A TRUE FISHING STORY

My husband loved to fish. He had an older

brother, Art, who lived in Tillamook, Oregon.

When the fish were in the Tillamook rivers, Art

would call my husband. Harold would get up

early, hook his boat to his pickup, and off he

would go. It seems like he would come home

with a fish or two every time.

Every spring we would go to Howards Prairie

to fish for rainbow trout. It is located out of

Ashland, Oregon. A beautiful place up in the

mountains. Harold caught his share of fish.

Harold had a stroke and lost the use of the left

side of his body. That was the end of his fishing

days. When he came home from the hospital

and rehab he would be in bed for the night. He

wanted to get back up. After several sessions of

getting up and down because he could not sit up

on his own, I got tired of helping him get up and

then putting him back to bed. I said, “Let’s

pretend we are at Howards Prairie and we will

try to do some fishing.” Also, be sure and watch

for the deer and baldheaded eagles around the

lake. The eagles would be busy building nest. I

said, “I’m tired so I will take a nap, Harold, you

catch the fish today.” After 10 minutes Harold

called out, “FISH ON.” Never had any up and

down sessions after that.

At his funeral, our minister said, “Harold was

probably fishing and had his limit for the day.”
