As part of the contract, Waste Management will distribute new 95-gallon trash and 65 gallon recycling carts to all residential customers in Bristol Township at no charge. The containers will be easy to roll since they will have large wheels and a handle. As part of the new program, WM will use its automated collection trucks to mechanically collect the trash and recycling from the carts. Carts must be placed in the street at least three feet apart with the wheels toward the curb and the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street. They must also be at least four feet from any obstacles including cars, trees, mailboxes and utility poles. The Township will save $1,264,232 alone during the first year of the contract and a total of $5,119,627 over a five-year period compared to the expiring contract with Republic Services. Council also approved a reduction in fees for residential trash service amounting to $317 annually per household or $20 less than the $337 residents were paying under the expiring agreement with Republic Services. Since customers will transition from 20 gallon to 65-gallon recycling carts, the Township expects a significant increase in the amount its citizens recycle and subsequently a sharp decrease in how much trash is thrown away. As a result, trash collection will be reduced from twice a week to once a week service. Residents should be able to adjust to the new once a week service since the average household in Bristol Township throws out 47 lbs. of trash a week and the new 95 gallon trash container can easily hold 200 lbs. of trash. The new residential service with Waste Management will begin on January 1, 2014 and ALL residents will receive their 95-gallon green waste and 65-gallon blue recycling carts by the end of January. It is very likely that your pickup day will change-Residents will soon receive a flyer letting them know their new pickup day each week. Residents are also urged to visit the Township’s website at http://www.bristoltownship.org or the Township’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BristolTownshipPA for updates.
