No: 30 14 th October, 2014 PRINCIPAL’S NOTES Lateness It is becoming more of an issue each morning, as children arrive at school anywhere between 9.05am and 10.45am. Not only is it bad manners and embarrassing for the children, it is also frustrating for teachers who endeavour to begin their core teaching as soon after nine o’clock as possible. A number of children miss almost all of their literacy lessons three or four days each week; and we wonder why that child is falling behind! There is also a concern about accurately recording these late arrivals for reporting to the Department. SO beginning tomorrow; The gates will be closed at 9.05 SHARP! If you can’t get your child to school before then, they will need to enter through the front door, sign in as “late” and take a Late Slip to their teacher. That way, the recording of arrival times will be accurate. It would be really terrific if families who have difficulty with our start times could change their morning routines just a little, so a nine o’clock start can be a real possibility. School Update Our school is growing; the prediction of over 300 students in the new year is quite conservative. Clearly, we need more classrooms, and it has been confirmed that we will receive two portable buildings between now and the beginning of the new school year. This is fantastic news; we won’t need to use the open space in the BER building for a classroom. And with a growing number of students in the junior classes, we should be able to make use of our Investigations area again for the benefit of all the younger students. As many of you may be aware, the Education Maintenance Allowance will no longer be available to families. The government has added some money to the school’s budget to allow for this, however predictably, this amount does not equate totally with the monies parents could receive through the old system. A discussion will take place at our next school Council meeting regarding our Booklists in 2015. Clearly we need to collect enough from parents to operate our excellent programs, supply adequate and up to date resources and generally ensure that all children at Reservoir receive the high quality education they deserve. It was decided to continue the practice of including the costs for PIT Gym, excursions, Book Week incursions and Life Education in our booklists. Feedback from parents has supported this as the best practice; a better alternative to asking for money spasmodically throughout the year. We will prepare our booklists soon to cover all expenses for each year level. There will be a decision made about a reduction for parents who are current holders of a Health Care Card. The school office should be able to administer this as they have done so in the past to comply with the government’s EMA system. Classes in 2015 I realise it is very early, but already we are talking about class structure for 2015, and as always I ask for your input. Your child’s welfare is one of our most important considerations when forming new classes each year. We seek their input, but you may also have information we should be aware of when grouping students. If you have requests regarding the placement of your child in a class next year, I do ask that you come and talk with me as soon as possible. It would appear that the best option is as follows: 3 X Prep classes 4 X Year 1 / 2 classes 3 X Year 3 / 4 classes 3 X Years 5 / 6 classes Currently we have twelve classes; we have planned for one more in 2015.This plan is based on our current enrolments as well as our new Preps. HOWEVER, if you are already aware (or thinking) that you may be leaving the school, PLEASE let us know. It is really important that we have accurate numbers at each year level. Who knows, if we receive many more enrolments; we may have to form yet another class!

TERM 4 ART

We have begun a very exciting new term in the art room. The grade 1 and 2 children are learning about the artist Georges Seurat. He was a French artist who used the technique of Pointillism to paint his pieces. Ask your children who Georges Seurat was and what Pointillism is. We have also discussed how landscape pictures are made up of background, middleground and foreground and the sizes of things we see that are far away and close to us.

The children then drew their own landscapes and are using the technique of Pointillism to create their art pieces. Here are some photos taken in the art room during our creative process.

The grade 3 and 4 children are learning about the artist Claude Monet who was an impressionist painter. Discuss with your children what their knowledge of Claude Monet and Impressionism is. As a part of this unit we have looked at one of Monet’s paintings The Regatta at

Argentuil. We have discussed Monet’s techniques and are applying this to a piece of art we are creating using his painting as inspiration. Here are some photos of the students at work.

We hope to have these exhibited around the school shortly. Luisa Macheda
