive Director, Association of Independent Schools of South Australia Catholic Education South Australia
Principals can approve temporary exemptions for up to 12 months for family
travel.
Permanent exemptions
Students under 15 cannot be given a permanent exemption unless there are
strong recommendations from the school and the Department.
Students aged 16 do not need an exemption if they can provide evidence to the
school that they are:
attending TAFE or other approved learning programs doing an apprenticeship or traineeship
Exemption for full-time employment
Students aged 15 and 16 who want to start working full time will need to apply
for a permanent exemption. To qualify:
students under 16 must be working more than 30 hours a week students 16 and older must be working more than 25 hours per week.
Students are able to work more than one position to make up the total number of
hours.
The employer will need to provide a letter of offer (DOCX, 13.7 KB),
specifying the number of hours per week that must be submitted with the
application for exemption.
Home education
Students who are 16 and wish to continue their home education program will
need an exemption until they turn 17.
See Home education on the sa.gov.au website for further guidance.
