    QUESTION 1: (50 MARKS)

When it comes to developing new resorts, we do not apply a standardformula. One and Only is a guarantee that each of our resorts will provide a distinctive andunique experience.     All the resorts are designed with the utmost care by the very best in the field. Processesare developed, implemented, monitored and managed in the most effective and efficientway. Le St Geran is often considered as the jewel in the One and Only crown. This resortwas voted as the best resort in the world by the International Traveler .It has in place a

    Quality management system. Besides the Hazard analysis and critical control point(HACCP) methodology has been implemented. Thus a consistently high quality service isensured.

    In an industry like the hospitality industry the people factor is critical. Le St Geran hasinvested a lot on its people. Training is considered as an investment and not a cost. Thusit has its own training centre. Further welfare of employees is not neglected. Transportfacilities are provided to employees together with food. The organisation performs all thecore activities while some of the support activities are outsourced. However the biggestchallenge is the control of these outsourced activities.

    Inventory management is one area which has retained attention in recent times. Theorganisation is using Just in time for fresh foodstuffs. Management of the supply chain isessential for JIT to be successful .

    Another challenge faced by the operations manager of Le St Geran is capacity utilization.Unoccupied rooms imply wasted capacity for a resort. The organisation has a network oftour operators who are allotted a given number of rooms. However many of them fail to sellthe allotted rooms. The Operations Manager uses the concept of overbooking in order tooptimize capacity utilization.However overbooking has its drawbacks. Thus a bettersolution is still wanting.

    QUESTION 5: (25 MARKS)

    Purity Ltd is an organization involved in the manufacture of cotton fabric for the

    garment industry. It has a well developed and implemented quality management

    system in place.

    (a) Discuss briefly the various stages involved in the development andimplementation of the quality planning and control activity.

    (7 marks)

    (b) Checking should be carried out at critical points in the productionchain .Identify the points where checking should take place.

    (8 marks)

    (c) Process control monitoring of twenty samples provided thefollowing data

    Defects are defects per square metre of fabric.
