Schrenk Student Photography Institute

The Schrenk Student Photography Institute is an intensive photography program aimed at

highly motivated Collier County high school students. Each year, a class of up to 20 students is

selected to participate. The program consists of four weekend workshops during the academic

year and a two-week seminar in June.

The institute is designed to give students broad experiences in various areas of photography,

including the camera, lighting, composition, digital technology and portfolio preparation. The

program also assists students in making vocational decisions, understanding visual

communications and preparing for college-level image-making with a curriculum that

emphasizes the craft and aesthetic of visual problem solving equally.

A student’s first two years in the program will concentrate on technical and formal excellence

with the third year dedicated to the student’s individual areas of interest and building a

college-level or exhibition portfolio. Work produced by the students will be exhibited at The

Baker Museum and sites throughout the Artis—Naples campus. The primary instructor for the

Photography Institute is J. Tomas Lopez, M.F.A., Professor of Photography, and Director of

About Your Museum Visit What is a museum? A museum is an institution devoted to acquiring, caring for, studying and displaying objects of lasting interest. It provides a unique educational experience through its exhibitions, related programming and activities inspiring curiosity and creative thinking. Why can’t I touch the artwork? All of us have natural oil in our skin that can damage the paintings, drawings and sculptures. We want to make sure that our artwork is kept in excellent condition so that it may be enjoyed for years to come. Remember to look with your eyes and not your hands. Thanks for doing your part to save art! Can I take pictures in the museum? Still photography for personal use is permitted unless otherwise noted. Photography may not be permitted in certain exhibitions due to copyright restrictions. Interchangeable-lens cameras, tripods and flash photography are not permitted. Why do I need to stay on the tour or with a chaperone? The best way for you to learn about the art is to listen and participate with the docent, your tour guide. During your visit, your chaperones are responsible for you, so you must stay with them. We want to make sure that you and all of our guests have a fun and safe time at the museum. Are bags allowed in the museum? When you bring a bag to the museum we ask that it be a small bag. We prefer that you leave backpacks and totes either at school or on the bus. You should not need them on your visit. Ladies, if you are carrying a purse, please opt for a small one on the day of your visit. The museum staff may request that anyone check their bag if it is considered too large. How do I behave in the museum? The museum is a fun place where we encourage you to learn about art, so go ahead and ask questions and talk about what you think about the artwork. Just remember to use your inside voice and raise your hand before speaking. Please walk while at the museum, whether you are in a gallery or in one of the sculpture gardens. When going up stairs, be careful and use the handrail. Is all the artwork kid-friendly? Some works of art contain subject matter that may not be appropriate for all audiences. Instructors, please use your discretion when viewing the exhibitions. When in doubt, ask a docent or museum staff member.

2015-16 Exhibitions

Jan Yoors: A Retrospective September 5-October 11, 2015 A remarkably gifted craftsman, Jan Yoors excelled in tapestry, painting, photography and drawing. His extraordinary life informed much of his practice: After absconding with a Gypsy tribe at age 12, he worked closely with the Allies to help the Gypsies escape genocide during World War II. This exhibition celebrates one of the most prolific, but perhaps understudied, artists of the 20th century. Organized by The Baker Museum.

Weegee by Weegee: Photographs from the Jean Pigozzi Collection September 5-November 8, 2015 Intense and often darkly humorous, Weegee’s voyeuristic portraits capture the excitement and stark realities of urban life. Weegee shot street vendors, kissing moviegoers and the victims of fresh crime scenes before the police’s arrival. His documentary-style immediacy revealed his perspective on the reality of New York City and influenced generations of photographers and filmmakers. Weegee by Weegee intimately details the extremes of the modern city.

Celebrating 15 Years of Collecting at The Baker Museum September 5, 2015-January 31, 2016 Drawn from the museum’s permanent collections of American, Mexican and European art, Celebrating 15 Years of Collecting at The Baker Museum marks an important milestone in the history of the institution. Showcasing iconic pieces of the museum’s collection as well as rarely seen works, this exhibition celebrates the individuals whose passion and vision helped assemble one of the most impressive compilations of 20th century art in Southwest Florida. Organized by The Baker Museum.

Schrenk Student Photography Opens September 5, 2015 Generously underwritten by George & Wynnell Schrenk

Approximately 100 works from high school students in the year-round Schrenk Student Photography Institute, led by J. Tomas Lopez, Professor of Photography and Director of Electronic Media at the University of Miami.

Yves Saint Laurent + Halston: Fashioning the ’70s November 7, 2015-March 6, 2016 Yves Saint Laurent + Halston: Fashioning the ’70s offers a unique perspective on two of the best-known fashion designers in modern history who defined the sexy and glamorous looks of the 1970s. The approximately 80 ensembles and 20 accessories—drawn from The Museum at FIT’s extensive collection of pieces from both designers— reflect the social, economic and political realities of their creators and the world at large.
