Home Reading over the holidays Top tips to create a reader-friendly home Page Content Create a special reading space Creating an inviting space to read at home can be easy, fun and cost effective. Pick a quiet corner in your home, the cosier the better. Fill the nook with blankets, pillows and good lighting. Let the kids help decorate it, it can be a fun family activity. Read in front of your kids Lead by example. It's very important for children to see adults reading. Pick up a book when you can. Talk to your children about something interesting you've read. Actions speak louder than words. Make a wish list Encourage your children to update their reading wish list often. Having a list handy can be helpful when family and friends need some gift inspiration. Also, it will help decrease the amount of unwanted and unused books in your house. Host a book swap party Have your friends and family around to bring their used books or unwanted presents for a book swap party. This is a great way to save money on new reading material for your little ones. It's also an easy way to shift books out of your home to make way for new ones! Diversify the reading material Try to include as much seasonal and diverse read-ing material as possible. Broaden your child's horizons with books based on different cultures. It's also a good idea to try have books or magazines based on topics they're learning in school.

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

Principal’s Message 27th June 2019

Good luck Krista Barnes We would like to congratulate you on your appointment as ‘acting principal’ Term 3 and 4 at Yaapeet Primary School. We know you will be a terrific school principal. The children and community of Yaapeet are very fortunate to have you. We thank you for your commitment to the children and families of Sebastopol. You have been a valued member of our school community. Your leadership and work in Numeracy, exemplary classroom practice, Occupational Health and Safety, Professional and Peer Mentoring, School Council, Student Leadership, Wellbeing, Camps and Excursions, Graduations and such much more has been valued by all. We hope you return in 2020 to Sebastopol Primary School. Welcome back Katherine Williams The Year 5/6 class will have a regular Classroom Relief Teacher from July 15 – August 16. From 19th August Katherine Williams will return to Sebastopol Primary School to take the senior primary class, following 2.5 years of teaching in the United Kingdom. We are thrilled that Katherine is available to work with the Year 5/6 class. Mid Year Reports Please make the time to read the ‘Mid-Year Report’ with your children. It is important to reflect on learning goals and congratulate students on their progress and achievements at this midpoint of the learning year. We have had a focus on ‘reading’ across the school so please make particular note of your child’s progress in this area of learning. The reports reflect a great deal of work and learning by your child, the comments and progression point marks are reflected in their Portfolios by work samples and formal assessments. The Portfolios will be shared at the Three-Way-Conferences early next term.

Term 3 commences July 15th Have a safe and cosy winter holiday. There are a few free activities on at the Sebastopol library that students may enjoy. This is a great time to relax as families, share board and card games, go for walks in the Central Highlands area and read together. Please take the time to read the ‘Top Tips for Home Reading’ attached to the newsletter this week. Have a safe and happy holiday

Michelle Wilson Principal
