Do you want to blend your gray or do you want complete coverage? What products do you use on your hair? Are you currently taking any medicaons? What type of water do you have at home? If medicaons or hard water are a concern, do a Malibu C Makeover, which can re- move medicaon and mineral build-up so you have a clean canvas. When processed on gray or white, non-pigmented hair, the hair treats the vitamin technology of Malibu C Crystal Gel as if it’s the filler for color and absorbs the vitamin where melanin would have been. As Crystal Gel processes under heat, the natural vitamin turns to a sugar and caramelizes. This caramelized effect can cause white, non-pigmented hair to have a pink cast. This does not harm the hair, and the pink cast is not permanent. If you choose to process Crystal Gel on white, non-pigmented hair, we recom- mend you follow these simple instrucons aſter you have finished the treatment and have rinsed Crystal Gel from the hair: Shampoo thoroughly with Malibu C Un-Do-Goo to remove any residual Crystal Gel, then rinse and repeat. If possible, do not use any heat tools when styling the guests’ hair to guard against any potenal for a pink cast. If you find that basic gray coverage methods don’t cut it for extremely resistant grays, try these opons: First thing to try: If processing at room temperature for 45 minutes doesn’t work, put them under heat. Process 10 minutes under LOW heat with a processing cap, then remove cap and set at room temperature for 25 minutes. Second thing to try: Use 1 level darker than your target color. Tip of the MonthJanuary 2019

Some people call the gray in their hair “wisdom highlights,” while others view their silver streaks with far less affection. Below are tips to help guests who want to cover their very resistant grays.

Consultation is key. Some questions to ask your gray guests are:• Have you had any issues in the past with covering gray hair?• Do you want to blend your gray or do you want complete coverage?• What products do you use on your hair?• Are you currently taking any medications? • What type of water do you have at home?

If medications or hard water are a concern, do a Malibu C Makeover, which can re-move medication and mineral build-up so you have a clean canvas. If you choose to process Crystal Gel on white, non-pigmented hair, we recom-mend you follow these simple instructions after you have finished the treatment and have rinsed Crystal Gel from the hair:

• Shampoo thoroughly with Malibu C Un-Do-Goo to remove any residual Crystal Gel, then rinse and repeat.• If possible, do not use any heat tools when styling the guests’ hair to guard against any potential for a pink cast.

If you find that basic gray coverage methods don’t cut it for extremely resistant grays, try these options:

First thing to try: If processing at room temperature for 45 minutes doesn’t work, put them under heat. Process 10 minutes under LOW heat with a processing cap, then remove cap and set at room temperature for 25 minutes.

Second thing to try: Use 1 level darker than your target color. This will work best for someone who is 70% gray or more. (Target level is 6N) Mixing 1 part 50-5n and 1 part 20 Volume CHI Color Generator.

Last resort: Mix more color and less CHI Color Generator. This will give you more color deposit. Mixing 1 ½ parts of 50 series color and 1 part 20 Volume CHI Color Generator.

With any of the above techniques you can always pre-soften. This is normally around the hairline area and in your guest’s part area. W (warm) standard color series can be used by itself, WITHOUT adding any developer to pre-soften the hair.• Levels 1 – 5 use 5W• Levels 6 – 8 use 8W• Levels 9 – 10 use 9G

1. Apply color lightly to resistant areas of the hair.2. Mix the Coverage Plus formula with 20 Volume and apply your color over the pre-softened hair.3. Process 10 minutes under LOW heat with a processing cap, then remove cap and set at room temperature for 25 min-

utes -- OR -- process 45 minutes at room temperature.

One last tip: If hairline/part line hairs won’t lay down after applied with color, or are overly resistant, place an end wrap on top to maintain body heat and keep color from drying out.

Tip of the MonthApril 2019

Have you ever offered a product or service to your guest and received a cold stare? This indicates that you’re either trying to sell them something they don’t need, or you haven’t rehearsed your pitch. Both reasons create uncomfortable situations and can ruin your confidence in selling and upselling.

Selling is the ability to transfer goods to or render services for another in exchange for money. Pretty basic, right? Upselling is a sales technique where a seller induces the guest to purchase more expensive items, upgrades or add-ons in an attempt to make a more profitable sale. In order to make a successful sale or upsell, you need to sound convincing and confident to ensure you’re meeting your business financial goals. More importantly, though, you need to create a sales mindset to focus on the end-benefit to your guest. Instead of selling or upselling in an attempt to make a more profitable sale, you want to sell or upsell in an attempt to make your guest trust your expertise wholeheartedly.

There are two main reasons why a person buys into anything. Number one, they see everyone else doing it. How many of you can relate to that? But there’s another more interesting reason that’s a bit more versatile in growth for a business: they really believed the person who sold them.

What if you go from selling to your guest to selling for your guest? We know that some guests want a VIP treat-ment, some guests want the in-and-out quick service, while others genuinely want to know how to better care for their hair and scalp. It’s always a good idea to understand the demographics of who and how you’d like to target what you’re selling, but it’s an even better idea to figure out how to individualize each experience.

For a better analogy, think of The Mens Warehouse, a custom tailoring brand that basically offers two things: a suit you can just buy or suit you can have custom tailored to fit just right. It’s amazing how they take all the mea-surements you need, a little pin here, a little pin there and wow, you look like a million bucks! There are no sales or marketing secrets; you just need to custom tailor your products and services to fit your guest’s needs.

Here are two easy steps to do this:

1. Understand your guest: Learn about each person that sits in your chair. Of course, you want to learn their grooming needs, but what else do they like that can make you incorporate a new technique, product, etc.? What event, celebration, goal, etc. is your guest getting ready for that you could help them with?

2. Learn what to say: You will only know what to say by practicing what to say. By practicing your services and product knowledge over and over, this will help build the confidence to know and express your recommenda-tions. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect,” so put some effort into practice.

Once you drive it into your mind that your guests do not want to be sold, you will have a better chance of not only selling but upselling as the final result. This means that you will begin to more naturally learn about and execute the correct terminologies, techniques, and goals for each one of your guests.

Selling and Upselling: What are the Differences?

1. Starting near your hairline, pick up three strands of hair, as if you’re starting a French braid.

2. Cross the strand closest to the top of your head (1) over the middle section (2).

3. Cross the bottom section (3) over the new middle section (1).

4. Cross the new top section (2) over the new middle (3), and then the bottom (1) over the middle (2).

5. Drop the middle strand (2) down, so it blends in with the rest of your hair.

6. Pick up a piece about the same size from near your part.

7. This strand (4) becomes your new top section. Cross it over the middle to continue the braid.

8. Cross the bottom strand (1) over the new section (4), and repeat steps 2-8 all the way around your head.

9. When you get behind your opposite ear, do a normal, three-strand braid for about an inch.

Green hair season has arrived! Too much fun in the swimming pool can lead to hair woes. Chlorinated hair creates a myriad of problems above and beyond turning hair green. When coloring or perming over chlorine build-up, the results will be less than satisfactory. Your hair color may not reach the correct level and tone and it will fade quickly. A perma-nent wave will have a weak curl pattern and rapidly relax.

How does chlorine build-up occur? When hair is exposed to pool wa-ter, copper and chlorine are absorbed. When hair dries, the copper and chlorine remain. Repeated chlorine exposure causes more build-up cre-ating a barrier on the hair shaft. Build-up makes hair feel crunchy or even slimy, depending on the condition of the hair and amount of sun exposure. The copper oxidizes, turning the hair green.

Removing chlorine build-up from the hair with a Malibu Makeover:

1. Pour entire contents of Crystal Gel packet into a bowl or applicator and mix with two ounces of warm water.2. Shake well and allow to gel.3. Shampoo with Malibu Un-Do-Goo and rinse.4. Section wet hair. Work gel through hair and scalp using maximum pressure of palms and finger tips to ensure saturation.5. Apply processing cap and allow to process with dryer heat: * Normal build-up: 5-10 minutes * Moderate build-up: 15-20 minutes * Heavy build-up: 30-45 minutes6. Scrunch hair periodically to ensure heat is evenly penetrating the hair proteins.7. Shampoo with Un-Do-Goo and rinse.8. Follow with Miracle Repair or a Malibu Concentr8 Conditioner.

Tips for guests to prevent chlorine damage:

* Advise your guest to always wet their hair with tap water before entering the pool. Wet hair won’t absorb as much pool water because it is already saturated. * Apply any of our FS conditioners over wet hair prior to swimming for added protection. Shampoo hair before it has time to dry when leaving the pool. The chlorine will be less likely to crystallize on the hair shaft. * Purchase a Malibu Swimmers Wellness Kit and use faithfully. * The Malibu Makeover is an additional cost to your guest and is most-definitely worth it!

Breaking the base will gently remove old colors, color build-up or build-up from products, iron, copper, calcium, silicones, etc.

It’s an ideal, one-step procedure for fast and efficient “mild” color adjustments. In most cases, hair will need no further color deposit or toning.

Breaking the base is a must prior to a color correction or when color grabs during a color service or toning. (Lifts 1 to 2 levels.)

MIX: • 1 part CHI Blondest Blonde Lightener (Crème or Powder) or CHI Infra High Lift Cream Color (Blondes only - CB, GB, or BB)• 1 part 10 or 20 volume CHI Generator• 1 part CHI Infra Shampoo

APPLY:• Wearing gloves, wet hair thoroughly with warm water; apply mixture at the shampoo bowl• Stay 1/8 inch off the scalp• Gently massage the mixture into the hair (not the scalp) for 1-5 minutes• Check the lifting action constantly• Repeat up to 3 times if necessary • Rinse well and shampoo with CHI Infra Shampoo• Rinse, towel dry after shampooing and apply CHI Color Lock Treatment for five minutes• Follow up with a few drops of CHI Silk Infusion

There are many ways to elevate your service and your male guest’s style I.Q. Here are some tips from the pros:

Practice portion control: It’s important to use grooming products, but start slow. If the hair doesn’t move within 10 or 15 minutes after it’s dry you are using too much product, unless you are going for a stiff, gelled look. Demonstrate the correct amount. Put it in his hands so he can see precisely how much to apply.

Brows need to look sharp: Proper brow grooming is an essential part of any men’s service. Ask your guests to refrain from using brow clippers. These tools take the hair too short. Discourage them from letting their wives or girlfriends shape their brows because they tend to create a shape that is more femi-nine. You should simply comb the brows in the natural growth direction and trim longer ends to maintain a natural, masculine shape. Unibrow? Offer to clean it up for him and tell him how sharp it will look.

Stay High and Dry: If a guest has thinning hair, stick to dry finishing products. Wet products (thick gels and pomades) tend to separate strands and reveal too much scalp.

Avoid Trunk Neck: If a guy has a large, thick neck, a solid blunt nape line will accentuate the girth. Use a #1 guard to etch in a line that follows and blends the shape of his natural hairline.

Now Ear This: Don’t remove the cape until you have trimmed those little ear and nose sprouts. But ask first before attacking those personal areas without warning.

Towel Dry, Then Apply: To make sure your gels, creams and lotions work at full strength, towel or rough dry his hair before applying.

Blend That Gray: Suggest a color glaze to blend his gray. It can make thinner hair look thicker too! No obvious root line either – they can get a refresh with each haircut visit.

Hair Rules for Male Guests

When working with porous blonde hair, preparing the hair is just as important as your color formula!

• Lightly mist the hair with Keratin Mist and leave it in.• If hair is extremely porous, apply CHI Silk Infusion, comb it

through and dry the hair. Next, apply CHI Keratin Mist and dry it completely before applying color. Hair will look oily and coated.

Tint Back Example:Guest is a level 10. The desired level and tone is a 6RR.

Mix:• 1 part 6N, 6W or 6G, 2 parts 6RR with equal parts 10 Volume

CHI Generator (strand test for a true result). Always use the same level N, W or G series as the level Red you are adding it to for correct depth.

Procedure:• Prepare the hair to equalize porosity as stated above.• Apply color generously to porous and lightened ends.• If two formulas are used, apply formula for new growth first.• Process without heat for 30 to 45 minutes.

PRO TIP:Mix equal parts CHI Ionic Crème Color with CHI Shine Shades. It creates a great consistency with fluid coverage. You’ll be less likely to have dull areas if you do this and use CHI Silk Infusion prior.

Additives:Can be up to 10% of your formula.• Desired result is either CG or C: use Orange Color Additives.• Desired result is either RR or RV: use Red Color Additives.

Home Maintenance:This type of hair fades fast and home care is super important to keep the color vibrant. Include the price of the CHI Ionic Color Illuminate Conditioner when quoting for this service. Any of the CHI Shampoos are sulfate-free and should be part of the home care package, too.

When Color Gets On Your Guests’ Skin

Prevent it from happening:

• CHI Color should be applied 1/8th of an inch away from the scalp - this includes the hairline.

• CHI Deep Brilliance Soothe & Protect Hair & Scalp Protective Cream contains a unique blend of essential oils, botanicals, herbs and vitamins. Apply it around the hairline to add a soothing barrier between skin and color.

But when it does happen, here’s how to remove it:

• Before you emulsify the color, take a damp towel and add a little CHI Infra Shampoo. Use the towel to wipe the color off of your guests’ forehead.

• Remember that color removes color. As you emulsify the color, use it to help remove color from your guests’ forehead.

• CHI Keratin Mist is magical. As soon as you notice color on your guest’s skin, take a clean, dry towel or cotton and spray it with CHI Keratin Mist. Lightly rub affected skin with the towel or cot-ton to remove color.

Making Time to Recharge Your Battery

The busy holiday season is here! Long days at the salon getting everyone holiday-ready can leave us feeling exhausted. As stylists, we give so much of ourselves to our guests and then run home and do the same for our families. Before we realize it, we could find that our battery is drained.

When our battery is low or empty, we tend to have less energy, we drag our feet, complain more, feel resentful and criticize ourselves and others, all of which can drain the people around us that we’re trying to benefit.

But there’s hope! By regularly practicing a little self-care, we can charge our battery. Here are a few ways to reboot:

• Sit outside in the sun and read a book or do a crossword puzzle.

• Take a bubble bath. Light a candle, put on your favorite music, drink your favorite beverage and try to forget about the day.

• Ask a friend to make dinner with you, or for you!• Try a yoga class or take a walk around your neighborhood.• Go to the movies.• Go to the beach or a park.• Stay in your pj’s all day and watch holiday movies.• Do something you loved to do as a kid (color in a coloring book, dance around the house, run

through the sprinkler, blow bubbles, etc...)• Have a friends night or a date night.• Turn off your phone for an hour.• Allow others to help you.• Keep a journal. Note what you’re grateful for. Note what activities, moments, people and things

give you energy and refresh you.

There are endless ways to recharge your battery. The key is finding what works for you personally, then making time to experience it. Whatever it is for you, try every day to do something you enjoy, even if it’s only for 30 minutes. Or 15 minutes... even just five minutes can give you the refreshing boost you need!
