GREEN-minded renters are in luck.Landlords have been given extraincentives to install ceiling insulation.
The Federal Government hasincreased the insulation rebate forrented properties from $1000 to $1600,which fully covers the cost for all but thebiggest houses.
This brings rented properties into linewith privately-owned homes. Both noware eligible for the full $1600 rebate.
The program aims to cut electricityuse and greenhouse gas emissions.
Insulation is a great solution forcomfort at home, reducing the insidetemperature by 8 to 10 per cent.
Better still, it can reduce energyconsumption by up to 30 per cent andsave householders up to $200 a year ontheir heating and cooling bills.
With households forced to find anextra $1000 for additional StateGovernment fees and charges in 2009-2010, any chance to save money onhousehold bills would be welcomed bymany families.
Senator Mark Arbib, MinisterAssisting the Prime Minister on
Government Service Delivery, said theseparate, lower rebate for rentalproperties had been scrapped becausefew property investors were taking it up.
“I don’t think it’s a secret that gettinglandlords and tenants to co-operate tomake rental properties more energyefficient is an extremely difficult andwidely recognised challenge,” SenatorArbib said.
The rental ceiling insulation rebateinitiative is part of a $4 billion plan by theFederal Government to greenresidential housing.
Three rebate packages are available,including the insulation program, thesolar hot water rebate and the lowemission assistance plan for renters.
