MESSAGE FROM
DIRECTOROF
INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING EXPO 2016
The motivation for initiating i-STEEx is to provide an avenue for youth to demonstrate their creativity and hands-on skills to make their design concept work. A unique aspect of i-STEEx is the emphasis on the process of coming up with an innovation based on their knowledge in science, in which they are required to explain the mechanism of their innovation and/or theory applied for optimising their design using theory in physics or chemistry. It is hoped that their journey to innovate practical solutions will cultivate their passion in science and hands-on skill to make science work, as the saying goes, seeing is believing.
Another driving factor for i-STEEx is the recognition and support provided by the professional bodies namely the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), as well as Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Sarawak (JPNS) and the Malaysian Research and Innovation Society (MyRIS), being the co-organisers. In addition, the sponsorship by Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) also underlines the relevance of this expo to their commitment to achieve 60 % of the total number of students pursuing the STEM-related fields.
My aspiration for i-STEEx is to become among the avenues to discover academic and vocational talents in STEM-related field among youth and assist the progressive development of their innovation through a system (state, national and international level innovation competitions) recognised by various stakeholders especially governing bodies, professional bodies, employers, schools and public. With this, I hope for more active involvement, recognition and support by local governing bodies such as the Ministry of Education to ensure the continuity such event in effort to create awareness among public on the potential of STEM in Malaysia in the long-term.
I would like to congratulate and thank my team members: Prof Dr Ng Chee Khoon, Dr Tay Kai Meng and Dr Annie Joseph, the UNIMAS-STEM EnCon 2016 committee and crew, judges, sponsors, as well as the Faculty of Engineering and UNIMAS for their cooperation and immense support to make this expo a success.
The International Science, Technology and Engineering Expo (i-STEEx) is held in conjunction with the UNIMAS-STEM Engineering Conference (EnCon) 2016, to encourage the involvement of youth in STEM related activities and foster their interest in science and technology. i-STEEx 2016 comprises the Open and School Categories themed “Resilient Technology for Development” and “Sustainability through Recycling Innovations”, respectively, both to showcase the latest research and development in universities and to inspire youth to pursue the field of science and technology.

OS010 Ultrasonic Integrated Laser Soldering (UiLS) Machine Dr. Farazila Yusof, Mohamad Badrol Hisyam, Lai Kwong Yih, Tan Ai Ting
Universiti Malaya
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Laser soldering have been extensively studied for the past decades with its demand in industrial keep growing
due to the decreasing size of electronic components that is very sensitive to
soldering heat. The capability of laser soldering methods to direct heat
accurately and precisely on a small target reduced the thermal stress around
the components. The other method, ultrasonic soldering utilize vibration to
propagate through the substrate and filler metal. Hybrid soldering method
is developed with combination of these two methods in order to increase
the soldering performance and joint strength. In-house laser source was
developed to maximize customization of laser parameters to match with ultrasonic
performance.

OS001
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In a period where petroluem source is depleting, an alternative source of lubricant shall be explored. In addition to the environmental adverse effect that commercial petroleum based lubricant imposed, the search for an alternative is deemed necessary. This study introduces palm oil which is renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic as parent base oil and a substitute lubricant to commercially available petroleum based lubricant. The addition of Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate at different concentrations was investigated to observe the improvement of oxidative stability and tribological properties of the parent base oil. From the studyit can be concluded that at the right concentration of ZDDP, palm oil could exhibit a more superior tribological properties compared to the commerically available petroleum based lubricant.

OS003
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Concentration of high iron and manganese in groundwater can be removed by a process which combines oxidation and filtration. This study focused on the effectiveness of the cascade aerator and the size of the limestone filter media to remove iron and manganese from groundwater. Water samples used for this study were collected from orphanage home, Rumah Nur Kasih, Taiping. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has provided a tube well of 15 m depth and 150 mm diameter for the orphanage home. However, the water cannot be used for domestic consumption due to high amount of iron and manganese at 6.47 and 1.9 mg/l which exceeded the drinking water standard of 0.3 and 0.1 mg/l respectively. Using laboratory physical model, the study has shown that the removals of iron and manganese have achieved 0.17 and 0.6 mg/l respectively. Thus, the results from this study which utilize cascade aerator and limestone roughing filter could be implemented on site for the community to use the ground water for domestic purposes.

OS004 Vision-Based Athlete Motion Analysis and Feedback System
Daniel Tan Yong Wen, Ting Huong Yong, Simon Lau Boung Yew University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In sport sciences, a common method for analysing performance based on body motion is to film athletes and annotate the footage offline manually using a video digitisation system. It is a popular method in many sports but requires expertise from the system operator to anotate the videos to highlight important components of the video contents. An alternative way is to ise a motion tracking system in order to extract a skeleton model of the athlete automatically using physical body markers and perform manual analysis later in offline mode. The proposed system would be able to compare and quantitatively analyse the motion that is performed in an automated manner using Microsoft Kinect sensor. The analysis includes measurement of overall difference between refernce and sample athlete motion, joints’ orientations, joints’ distance relative to spine joint and region of movements.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Many robbery crime case have been reported especially agaist 24-hour stores, banks and private properties although the premises are equipped with CCTVs. The latest statistics shows a decreasing trend, but the amount of cases are still worrying (more than 10,000 cases per year reported). Many premises do not have adequate security therefore if a robbery haappens, the related victims do not call the police immediately during the crime incident is taking place instead, in most cases the victims only wait until the crime incident has passed before contacting the police. By this time, it is all too late for the police to take necessary actions.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Observing a skater and a jogger moving together, we discovered that the skater can move faster than the jogger. This shows that wheels can help move objects better. Our school is always organizing events in the school hall and the students often have to cart many chairs from the classes to the school hall. They often moaned that it is tiring and time consuming to move the chairs from one place to another with just mere human strength. To solve this problem, we invented the magic rollers using used cans and wheels to make the moving of the chairs easier, faster and more efficient. Although this invention is a success, the students still faced minor glitches. The students think that it still takes a lot of effort and time to attach the legs of the chairs into the magic rollers. Moreover, it is tedious having to lug around 4 magic rollers. We found out that it is better if we make the magic rollers into a 4-in-1 project. This eco-friendly product can help move heavy objects faster.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We noticed the dust spreading around in class. We wish to find ways to in-vent things using recyclable materials and to prepare the students and school citizens towards the application of HOTS. We wish to ease the work of the students on duty for cleaning the dusters. We notice that a closed sharpener can help to keep pencil shavings in the lower compartments after the pencils are sharpened, thus we design a box with wire gauze in it.The wire gauze is used to remove the dust from dusters. The wire gauze is a hard material that creates a bigger impulsive force than a soft material. This is because the time of impact between the duster and the wire gauze is longer. The lower com-partment of the box allows the chalk dust to be easily disposed. The “ Miracle Dust Cleaner” protects the students who are allergic to dust and creates a dust-free study environment. To use the box, one should put a duster in it and close it with a cover. Then, shake the box to allow the chalk dust to be removed.

Years after years, our wardrobe are full with unwanted or old cloths. The cloths are still in good conditions but they are also too old to be donated. The fabric of the cloths especially made of cotton are very good for air flow. So, we decided to bring the old cloths together and turn them into our Recyling Project: Green Pot. Any container can be used to be a pot. But, fabric pot will be the best. We sew the unwanted cloth into a pocket which can hold soil for plantation. Fabric pot can air prunes our plants’ roots. Fabric is also a superb drainage for the water logging in soils. Upon all, fabric pot cools the plants root better than plastic container. We can easily hang our Green Pot on the walls and save the space for small scale planting.
