Currently, there are an estimated 3.9 million people infected
with hepatitis C and 1 million with hepatitis B in this country
alone. Furthermore, there are many Americans living with
hepatitis who are unaware of their disease status. For example,
it is estimated that 70 percent of the estimated four million Americans
infected with hepatitis C, do not know they have the disease.
Hence the need for more screening and testing, education, and
resource information.
It is the mission of the Nevada State Health Division’s Hepatitis
Program to provide the foundation for the prevention, control,
and elimination of viral hepatitis in Nevada.
In line with its mission statement, the Nevada State Health
Division developed this Nevada Statewide Hepatitis Resource
Directory to make it possible for people with viral hepatitis,
people at risk for hepatitis, and providers to locate available
hepatitis services and referral sources throughout the state. In
addition, the information collected for this Directory will allow
the Health Division to determine the hepatitis service gaps that
exist within each Nevada county.

Hepatitis OverviewFollowing is a brief overview of the difference between HepatitisA, B, C, D, and E:
In the United States, viral hepatitis is an important public healthproblem because it causes serious illness, it affects millions, and ithas a close connection with HIV. Included below is informationfor Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. This information was provided bythe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the NevadaState Health Division:
Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus(HAV). Hepatitis A can affect anyone. In the United States, hepatitis A can occur in situations ranging from isolated cases ofdisease to widespread epidemics. Hepatitis A virus is spread from

person to person by putting something in the mouth that has beencontaminated with the stool of a person with hepatitis A. This typeof transmission is called "fecal-oral." For this reason, the virus ismore easily spread in areas where there are poor sanitaryconditions or where good personal hygiene is not observed. Goodpersonal hygiene and proper sanitation can help prevent hepatitisA. Vaccines are available for long-term prevention of hepatitis Avirus infection in persons 12 months of age and older. Immuneglobulin is available for short-term prevention of hepatitis A virusinfection in individuals of all ages.
Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks theliver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can causelifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. HBV is spread when blood or body fluidsfrom an infected person enters the body of a person who is notinfected. For example, HBV is spread through having sex with aninfected person without using a condom (the efficacy of latexcondoms in preventing infection with HBV is unknown, but theirproper use might reduce transmission), by sharing drugs, needles,or "works" when "shooting” drugs, through needle sticks or sharpsexposures on the job, or from an infected mother to her babyduring birth. Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age groups toprevent hepatitis B virus infection. There is also treatment therapyfor hepatitis B.
Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus(HCV), which is found in the blood of persons who have thedisease. HCV is spread by contact with the blood of an infectedperson, and is transmitted in much the same way as hepatitis B; bysharing drugs and the preparation tools, including coke straws;through needle sticks or sharps exposures on the job; and bloodtransfusions performed before 1992. There is also a risk whenreceiving tattoos and body piercing when equipment is not sterile.
3
INTRODUCTION_____________________________________________________
Although the virus can be transmitted from infected mother tobaby during birth, the rate is less than five percent. The incidence ofsexually transmitting hepatitis C is also low. There is no vaccinefor hepatitis C, however there is treatment.
Hepatitis D is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis D virus(HDV), a defective virus that needs the hepatitis B virus to exist, and is transmitted in the same way as hepatitis B. HDV is found inthe blood of persons infected with the virus. There is treatment forhepatitis D.
Hepatitis E is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV)and is transmitted in much the same way as the hepatitis A virus.Hepatitis E, however, does not occur often in the United States.
