Learning the fundamentals—and taking the fear out of creativityBy using Choreographing From Within: Developing a Habit of Inquiry as an Artist, you will

• work with your students to create movement that originates from a specific intent;

• ground your students in the elements of craft while giving them the courage to go beyond the craft to find their own voice;

• provide your students with explicit instructions for improvisations throughout the creative process;

• nurture the unique style that exists within each of your students by helping them to break boundaries;

• use explorations, reflective questions, discussions of key concepts, and other tools to guide your students as they develop their choreographic skills.

One school of thought regarding choreography says to teach only the rules of fundamental design and form and have students create from formulas. Another school of thought eschews the fundamentals and focuses on creativity.

Author Diana Green espouses both theories and blends them beautifully in Choreographing From Within: Developing a Habit of Inquiry as an Artist. Her approach to integrating the art and craft of choreography grounds students in the fundamentals and takes the fear out of creativity.

Green uses an inquiry-based approach to engage students, placing them at the center of the learning and allowing for multiple pathways of learning. Rather than present a cookbook approach with recipes to follow, Green offers a thorough understanding of the medium, provides examples, and allows students to learn, explore, and create based on their own unique styles.

Choreographing From Within will help students• learn to create movement that originates from a specific intent,• understand the elements of choreography,• synthesize those elements through a series of exercises in which they are

given explicit instruction, and• break formulaic boundaries as they create their own dances.

Choreographing From Within helps students find the unique artist within themselves. That unique artist springs from the inquiry-based approach that puts students in the driver’s seat and provides numerous pathways and tools for them to develop their abilities to their fullest.

Exploring the commonalities among the artsDance Composition: An Interrelated Arts Approach helps students investigate dance movement from a multidisciplinary perspective—something that no other dance text or package does.

This interactive package contains a book, music CD, and companion Web site and provides 28 improvisational exercises that provide perspective on the shared characteristics among the arts for inspiration and motivation for dance making. The exercises examine traditional and contemporary art forms from around the world and explore ways to physically interpret what is heard, seen, spoken, and emoted through movement experimentation.

The music CD, which is bound into the book, contains original compositions that enrich dance exercises and movement exploration assignments. To help students and teachers incorporate technology in their creative process, this Web site also provides access to music software, instructions on creating computer-assisted music, a journal entry handout for each activity, self-assessment handouts, and rubrics.

No other art form interacts so pervasively with the other arts than dance. Dance Composition: An Interrelated Arts Approach will help students from secondary school through university levels create artistic work that inspires and empowers both performers and viewers.

Increase confidence in all phases of choreographyChoreography: A Basic Approach Using Improvisation is the complete guide to understanding the entire choreography process from concept to stage production. It will help you

• use improvisation and explore movements representative of an idea, concept, or dance style;

• vary movements based on the understanding of space, time, energy, and shape;

• meet three of the seven National Dance Content Standards: understanding choreographic principles, creating and communicating meaning, and using critical and creative thinking skills;

• enhance choreography with special lighting effects, slide and PowerPoint projections, virtual dance performances, video conferencing, and motion capture;

• integrate choreographic form and structure to shape a dance for meaning or intent; and

• plan a dance performance, from auditions and rehearsals to technical support and final production.

Whether you are a dancer, choreographer, or instructor, Choreography: A Basic Approach Using Improvisation is an invaluable resource for enriching your choreographic experiences and creating memorable stage productions.

and significant choreography, and dance literature of each time period• History Highlight boxes containing unusual facts, events, and details • History Trivia, providing insights into how dance relates to the history,

art, and society of the time period • Web sites to encourage further exploration• Developing a Deeper Perspective sections that encourage students

to learn and perform period dances, observe and write performance reports, and develop research projects and WebQuests

These activities are presented as reproducible templates that include perceiving, creating, performing, writing, and presenting oral activities infused with technology. Teachers can use these activities as optional chapter assignments or as extended projects to help apply the information and to use technology and other integrated arts sources to make the history of dance more meaningful.

It helps new dancers learn how to express themselves through dance.

The author uses a basic movement vocabulary that you can use to describe and evaluate movement possibilities, improve sensitivity when working in groups, develop critical-thinking skills, and express ideas and emotions through movement.

Whatever your students’ level of artistic awareness, this engaging text will inspire innovation and help you guide students in the discovery of their own creativity and sense of dance.

A step-by-step approach to dancing, dance making, and responding to danceSystematic in its approach, Experiencing Dance: From Student to Dance Artist places teachers in the roles of facilitators who encourage critical thinking and student involvement in the learning process. This text is designed for students who have had some dance experience and are interested in exploring the art of dance.

With movement experiences, written assignments, more than 45 self-paced lessons, and complete guidelines for building a portfolio, the book provides a complete curriculum progression that can also be used to supplement an existing curriculum.

Whether you use the textbook for one semester or two, you’ll find there is nothing like Experiencing Dance for instilling in your students a fresh, new appreciation of dance.

Expose students to a variety of dance styles and forms—without leaving the classroom!Exploring Dance Forms and Styles: A Guide to Concert, World, Social, and Historical Dance helps all teachers introduce students to a variety of dance forms and styles—without having to leave the classroom!

This book–DVD package is an all-in-one resource that will help your students appreciate various dance forms and begin to recognize the characteristics that make each dance form or style distinct. And because of the way the information is packaged, you can be a dance novice yourself and still expertly guide your students in being both an effective audience member and an astute observer.

Exploring Dance Forms and Styles presents a systematic approach for building four critical thinking skills in dance:

• Viewing: What did you see?• Connecting: What do you know?• Responding: What do you think? What do you wonder?• Performing: What can you do?

With Exploring Dance Forms and Styles, you can select individual dances as you like, or develop complete dance units; you can use the materials to meet state standards and national dance standards; and you can introduce various forms of dance to students in geographic areas where they would otherwise not be able to view live dance performances. But best of all, you can deepen students’ understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of dance.

Tools, activities, and instructional strategies for teaching skillful movementMovement skills are the building blocks that provide students the foundation for leading physically active, healthy lives. This book provides a perfect balance of knowledge base, pedagogy, and curriculum content—delivered with highly practical learning tools and activities—so you can help your students develop movement skills that foster healthful habits.

Teaching Movement Education introduces you to the history and philosophy of movement education and guides you through the movement education framework that you can use in your teaching. In the second part of the book, you move from learning about the education to incorporating it into your classes. Here, you learn how to teach the four basic movement concepts and their related elements through 163 activities in the four concept areas. The book also supplies 6 educational games unit lesson plans, 6 educational gymnastics lesson plans, and 5 educational dance lesson plans.

Teaching Movement Education provides you a complete framework to help your students build their movement skills and, in the process, create a foundation for enjoying being active movers throughout their lives.

Transforming effects of globalization on danceDance in a World of Change: Reflections on Globalization and Cultural Difference presents a range of international perspectives on dance pedagogy, the body, performance, and dance and culture. The text expands the discourse of dance that connects it to the critical, political, moral, and aesthetic dimensions of contemporary society, and it explores how globalization is influencing and shaping the future of dance.

The contributing writers bring their distinguished records as dance educators, choreographers, critics, and scholars from around the world to this book as they address dance as:

• a form of human empowerment or cultural resistance;• a means of recognizing diverse cultural experience and communicating

common humanity;• an expression of social conflict, injustice, violence, and marginalization;

and • an educational process that transcends the particular and encompasses

commonality.
