A NEW not-for-profit organisation willbe established to encourage Australiansbuilding new homes to comply with designstandards to make homes more accessible.

The National Dialogue on UniversalHousing Design, a group bringing togethergovernment, the residential buildingindustry and the community sector, metlast week to progress the Livable HousingDesign guidelines.

Universal housing design meansdesigning Australian homes to meet thechanging needs of home occupants acrosstheir lifetime, including people with adisability and seniors.

Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilitiesand Carers Jan McLucas said a new not-

for-profit organisation, Livable HousingAustralia, would be established.

“Livable Housing Australia will promotegreater understanding of the value ofuniversal housing design within thecommunity and promote UniversalHousing Design practices throughout the

residential building andproperty industry,”Senator McLucas said.

“Livable housingdesign aims to makehomes easier and saferto use – for seniors,people with temporaryinjuries, and familieswith young childrenand people with adisability.

“It will also addvalue to homes andmake them easier tosell.

“There are returnsfor both homeowners and the broadercommunity.”

The voluntary guidelines are intendedto apply to all new homes, helping builders ensure homes are prepared forthe changing needs of residents andvisitors. ■
