RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Anita McCroskie Anita Baker was born in Gilbert, Arkansas in 1917, and
is the oldest child of four. At eleven years old her
Mother passed away and her family later moved to
Missouri. Anita graduated from high school in
Mansfield, Missouri. She always loved school, and her
favorite subject was math.
In 1944 Anita met and married James Mc Croskie in
Kansas City, Missouri. While dating they enjoyed
dancing to the music of the Big Band Era, and live
music. They had one son, many grandchildren, and
nieces and nephews. Anita’s career was mostly that of a
seamstress working in the garment district in downtown
Kansas City and again in Los Angeles, California.
She and James spent many years together; involved in
politics, playing cards, and traveling across the country
visiting relatives throughout the United States. Anita
(Nana) was a good cook and you could always count on
a wonderful home cooked dinner at their home every
Sunday. She loved teaching Sunday school and being
active in her church, where she was always loved and
appreciated.
After James’s death in 1991 Anita moved to Oregon to
live with her sister and family. Her hobbies were
gardening, reading, and writing letters to family and
friends. She was an excellent seamstress and made
many quilts.
Anita moved to Cornell Estates May of 2019 and enjoys
her new studio apartment, and making new friends.

A TRUE FISHING STORY
My husband loved to fish. He had an older
brother, Art, who lived in Tillamook, Oregon.
When the fish were in the Tillamook rivers, Art
would call my husband. Harold would get up
early, hook his boat to his pickup, and off he
would go. It seems like he would come home
with a fish or two every time.
Every spring we would go to Howards Prairie
to fish for rainbow trout. It is located out of
Ashland, Oregon. A beautiful place up in the
mountains. Harold caught his share of fish.
Harold had a stroke and lost the use of the left
side of his body. That was the end of his fishing
days. When he came home from the hospital
and rehab he would be in bed for the night. He
wanted to get back up. After several sessions of
getting up and down because he could not sit up
on his own, I got tired of helping him get up and
then putting him back to bed. I said, “Let’s
pretend we are at Howards Prairie and we will
try to do some fishing.” Also, be sure and watch
for the deer and baldheaded eagles around the
lake. The eagles would be busy building nest. I
said, “I’m tired so I will take a nap, Harold, you
catch the fish today.” After 10 minutes Harold
called out, “FISH ON.” Never had any up and
down sessions after that.
At his funeral, our minister said, “Harold was
probably fishing and had his limit for the day.”
