‘I love my home because it gives me independence’

Claire, West Sussex

Would you like to live as independently as you can? Would you choose to live with support, with people like yourself, under the same roof?

At Livability, we can offer you a great place to live. It’s your life and you should be able to live it how you want. So at Livability, we will listen to you and make sure your choices are a top priority.

We offer different kinds of residential care and different living arrangements. Some of our homes are for just a few people. Others have space for 20 or more.

The people who live at Livability are all different. Some people need support with everything. Others need some support, sometimes. We will work with you to agree what support you need and how we should provide it.

living at a Livability home? What’s it like,

Your accommodationHaving your own space is important to everyone. At some of our homes, residents have their own flatlets. These have a kitchen area and ensuite facilities.

Some homes have technology that lets you control most things from your wheelchair or bed. At all our homes, residents have their own personalised bedroom.

You can meet up with other residents and spend time together in the lounge areas.

Where you go and what you doAll of us do best when we can do things we enjoy. Many of our residents go to college or a day centre. Some go to work.

We can support you to go shopping or to get around on public transport. Having fun is important so we make sure you get to do this too.

What you eatDo you like to cook for yourself? Or have a delicious meal served to you? Livability homes support you to have a healthy diet.

We make sure you get to choose food you enjoy. If you have a special diet, our trained staff will cater for you.

Our staffLivability residents tell us over and over again how great our staff are. The staff don’t just talk about supporting you to be as independent as possible – they make it happen.

We are proud of our staff because they are professional and enthusiastic. They will provide the best service they can for you. You can read more about our high standards on page 9.

Seeing your family and friendsWhen you live with us, you can invite friends and family into your home. Often, family members get involved in the life of the home and come along to social events. Most homes have parking space for visitors. Some have space for people to stay over.

Michael’s storyMichael is 58 and has lived at Keefield Close

for 17 years. He does not communicate

verbally so his sister Hazel told us about

life at Keefield Close:

“Michael is so happy there and so well

cared for. It’s absolutely wonderful – I

can’t praise it enough. It’s a lot to do

with the staff. They are so committed and

they really care. They believe everyone is

important. They stay for a long time too,

so there is continuity.

“My father and I can just turn up to visit

Michael and we always get a lovely

welcome. It’s always beautifully clean and

tidy, and smells nice too! Their facilities are

wonderful. We never have to worry about

how Michael is being cared for. They always

seem to know if he’s poorly and they deal

with everything so well.”

Michael’s father George added: “I have

more than 30 years’ experience of Michael

in care, and Keefield Close is incomparably

better than anything before.”

‘It’s absolutely wonderful – I can’t praise it enough’

‘We are learning to be independent here’

Beth’s storyBeth is 31 and has lived at Talbot Manor

for 12 years. She says:

“I love living at Talbot Manor for lots of

reasons, but I think the main thing is that

all my friends are here and that makes me

feel secure. The other thing I really like is

the staff because they’re polite and helpful

to all of us, if you need them. They support

us if we want to try new things and we are

learning to be independent here.

“I go to a day centre five days a week

with my friends Nicky and Matt. It’s a good

centre, and we do things like aerobics

and trips. We’re also doing our National

Proficiency Test Certificate qualification.

My fiancé John lives in Sherborne so I

mainly get to see him at the weekend.

Every other weekend I go and see my

family, who live on a farm near Dorchester.

“I went away for a week this summer with

my friend Nicky, to a holiday centre in

Southampton. We’ve been friends since

school and we had a fantastic time.”
