Central Peru 24 November to 13 December 2019

Introduction The trip was organized by me, Roger Ahlman, Swedish but long-term resident in Ecuador and partly in Peru. The planning was done together with Julio Benites, who lives in Lima and has driven birders along this (and other) route many times over almost 20 years. All of the participants were from Sweden and have travelled with me before in both Peru and Ecuador and some of them are big listers having seen between 7000-8000 species, so we obviously concentrated in finding the endemics and specialities for central Peru. Almost inevitable with so many targets, there will be the odd bird that simply wont show and we had a couple of them. Overall we recorded 538 species with only 17 being heard-only. Bird-of-the-trip was Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager. The mammal section at the end was compiled by Anita Ericsson who kept track of them and also did some post-trip research to identify some. 24 November Roger met the group at Lima airport and it started with hazzle immediately! Anders didn’t have the requiered six months in his passport valid and was thus not allowed to enter the country! He was simply put on the next flight back to Sweden where he issued a new passport and bought a new ticket to catch up with us a few days later. His wife Anna was somewhat stranded and eventually we went back and picked her up before driving up to Santa Eulalia for a few hours sleep. 25 November Five am leave from Casa Peter for almost two hours drive up the dry valley. While we birded, our drivers, led by the outstanding Julio Benites, preparred a fantastic breakfast in the field with fresh omelet and fruitsallad as well as coffee made at the spot. This was to be just one of many such breakfasts.... We did see some birds during the morning like Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Canyon Canastero and Bronze-tailed Comet to mention some. Unfortunately we failed to find Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch. Even worse was that we didn’t find Great Inca-Finch despite two hours searching. We would repair that miss later though. A few hours over-taking lorries and trucks on the Central Highway in the evening before coming to a nice hotel in San Mateo. 26 November Up early for about an hour drive up to the Marcopomacochas area. Cold but we were happy that the weather was good as it was very rainy last night. Diademed Sandpiper-Plover and Junin Canastero bagged before breakfast. Higher up we walked in freshly fallen snow and it was bit bizarre to see White-fronted Ground-Tyrants in this situation. At another bog we found some Dark-winged Miners and briefly also an Olivaceous Thornbill. Up at the Ticlio bog we found a nice White-bellied Cinclodes just before a heavy hail-storm put an end the the high altitude birding. Rest of the afternoon was transport to Concepcion for the night. Lars and Anita went out after dinner and heard Koepcke’s Screech-Owl. 27 November An hour drive took us to lake Pomacochas at about 4000 m. Cold but nice. Birding around breakfast gave some Common Miners and Gray-breasted Seed-Snipes among more widespread waterfowls. Several hours of driving on winding mountain roads through interandean valleys before reaching the higher parts of the famous Satipo road where we found a nice flock of Andean Ibises. Julio dropped us just outside a village while he and his nephew José made lunch for us. We were at a stake-out for the undescribed Millpo Tapaculo which we soon connected with and had nice looks. At lunch it started to rain so we drove on a bit and got into fog instead but immediately hit a flock which had a pair of Eye-ringed Thistletails. Happy with those we walked around another bend of the road and found our next target, Fiery-throated Metaltail. On the way down to our lodging at Apaya we enjoyed a pair of Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucans. The accommodation here is basic with outdoor toilets and no showers, but good enough for a couple of nights and it is right in the thick of the best birding along this road. 28 November Another early start for the drive up and over the pass and down into the much drier Andamarca valley. Creamy-creasted Spinetails were singing so we stopped for them before heading down a bit more for breakfast. While that was preparred we had great looks at the undescribed Mantaro Wren. We had to search a while for Black-spectacled Brush-Finch but soon found three birds that gave stunning views. Lower down we walked a side-road trawling for Mantaro Thornbird, another undescribed taxon. It took a good while before they responded but eventually we had good looks at a pair. We went down to Pucacocha for a supposed stake-out for Koepcke’s Screech-Owl but that didn’t work so we had another field-lunch here before heading back to the wet side above Apaya where we had another pair of Eye-ringed Thistletails in the fog. Birding lower down produced a Rufous-bellied Bush-Tyrant among others.

29 November Today we just drove a few kilometers up the road and walked downhill. First bird was the endemic Junin Tapaculo before a Rufous Antpitta (obscura) showed well without playback. Nice birding here in the upper subtropics with Tawny-rumped Tyrannulets, the white-crowned weskei subspecies of Marcapata Spinetail and flocks with the usual suspects at this altitude. A Sharp-tailed Streamceeper was heard and so was Chestnut Antpitta. We packed up and headed down the road making several stops racking up new trip-species on every stop. At one point we saw a few Amazonian Umbrellabirds and stopped for them enjoying great views. In the late afternoon we stopped at some former rice-fields just outside Satipo. A Merlin was a surprise found here, surely one of the most southerly records for the species. Black-billed Seed-Finch was another good bird here. Night at a hotel in Satipo. 30 November We had a few hours drive today to Villa Rica so no really useful morning birding and what was supposed to be at least some birding, was rained out. We did see several Fasciated Tiger-Herons and three Skimmers along the rio Perené. As we were at lower altitudes, all short stops we made gave some new trip-birds. After installing ourselves a the nice hotel Sol and lunch in Villa Rica, we headed up into the shade-grown coffee plantations above town. We soon found a flock that had the desired and endemic Creamy-bellied Antwren. We had two good flocks here with many species typical of the altitude. 1 December Early start for about an hour drive up to Bosque Sho’llet. Nice forest here at a bit above 2000 m. A very brief flight-view of a Black-winged Parrot was a bit frustrating but after breakfast we had better views of two birds flying by close. The whole area was full of singing Slaty Finches and small groups of Barred Parakeets were flying over all the time so bamboo was obviously seeding right now. Two Maroon-chested Ground-Doves, another species following such events, were heard singing. Along the road we also had great looks at males Masked Fruiteaters and a surprise White Hawk here at 2400 m! Rain and fog put a halt to birding in the early afternoon, so we moved down to laguna Oconal in the outskirts of Villa Rica. Very nice birding here and a major surprise straight away - a female Blue-winged Real with six small ducklings! Apparently first breeding record for South America. Not sure what is going on with the ducks here but we saw a few males in full breeding plumage which boreal migrants does not have at this time of the year. Other surprises here were Subtropical Doradito, Least Bittern and Little Ground-Tyrant. 2 December We went back to laguna Oconal in the morning as it was so nice and also sporting a brand new tower over-looking the marsh. Great views of Spotted and Blackish Rails and a pair of Brazilian Teals. Funnily, me and part of this group had the first documented record for Peru of this species exactly 10 years ago near Puerto Maldonado! The species is now established down there but remains a major rarity elsewhere in Peru. Happy with this we headed up the same road as yesterday but this time we should continue to Oxapampa for two nights. The rains yesterday had a stream turned into a waterfall across the road so we simply had to turn back and drive the longer paved road around to Oxapampa. About half-way, I spotted a track in nice-looking forest so we stopped there for some birding while the crew made lunch. Of course not much activity around midday but we did have great views of the tiny White-bellied Pygmy-Tyrant and an obliging family of Bluish-fronted Jacamars. We arrived at the very nice Ulcumano Lodge and got installed. Ulcumano is the local name for Poducarpus which is the only native coniferous tree in South America. Some afternoon birding with the owner Eduardo didn’t produce much and it started to rain in the late afternoon so our quest for the Cloud-forest Screech-Owl had to be temporarily aborted. Instead we celebrated Jonas’ 50th birthday! Anders joined the group just in time for dinner after a long drive from Lima.

3 December It rained throughout the night and into the morning so it was obviously soggy under-fot. We walked into the forest and had some brief views of Bay Antpitta. Birding was pretty slow for the rest of the day but a family of Black-streaked Puffbirds was nice. After dinner we drove a few kilometers up the road to try for the Owl but there was no response, maybe because of the fog or last nights rain, disappointing anyway. 4 December We birded our way out of the lodge connecting with a few good flocks. Rufous-winged Tyrannulet was a big surprise here well south of known range. Variegated Bristle-Tyrant was also nice in one flock. When the rain picked up, we boarded the bus for a long drive up to Junín with not much birding. Up in the highlands we saw a herd of Vicuñas. In Junín we installed ourselves in a decent but cold hotel and had a basic dinner nearby. 5 December After an early departure we came to Ondores at 6 am and met local guide Cesar who took us to a spot for Junín Crake but there was no response from that bird. We did see a Short-eared Owl while waiting though. After another great field-breakfast we headed to Pari for a boat-ride on the lake for the endangered and endemic Junín Grebe. Lots of birds on the way out with some Andean Avocets being most popular. Thousands of coots, ducks and flamingos before we started seeing some Silvery Grebes. Eventually, far out, we connected with a pair of Junín Grebes giving excellent views. Their behavior was different from the Silvery in that they didn’t move away from us, rather the opposite. We also heard them calling which was nice. Happy with this we returned to shore and made another try for the Crake, this time at least we heard them responding. After lunch we went to a spot for Black-breasted Hillstar and soon a brilliant male showed well. Happy with this we boarded and had a long drive to Huanuco. We made a stop in the late afternoon at a stake-out for Rufous-backed Inca-Finch which we saw after not too much searching. Night at the nice Hacienda Santa Cruz which would be our base for four nights. 6 December All morning birding the track just passed the Carpish tunnel. The habitat has been degraded here due to slash-and-burning to make room for Hortensia plantations. There is still forest left and almost immeditely we connected with today’s two targets, Peruvian Wren and Brown-flanked Tanager. Flocks here had stuff like Plushcap, Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant and Black-capped Tyrannulet among many others. Further on we had two brilliant Red-hooded Tanagers and a pair of Barred Fruiteaters. After a trout-lunch we tried to find a hole in the fog but it was dense all over so we headed back through the tunnel and birded a track with at least some habitat. Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant was seen along a stream and some usual flock birds. Little Ground-Tyrant was an odd bird here. A relaxing late afternoon in the lodge garden which had some Oriole Blackbirds. 7 December Another early start for the drive up to Bosque Unchog. The rain had made the road slippery and we just about made it up. Neblina Tapaculo was heard immediately and we soon saw Coppery Metaltails and a male Green-headed Hillstar before connecting with a White-chinned Thistletail. Soon we found a flock with Parduscos and Bay-vented Cotingas among others. As we decended through the forest into the tanager valley, fog started to move in. We heard a Rufous-browed Hemispingus singing and most heard Large-footed Tapaculo. Fog and drizzle was to be the theme for the rest of the day. I and Anders walked a bit futher down and had a couple of flocks with Yellow-scarfed Tanagers and some Ochraceous-breasted Flycatchers but no Golden-backed Mountain-Tanagers. At a small flock just when we were about to turn around, I was trawling with the tape and right there, next to us in some dead trees, were three absolutely stunning Golden-backed Mountain-Tanagers sitting in the fog looking at us! We could enjoy them down to only a few meters. Anders stayed with them while I ran (well....) up to get the others. Exhausted I yelled “Tanager!” Obviously loud enough as the troop

started piling down the trail. The tanagers hade moved up into the forest by the time they made it to the spot but I played the recording and the birds came back for everyone to see, a huge relieve! We now had a long walk back and drive down to the lodge. After showers bottles of rum and whiskey were commonly seen on the porch. 8 December This day didn’t turn out as planned. First a truck got stuck on the central highway delaying us about half an hour. When we made it to the Paty trail we couldn’t find the trail-head as they had recently built a new track down there further degrading the site. After some birding at the forest edge we moved back up to the Carpish trail and walked there seeing much the same birds as two days ago. When the fog got too dense, we drove downhill to try to get below the fog. At about 2000 m it did clear a bit and we made a stop and were lucky to hit a lingering flock close to the road. Ocellated Piculets, Rufous-crested Tanagers and Chestnut-backed Antshrike were seen among quite a few other birds. We moved up a bit to a track where Julio and José made lunch while we birded. The track went through a tiny strip of forest which was surprisingly birdy and we enjoyed good looks at White-cheeked Solitaire and Versicolored Barbets among others. After lunch we drove back to the lodge and did a long walk in the neighborhood seeing several Giant Hummingbirds and getting some exercise. 9 December We left early for a long travelling day to Yungay on the west side of the cordillera Blanca. Lots of traffic and road-work north of Huanuco but after crossing the Marañon river it eased a bit. We stopped at a small reservoir where Julio made lunch while we birded some scrub picking up Striated Earthcreeper and Stripe-headed Antpitta. The lake had several Giant Coots and Crested Ducks which allowed for nice views and pictures. We were supposed to bird Lake Conococha but we couldn’t even see the lake in the dense fog so we moved on to Yungay. 12 hours travelling today! 10 December An hour drive up to the Huascaran NP where we had breakfast at the visitor center. Rufous-eared Brushfinch was quickly bagged and after breakfast we taped out an Ancash Tapaculo. A bit higher up Jonas found a White-cheeked Cotinga in the top of a tree but it flew off almost immediately. We scanned the trees for a while but it didn’t materialize again. Higher up we found Plain-tailed Warbling-Finches so we decided to go over the pass to look for the Cotinga. After lunch Stefan spotted a Cotinga flying over the road but we failed to re-connect with that or others before rain and hails started. We went back to the first spot and hoped that it would show up again in the late afternoon which it didn’t. A couple of Giant Conebills showed well as did a single Plain-tailed Warbling-Finch. 11 December We started close to Yungay at Pueblo Libre in the now rather degraded cactus habitat. A pair of Pale-tailed Canasteros responded well and the desert here was surprisingly birdy with Drab Seedeaters and many Greenish Yellow-Finches and Band-tailed Sierra-Finches. After breakfast we drove on a bit to near Huaylas to look for Great inca-Finch. It was pretty dead already at 8 am but an Aplomado Falcon showed well. After an hour of fruitless search I spotted one up a scrubby slope. Eventualy all got to see a pair here and the dip from the first day was now repaired. The drive down towards the coast through the rio Santa Ana valley is most spectacular passing through no less than 38 tunnels in a complete steril environment. In one tunnel Julio and I spotted a couple of bats in the headlights so we stopped as Anita is into mammals. We walked into the tunnel and found a dense group of twelve bats looking at us. In the afternoon we arrived at Chao and checked in at hotel Marbia. As we still had a couple of hours day-light left, we went birding the scrub a bit west of town. Here we found the two targets for the site, Necklaced-less Spinetail, an undescribed form of Necklaced Spinetail but without spots on the throat and a very different sound. HBW has it as a separate species as they do with the orangey-breasted rufescent subspecies of Bran-colored Flycatcher which we also saw. We tried for Peruvian Plantcutter but no luck.

12 December We went back to the same place and nearby but still no Plantcutter in the rather degraded habitat. We found more Spinetails and Flycatchers and also heard a Dark-billed Cuckoo. Two fusca Brown-chested Martins were a big surprise here. This southern subspecies should be well south breeding now. At the last scrub-patch I played the Pacific Pygmy-Owl and soon we had a flurry of activity around us. Tumbes Tyrant and Cinereous Finch showed well. Happy with this we hit the road for a long drive south to Huacho for the night. We had some time left for birding so we went to nearby Paraiso lagoon. Tens of thousands of wetland birds here! Mostly coots, gallinules and ducks but also lots of flamingos. Great Grebes, Blackish Oystercatcher and Elegant Tern were among the new birds for the trip. 13 December As we embarked the bus at the crack of dawn we were held up by about 400 Black Skimmers on the beach just outside the hotel. An hour drive took us to the back side of Lomas de Lachay where we had to walk into the cactus habitat. A Burrowing Owl was mobbed by two Grayish Miners. At the cactus ‘forest’ we soon got response from the Cactus Canastero but they didn’t come closer but we saw them well anyway. Jonas and Anders saw a flock of Raimondi’s Yellow-Finches fly over. Back at the bus we had nice views of a female Purple-collred Woodstar before driving to the main entrance. Several Least Seed-Snipes here and three Peruvian Thick-knees. Very quiet along the trails apart from tons of Eared Doves and Rufous-collared Sparrows. Also many Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles all over the place. At the water-hole was a nice Oasis Hummingbird and a flock of Mountain Parakeets. Happy with this we headed for a nice lunch including desert before ending the tour at Pantanos de Ventanilla. Nice wetlands here with lots of birds. No less than 4 Hudsonian Godwits which is very rare here plus a bunch of trip-birds. All in all we recorded 537 species out of which only 17 were heard only.
