A litter picking group called Cleaner Chilton is working to reduce the amount of litter in and around the village with a spring litter pick.
Volunteers, members of the Ladder Centre in Fer-ryhill and staff from the council’s Civic Pride team will clean the wooded area at the rear of Aldwin Close
on Saturday 11th March at 10am for two hours. This coincides with Litter-Free Durham’s Big Spring Clean taking place at other locations all across the county and in Darlington. Cllr Brian Stephens, port-folio holder for Neighbour-hoods and Local Services said: “It’s great to see volunteers within our local community coming together with the aim of making Chilton a cleaner, litter-free place to live.”Anybody can take part by meeting at Chilton Town Council at 9.45am on Saturday 11th March.Children are also welcome but any under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Last year Cleaner Chilton collected 40 bags of litter from the Cemetery Road area alone. Tenlands Care Centre in Ferryhill are hoping to become the centre of the local community through regular coffee mornings.A spokesperson for the home said, “The reason for this is we believe that there are older people throughout Ferryhill that spend each day alone, with no interaction with others, and some don’t probably speak to anyone for weeks! Can you imagine how this must feel? “We want to take action
by playing a vital role and stamping out loneliness. We want older people to come together, get to know each other and meet new people, share stories and enjoy our warm envi-ronment.“So the last Thursday of each month we are inviting our local com-munity to attend. “No one has to be alone, come along and get to know others. Tea, coffee and cakes will be avail-able.”

A free coffee morning for residents of Ferryhill and Ferryhill Station will take place bi-weekly at Fer-ryhill Station Royal British Legion.The event, run by Margaret Walton - secretary of the Club and Residents’ Asso-
ciation Treasurer, will take place between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Tuesday 7th March, and then every fortnight thereafter. Margaret commented, “Anyone who just wants a chat and a game of bingo will be very welcome.”

Durham and Cleveland Police are once again on the lookout, with a zero tolerance approach, for motorists who are using their mobile phones while driving.
Zero tolerance from police on lookout for texting drivers
Police warn of ‘a zero tolerance approach’ when it comes to new mobile phone laws. Cleveland and Durham’s Specialist Operations Unit will be taking part in a nationally co-ordinated week-long operation to enforce new penalties for using a mobile phone while driving.The enforcement campaign runs from Wednesday March 1st until Tuesday March 7th.The campaign, which is co-ordinated by the NPCC (National Police Chief’s Council), and is supported by THINK! Road Safety will see targeted operations, as well as awareness raising of the new penalties for this offence which have come into force in recent days. Drivers caught using their mobiles will now be subject to a £200 fine and six points on their licence. The new legislation could have a huge effect on new drivers in their probation-ary period. The probation-ary period for someone who has just passed their driving test is two years. In this time if a new driver receives six points their licence will be revoked.This is the second week of action this year. During a week long campaign, which began on Monday 23rd January, a total of 133 mo-torists were apprehended for using their mobile phones whilst driving; 61 of those in Cleveland and
72 in County Durham and Darlington.It is hoped the new legisla-tion will deter drivers from using any kind of electronic device at the wheel which will distract them from driving. Research has found that being distracted by a phone while driving, regardless of whether it is being used to make calls, messages or going online can make a driver up to 25 times more likely to be involved in a collision. Inspector Harry Simpson from the CDSOU, said any drivers taking the risk of using a phone, or being otherwise seriously dis-tracted while at the wheel could expect no second chances.“We will have a number of officers dedicated to this campaign across the week, using unmarked as well as marked police cars. Over the years there have been plenty of educational campaigns so no-one can claim to be unaware this is against the law and
also incredibly dangerous. Despite this education and media interest over 130 people were caught using their mobile phones last month in a week long campaign.”“There are clearly some people who feel the law doesn’t apply to them. But over the next week they will discover our officers are making this offence a priority and that we have a zero-tolerance approach.“It is one of the most common complaints we receive. To remove the temptation to check your phone whilst driving turn it on silent and put it in the glovebox. Out of sight and out of mind.“Using a phone whilst driving could cost you your licence. Using a phone whilst driving and injuring or killing someone will cost your freedom as well as your licence. Death by dangerous driving carries a sentence of up to 14 years in prison. When you are released you will still have to live with yourself”.

Take part in Big Spring Clean litter-pick campaign
Communities and local vol-unteers are gearing up for the tenth anniversary of the ‘Big Spring Clean’ litter-picking campaign. LitterFree Durham, in partnership with Durham County Council and Dar-lington Borough Council, is hoping to once again give the region a facelift ahead of the summer months. The campaign brings communities together to tidy-up, clean-up and green-up their villages or towns, and so far thousands of people have pulled-up their sleeves and made a difference.This year, the Big Spring Clean campaign will run from Monday, 27 February to Sunday, 16 April and people are urged to sign up and organise a litter pick in their village, town or city in County Durham and Darlington.Gerald Lee, Chair of Lit-terFree Durham, said: “The Big Spring Clean campaign represents a fantastic op-
portunity for people to really make a difference in their community. “Last year’s campaign saw 187 litter picks take place in the region, and this year we’re hoping to top that. “Whether you’ve volun-teered with us before or are new to it, we can provide everything you need to get started and even organise a litter pick of your own.”The campaign contributes towards County Durham’s priority of making the county ‘altogether greener’.Last year’s campaign in County Durham and Dar-lington saw 2,581 people contributing 4,982 volun-teer hours, to collect a total of 2,478 bags of litter.In addition, the Environ-ment Agency used special-ist equipment to remove a tree and other debris, weighing 2.5 tonnes, from the River Gaunless in Bishop Auckland and vol-unteers from the Skill Mill and the council’s Clean and
Green and Civic Pride team removed 30 bags of rubbish from the riverbanksIan Hoult, neighbourhood protection manager at Durham County Council, said: “So far we’ve been delighted with LitterFree-Durham’s annual Big Spring Clean event, but every year we aim to do better than the year before.“That’s why this year we’re urging more and more people to sign up and really make a difference to their communities.”The Big Spring Clean litter pick campaign takes place between 27th February and 16th April. Dear Editor,
On 20th February, DIDO entertained itself after a quiz compiled by
two clever ladies. The Jolly Girls sang us a medley of lovely songs, then a
cowboy with a big moustache and an Indian squaw with big assets, sang
the ‘Indian Love Call’. Three ladies showed us how to dance ‘Balling the
Jack’. A short but sweet poem was recited by one lady and a longer one
complete with Geordie accent by another.
Two ladies then sang ‘My Toot Toot’ in their very colourful TuTus. Two
gentlemen were next and sang us love songs and handed out red roses
to some lucky ladies.
The Navy came to DIDO too, the Captain and his not so ordinary sea
men ‘ladies’ sang sailing songs with some brilliant synchronised actions.
A lady told a true story about her family and some German prisoners
of war, and another read a collection of funny quotes and phrases. ‘I, yi
yi yi , I like you very much’ was then performed by ‘Carmen Miranda’
and her two friends playing maracas.
The penultimate act was a comedy duo, one smart, small lady and one
tall plain lady did a funny sketch. Finally, four beautifully dressed ladies
all in mink stoles led us in a sing-along.
The acts, atmosphere and audience were wonderful. Thank you to all
who took part. Special thanks to musical director Chris and Nancy for
putting the show together.
We can’t wait for February 15th 2008. Fab!!!

The Glitz and Glam Charity Ball raised a whopping £1,806, which has been split equally between Kyran Richmond Fundraising and Chilton Scouts Group. Claire Foster and Michaela Peacock, who oprganised the fundraining event released a joint statement in which they expressed their gratitude to all who took part: “We would like to thank everyone who donated raffle prizes, bought tickets, donated money and came to the

On Monday 20th February officers from Ferryhill Police executed a warrant at a property in West
Cornforth following infor-mation from the commu-nity. Inside there was a large
cannabis grow.The occupiers are assist-ing officers with their in-vestigation.

A plea has been issued to all dog walkers, asking them to keep dogs on leads in the countryside in order to cut down the number of sheep attacks. According to research by SheepWatch UK around 15,000 sheep were killed by loose dogs in 2016 - ten times more than previ-ously thought. This increase is a worrying statistic that impacts on farmers’ livelihoods and could easily be prevented if dog walkers exercised more care. At this time of year ewes are heavily pregnant which raises additional concerns of pregnancy termination
due to aggravation by dogs and attacks on vulnerable lambs. In the past letting dogs off leads has proved fatal to sheep, lambs and other animals being farmed but it has also led to 49 dogs being destroyed last year, due to the vicious nature of the attacks. As a result, County Durham Local Access Forum is asking dog owners to keep their animals on leads when enjoying the network of paths provided for their enjoyment.

Mainsforth Cricket Club’s indoor cricket nets are due to start on Wednesday 8th March from 6.30pm until 8pm. The sessions will take place at Ferryhill Hub with the cost being £3 per head per session. The nets are for the club’s under 15s, u18s and senior sides. Anyone wanting more in-formation should contact Nigel Milner on 07739 825731. The club’s Sportsmen’s Evening takes place on Friday 10th March from 7pm at the pavilion.Guest speaker is former Sunderland player and radio pundit, Gary Bennett and the evening will be compered by top comedian

On Saturday 18th March the club are holding a charity night at the pavilion in aid of Cancer Research and Macmillan in memory of club stalwart Tom Stoddart. The evening will include a quiz, disco, karaoke and a raffle will be held. Food will be available to purchase. Fiftieth anniversary of Ferryhill Youth Club double winners
We are grateful to Marie Jameson for sending us the following information on the 50th anniversary of Ferryhill Youth Club’s double-winning season. Marie takes up the story:Fifty years ago in April saw the end of the 1966/67 football season. The previous season, Fer-ryhill Youth Club finished bottom of the Auckland District Junior league, not winning any games. However, Frank Hanratty persuaded the team to
stick together for the fol-lowing season, and with the help of Jim McKenna, Frank saw his losing team become a winning team, losing only one of their league games all season. They also won the Lady Eden Hospital Cup after a 3-2 win over West Auckland Juniors at the Brewery Field, Spen-nymoor (the photo above was taken before the cup final). This made it a league and cup double for the youth
club, which was run by Vera Button and Frank at the Dean Bank Community Centre and catered for the local youths as well as some from Spennymoor who made up the majority of the football team. A presentation evening was later held at the Black Bull, where the team were presented with medals for their achievement along with Frank and Jim for all the work they had put in for the youth club and the team.
