Young Composers Our aim is to empower our students with the art of the English language. The English Syllabus refers to students “composing a range of texts”. These texts may be written, digital or multimodal.

Year 3 students have been composing sentences using adjectives and adverbs.

Malachi Millward 3L ‘The water is murky but gentle. The sky is dark and cold in feeling. The shells and rocks are uncomfortable as can be. The structures are not finished and the beauty all gone. Little light comes through. Horizon is dark as black, no one in sight. No birds, no life as far as the eye can see.’

Aiden Zoszak 3L ‘The sand is cold and wet. The sun is not shining at all. It is nearly dawn and the water looks dark turquoise and possessed by a ghost. As the moonlight shines before me I see the wrecked ferry port in the distance.’

Claire Emmerton 3JL ‘The smell of apple pie wafted up the stairs. Outside I saw Grandpa harvesting our crop and Uncle Walt was out in the pasture

milking the cows. Mina was clanging around the kitchen as I clambered down the stairs and ran out to the old fig tree and climbed up to the loop to watch the pigeon chicks and Anna mount our dull coloured horses to ride to town.’

Congratulations to the following students for receiving an Expectation Certificate. Lexie Landrak, Tyson Dagenais, Dion Hansson, Chloe Graham-Smith, Austin Holley,

Scarlett Fergusson, Oliver Fergusson, Tawonga Shenje, Asher Dainton, Cameron Thomas, Scarlett Beaumont, Jonathon Ryan, Stella Raward, Nigel Kerr, Robert King, Isabella Alksnis, Peter Twidell, Ryan Iggo, Patrick day, Grace Hyland, Alyssa Aulburn, Keilan Leatham and Ceilidh Lloyd.

Medical Alert

There has been a reported case of Slapped Cheek in Year 3. Please make sure you are aware of the symptoms

outlined below, and treat accordingly.

Slapped Cheek Syndrome

(Parvovirus B19 infection, fifth disease, erythema infectiosum)

Symptoms Mild fever, red cheeks, itchy lace-like rash, and possibly cough, sore throat or runny nose. School or home? They can go to school as it is most infectious before the rash appears.

How can I help prevent spread? Pregnant women who may have been exposed to parvovirus should contact their doctor. Careful hand washing; avoid sharing drinks. Usually there are no complications for a pregnant woman or her baby following exposure to a person with parvovirus B19 infection. Mrs Wendy Mwanga

CANTEEN NEWS

Support your canteen and make a good canteen even better! Just as we as parents like to support our children to be the best version of themselves… with the support of the Manly West community your canteen can be it’s best self yet!

Supporting the canteen takes many forms: There is volunteering on the regular roster; signing up to an emergency volunteer list to cover others who find themselves unable to make a rostered shift; it’s sharing unbeatable kid friendly recipes; it’s supplying products to the canteen that are better than some we may be currently using – take a bow Chris Rey of Eco-Wash and

watch this space for others soon to start supplying other products!! We love our canteen and want it to grow up into the best possible version of itself yet so come on and support us in our efforts!!

To help out at any time or discuss your canteen issues please contact us via email [email protected] or call the school 9948 2257 and ask for the canteen or just pop in. Thanks, Isobel

LIBRARY NEWS

Stage 3 Library

What an interesting term we’ve had in the Library with Years 5 and 6. Year 6 has been looking at the topic of

Inspiration, linking with their HSIE unit on social justice. They have investigated what makes people inspiring

and how they can inspire others. Picture books are a great way to learn big ideas. We used Dr Martin Luther

King’s I Have a Dream, illustrated by Kadir Nelson and The Amnesty International picture book Dreams of

Freedom to inspire them to think about what freedom means to them.

Year 5 has been finishing films for their own short film festival TropWest. They have discovered filmmaking is

a lot harder than they imagined, but have had a lot of fun along the way learning about writing, directing,

camera work and editing! We definitely have some aspiring Luhrmanns, Blanchetts and Jackmans!

FLYING OF FLAGS - CITIZENSHIP DAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2015

_____________________________________________

MESSAGE: The following message has been received from the New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet, Protocol and Special Events Unit: “All Australians are encouraged to fly or display the Australian National Flag to celebrate Citizenship Day for 2015.

Citizenship Day was introduced in 2001. It is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate and value

Australian citizenship, the peaceful, prosperous and inclusive society we share and to reflect on the role we play in building our nation and shaping our country's future as proud Australian citizens.

In accordance with flag protocol, the Australian National Flag should be flown all day on Thursday 17 September 2015.

To contribute to this significant occasion it is requested that on all NSW Government buildings and establishments, where flag poles are available, the Australian National Flag and the State Flag be flown at full mast all day”.

Thank you for your co-operation.

legitimate concern for a child’s safety. Also, whilst looking for children and contacting parents, our Educators are having less

time with the children in their care. Messages can be written ahead of time in each room’s ‘Parent Message Book’ or by email [email protected] (with at least 24 hrs notice). We can be contacted at late notice by phone on 9948 8113. There is a Non-Notification of Absence Charge of $11 (incl
