MAO College Which Derived from "MohammedanAnglo-Oriental College" was founded by Sir Syed AhmedKhan, the leader of Muslim renaissance in Indian

subcontinent, in 1875 at Aligarh. This later becameAligarh Muslim University in 1920.But after 1920 theAligarh Muslim University came MAOCollege(Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College) Whichknown as in Lahore “MAO College” A very Famous College of Lahore. This is the

first college of Lahore which is famous of his gambling and the bad character of some old students in mafia or jaga and many other more…..In negative sense.

There is also a big cause in the badness of MAO College

that is the UNION of MAO College which is for theRights, Welfare and about the good help of students butsome peoples taking the negative benefits from thatunion and that is the big cause which makes MAOCollege Bad in the eye of Pakistan’s Civilian or may be in

the eye of world…..? Well I can’t say more about the

union of MAO College because that union looking likesthe mafia of some place and I think that union is themafia of MAO College. Well I also discus about the unionof MAO College below.

Student Problems:

For the purpose of gathering information relating to theproblems of student in M.A.O collage we interview number of students. We metwith the student of I.com, B.com& B.S. We realize that major problems of all thestudents are same but few problems are relating with respect to the course of therelating student these problems can be cauterized in to two heads.

Common Problems Specific Problems

First we discuss about the common problems of the students which they can faceduring education career.

Common Problems:

The first major problem is theproblem of transport.

Lack of Guidance:Our students are most unguided students in the word.

When we asked the students why you are choosing such type of subjects theytold that our parents want by us that we study these subjects.So if a student cannotchoose the subjects whichhe like most then he cannotgive the good result because

they have no interest inthese subjects?

4000 students in the collage but only four buses are available for all thesestudents. According to our information almost 10% to 50% students use theirpersonal conveyance for the purpose of coming in to the collage but the restof students use local transportation so when we asking the abouttransportation problems they told us that we daily wakeup early in themorning because there is lot of transport problem in Pakistan. We spent our 1to 2 hours in travelling before coming in to the collage due to the shortage of local buses and they told that there is a lot of tension during the class becausethey think that how will we go back to the home after the class due to thesereasons the student cannot give the maximum attention towards their study.After grate struggle if they pick the transport then they face the lot of rush in

the bus and sometimes they sit on the bus roof which is very dangerous for thestudents due to all these reasons they lose their marks in to the exams andsome times fails in the subjects.Very shocking news is that there is no transport facility for the students in thesecond shift.

Cafeteria Problem:

It is shocking for all of us when we came to know thatthere is no cafeteria in the whole premises of the collage.

Being a student we understand the importance of cafeteria in the premises of collage. Due to the lack of this facility in the collage students use to go outside thepremises of the collage which is very dangers and the wastage of precious time of study.

When they leave the premises of the collage their attitude towards study reducedand they spend most of times out side the collage. When they came back late inthe class room and they join the class in the half way of lecture which is distortionfor the teachers as well as for the rest of the class. Although these students jointhe lecture in the half way but they do not digest the lecture as they have alreadymissed the bases and initial part of the lecture.

Now I would like to tell you about the refreshment products that students eatoutside of the premises of the collage. The quality of these products are very lowand some are very dirty or they can damaged the health very badly and sometime it may cause some such kind of disease which prevention is very difficult ortoo heavy costly. Then student take a lot number of leaves and they do notconcentrate on the study that causes fails in to the final exams and they arepassed then they got the bad marks and not get the good grades in study.

Infrastructure:

From the teachers and students we came to know that abig construction is work in progress. The students are till suffering due to the poorinfrastructure. There are not enough rooms in the collage. Therefore somestudent bachelor of science (B.S) like BASIT ALI &USAMA told us that they gotadmission in the morning but due to lack of rooms their classes have been shift in

the evening.

Old rooms are not worthy enough to be used for educational purpose. The classrooms usually have some broken benches and the benches which are availabledoes not satisfied the strength of the class. As the number of students much morethen the capacity of the rooms sometimes the teacher can merge the twosections in to the one class but does not manage the number of benches so mostof students have to stand during the lecture so they can not give theconcentration to the lecture.





Another very big problem that we identify about the infrastructure of theinfrastructure was that students don’t have proper facility of drinking water inthe college. This is very serious problem that students of the bachelor &master class do not have proper basic facility of drinking water. One of thesamples has been shown in below picture.

Strikes Problem:Before the 6 months when the union exists in the M.A.O

collage mostly the strikes was held in the collage due to these strikes studentsare facing the lot of problems. The union members closed the all classes andwith the force they cannot allow the students to attend the class due to theshortage of lectures they cannot complete their course and get the goodresults.

Library Problem:





After interviewing 20 to 25 students about the entire coursewe came to know that another big problem that students are facing the libraryproblem.

According to the student there are many books in the library but most of themare not relating to their course. Another fact that we realize that book which isrelated to them is of old version. Teachers have recommended them latestversion. Therefore the students face the great deal of problems. According to thestudent of collage library should be enriched with the book of their course andother books relating to their course and can be used for as supplements to theirsubject.

Union Problem:A very big and mutual problem of the all students was

the union of the some students.

Union in M.A.O is almost eradiated from the collage but student told us that inthe time of the compete hold of the union there were too many strikes in thecollage and every student was forced to be part of it and those who refused tobecome part of it were tortured.

The students told us that union should be eradicated from the collage completely.





No Proper Playing Ground:

Another problem that student told us and weobserved it personally was that there was no proper playing ground in the collage.When we saw the ground it was half covered by the water and other was coveredby the some students who were playing. There is no proper grass in the ground.The water which is present in the ground is so dirty and mixed with seweragewater. There are many diseases spreads from this dirty water. This is so harmful

for the students and near the residential houses.

When we visit it we realize that half of the ground was covered with water for last5 days. It was very irritating for the students that in the weather of the solid coldthey can’t study properly in the sunlight as only place for them are the ground.





Drugs Addiction:Due to the lack of attention

of teachers and school management student atthe very early age when they take the admissionin the collage start the smoking and other drugaddictions. The parents of some students alsosmoke in the front of their children so their child

can not feel that the smoking is a bad habit. Aswell as boys these days also girls start smoking.These are the bad habits which damage the student brain and mostly theirhealth so their education career is badly damaged by the drugs.

Absence of textbooks:A lot of students told us that there is

a shortage of textbooks in the markets when the bag isstarted in the collage because the government doesnot allow the publishers to publish the large amount of books. The books which are available at the market arevery high cost due to the shortage. Some students cannot afford the books athigh prices.

Medium of Instruction:The most of students told us that there is a frequent change

in the medium of instructions. In the process the student’s can memorized thetext book and write on the papers and passed in the good grades so the





purpose of the education fails so when the students comes in to their fieldthen he badly fails in their job.

Transfer of teachers:Mostly student have a problem that the teacher cannot complete

the bag and in the middle of the bag they have a transfer letter and theteacher goes in to the other collage so thenew teacher start teaching to the class so thestudents feel very difficult to understand the

method of new teacher. Water problem:There is a lot of water

problem in the collage in the whole collagethere is only one water cooler is availableand it is not working. So the students drinkthe dirty water on the other resources. Thateffect badly on the health of the students

and they suffering from different type of diseases.There is not facility is available for the purification of dirty water.

No Trip & Entertainment:

Most of the students told us that the collage

management has not organized any trip for the students so far. They told us thatthis is the age of learning and enjoyment. Their collage provides them only onefacility.





There is also no entertainment program in the collage. No sports gala, no farewellparties and concerts. If we provide the students the outside visits then they havefresher mind and increases their work capacity & quality.

Specific Problems:

In our research relating to the problems of students werealized that some problems are specifically relating to the students of theparticular course. When I (Usman) and Irfan met with Hamza he told us that he isin this college for last two years. We interview Hamza and he told us many factorswhich were about students and teacher both then we understand the majorproblems of the institution and their reasons why the people can not like to take

the admissions in the government college.

We have characterized them as following:





B.S students Problems:

We met with 10 to 20 students of B.S and they told us thatwe are facing the many problems some are discuss in the following:

1) They have taken the admission in the morning but collage administrationhas organized our classes in evening without any notice.

2) According to the student the teachers which are teaching them are notexperience in B.S subjects. Therefore the students do not understand thelecture.

3) Another surprising fact that those students told us that they have not beengiven course outline. They have no idea what are the topics that need to

cover. I.Com Students Problems:

We went in to the commerce block. First we discuss with i.com students.This badge was started recently and they come on the college level after thecomplication of metric level. They told

Us some their problems which are as following:

1) They told us the teachers do not give the proper concentration on themand they just come to class to fulfill the formality.

2) Most of teachers come in the class and cannot teach us just take theattendance of the class and passed the time.

3) The students have no idea of commerce subjects because they learnedabout the science subjects in their previous education career so teacherdirectly stars the main topics and cannot discuss in detail or teach us bases.

B.Com Students Problems:

After the intermediate block we went in to the graduationblock. The problems of the B.Com students are less than the students of B.S &I.Com but there are some problems which we are discussing in the following:





1) B.Com students told us that there is no regular test schedule in the collage.They told us that if regular test are held in the collage then the preparationis much easy for them.

2) Environment Problem: B.Com students told us that they feel that in ourcollage there is no study environment.

F.Sc Students Problems:

These students are related with the science subjectsand they are divided in two groups.

1) Pre-medical group:These are the student which studies the science subjects and

after the intermediate they go for the M.B.B.S study and become a doctorbut they are facing many problems which are given as follow:i) There are shortage of science teachers and have the large numbers of

students so the teacher cannot focus the all students.ii) There is shortage of laboratory equipment in the collage and the

equipment which is present in the collage is outdated and they have nofunds for purchasing the latest equipment.





2) Pre-engineering group:

These students are related with the engineering field and they becomean engineer in the future but these students told us their seriousproblems which are too shocking:

i) The large numbers or elements like (salt, assets, catalysts, etc) are notavailable in the class which the student use for their practices and onthese bases they give the final exam practical paper.

ii) The physics laboratory not has the equipment which is related to theirsubjects like galvanometer, resistances, pendulum etc.

iii) It was shocking news for us sometimes teacher does not take the

iv) Practical paper because they do not have the equipment and theypassed the all students without taking test.

I.cs & B.cs Student Problems:

After visiting the commerce block we went to theinformation technology department. We met with some students which doing I.cs& B.cs in the M.A.O collage. They told us their some problems which are given asfollow:





i) The lab assistance mostly absent from the duty and the computer lab isnot available for the students.

ii) The computers which are available most of it are out dated and somecomputers can not works properly.

iii) The teachers are not high qualified and trained so they can not able toteach the students.

iv) The internet facility is not available in the computer lab.v) The number of students is very large instead of the number of

computers.

Teachers Problems:

To have complete information relating to theproblems of the teachers we interviewed many teachers including (mathematics,accounting& Urdu etc.). When we interviewed a couple of teachers we realizedthat like students problem there are many problems which are common amongthe teacher therefore we cauterized teacher’s problem in to the main two heads:

These are the problems which is explained andcomplained by all of the teachers.

Attendance problem:The major according to the sir is the attendance problem. He told us

there is no proper check & balance of student’s attendance by the management.





There is no such restriction in the collage which convinces the students that theymust attend the lecture. As students have no fear about leaving the lecture.

No Proper Planning:

According to the sir there should be a proper plan forcollage relating to the progress of the students education.

There should be a plan and after every specific period for example after each yearthere should be a proper check & balance of the plan and then we should identifythe weaknesses in our plan so that we can achieve our goals.

Principle Appointment Problem:

According to the teachers that the appointment of theprinciple is directly under the influence of political people therefore mostly thosepeople are appointed as a principle which is not capable to run the institution.They don’t posses any administrat ive skills as their appointment is not on themerit. Mostly are not highly qualified.

As the appointment of principle is on the political bases the principle miss-use the

students for the purpose of the benefits of those political persons who haveappointed him due to these reasons the environment of the institution is notremain same for the fewer able of student study.

His is one of the cause due to the union created and many students join theseunion for protection and power in the institution and when they join the unionthey get the short time benefit and most of students attract for union due toinfluence of the students who are in unions.

Principle Duration Problem:According to the teachers those people are appointed as the

principle of the institution whose services remain maximum 2 or three years.





So if a principle makes a plan for running the institution in the better way theimplementation of the plan diminishes as the retirement of that specific principle.

Teacher told us that a plan to run the institution in the better result must be

prolong from 5 to10 years to get required conclusion but on other hand in ourinstitution the specific principle and their planes have maximum duration up tothe duration of their service period which is not more then 3 years due to shorttime of period they can not able to complete their plan and due to change of every principle and his plan the whole management, administration and teachersface a lot of problems as they have to change themselves according to the newprinciple which remain a bench of concentration among teachers, managementand administration.

Lack of test Schedules:

The entire teacher told us that the better preparation of the finalexamination that should be a proper test schedule which might be weekly or onmonthly bases but the teacher told us in our insinuate there is no such planningfor test schedule.

In the other hand side if their will be a test schedule student will attend thelecture with more punctuality, regularly and interest. This encouraged theteachers to teach with more passion and by better method.

Absence of qualitative teacher training programs :As already discussed once a teacher is inducted he seldom goes through anytraining. In case a teacher is fortunate enough to go for training it never ever isof any quality and hence there exists no grooming facility for a teacher

Poor Coordination of Teachers:

There is no proper coordination among the teachers every teachercare about only his subject. Teacher should ask the students about the rest of their students so the teacher will have a circle of feed back among themselves.





This will help teachers to improve their method and it wills finally benefiting thestudents.

After interviewing the teachers we realized that thereare some problems which are related with some specific teachers.

Prof Muhammad Ghulraze:

Introduction :He is teaching in M.O.A collage as lecture of accounting. He done his

metric from centre model school on lower mall and then he completed hisf.sc from G.C Collage Lahore and then done his B.com and M.B.A fromPunjab university in the excellent grade. He is teaching more then five yearsin the M.A.O collage.





Problems:The teacher told us that they face a lot of problems in the collage which aregiven below:

The infrastructures of the collage are very bad and not according to thestandard of education. The capacity of the classrooms is less then thestrength of the students. There are no books related to the accounting inthe library and no extra information is available for the students for theireducation career.The environment of the class is not sufficient for the study purpose becausethe students are not attending the class and they face the lot of problemsin the accounting. The subject is lightly tough but student’s ignorance

makes it too difficult.The administration is not corporative with the teachers and they do notplan the papers or the session according to the te acher’s requirement.Sometimes the student cannot attend the whole year class but theadministration sent their admission to the university.





Prof Abdul Quddos: Introduction:

Prof Abdul Quddos is the teacher of mathematics in theM.A.O collage. Their qualification is M.sc mathematics and he has a lot of experience in their field.

Problems :

Sir Abdul Quddos told us that the very big drawback of theinstitution education system is that there is no interference of the parents towardthe education of their children’s.

According to the Prof Abdul quddos their must be proper awareness among theparents that so far th ey don’t take interest in the study of their children. They can

not get required result from their children’s. Prof Abdul quddos told us that if we

request the parents comes to the institution for the consistency of their childrenusually it happens that p arents don’t come and their children don’t convey themessage of professors to their parents their presence ask by the professors.

It looks like that parent’s belief that their responsibility is up to the admission of their children in the institution. This is cause of the failure of their childrenbecause hey can not give the proper at attention to their children in the home.





Prof Abdul Rehman: Introduction:

He is the professor of Urdu literature. He is teaching from 15years in the M.A.O collage and he told us some problems which are specificallyrelated with his subject.

Problems :

According to the professor the least inters taken by thestudents is in his subject Urdu. He told us that the students belief that as theUrdu is their national language they can pass it and understand easily but theirthinking point of view is absolutely wrong like other subjects Urdu literaturealso need a deal to time and interest to understand it and prepare it for theexamination.

A very few books are available in the library related with the Urdu literaturebut the books which are available mostly out dated or not related to theirsubject. There is no area is available for the students in which they study theUrdu literature.

The most of students can not attend the lecture of Urdu in the whole year andcan not give any test or paper in the collage in the result at the end of theyear. when they attend their final exams they failed in to the Urdu. Only onelibrary exists in Lahore which is quaid-e-azam library.





When we completed our research we conclude the following For the new students there is no guidance for them. Therefore new studentsfaces many problems relating what they should do and what they have to dofurther for completing the formalities relating to the admission which changethe image of college that it is just a B-grade institution there will be norestriction relating to the study.

There is no proper transportation for students. Precious time of students iswasted in the problem of transportation. One of the major problems that

students are facing is related to the transportation. Students suffer big tensionrelating to the travelling to college.

As there is no cafeteria in the college students use to go outside the collegeeat substandard food which result in the various disease and waste theirprecious time outside the college.

Most of the students went out for the refreshments they came late in thecollege and join the lecture in the middle of the class which is irritating forboth the teacher and rest of the class.

Those students who join the lecture in the half way do not understand thelecture as they have missed the basics of the lecture.

Due to lack of proper infrastructure of the college students suffer a lotproblem as some time there is room for them especially in 2 nd shift.

Strikes affect the classes schedule very adversely. Important time of studentsand teachers is wasted for unproduced works

As there is not enough book relating to the course of the students in thelibrary so those students who are willing to use librar y can’t take advantage

from it. The union had effect the educational environment of the college very badly

students use to waste their time in strikes rather than studying their coursebooks.





There is no proper playing ground in the college for students. Thereforestudents went out for playing for little entertainment. And by doing this theywaste more time and bunk the lectures

In the college young students become addictive of drugs. And waste theirmoney and time in wrong deeds

The medium of instruction has been change from Urdu to English but mentalcapacity of the students has not accepted this change. This is the biggest drawback in education system in the college.

Transfer of the teacher also affects the students whenever a new teacher jointhe class in the half course students need a time to adjust themselves with thenew teacher. When they adjust with new teacher too much time and lectures

have been wasted. There is no arrangement for trip in the college. When such a program is held inothers institutions these students feel sad don’t take interest in the collegeprogram.

There are no entertainment programs in the college. For the sack of entertainment students programmed their on event for which usually theybunk the classes.

There are not enough class rooms in the college. Therefore usually it is

observed that students have to stand in the class during lecture. That divertstheir attention from the lecture.

There is no proper and fully equipped laboratory in the class. Thereforestudents can’t complete the practices which are compulsory for theirconcepts.

Teachers told us that students attitude towards study is very non serious theattendance in most of the classes is less than 50 percent.

There is no proper planning in the college relating to the progress of level of

education in the institution. This is also a very big drawback of education in thecollege.

The appointment of the principal is mostly on political basis. The majorconcern for the principal to pay attention to his appointer rather than thestudents.





The duration of the principal is not more than 3 years. Therefore the wholepolices are changed with the new principal and in this way students suffer verybadly.

There is no test program in the college which is compulsory for the final examspreparations. Those affect the students directly.

There is no training for the teachers. Therefore teachers can’t improve theirteaching method. With the time teaching method should also be increased toimprove the education but it does not happen in the college.

There was no coordination among the teachers. A teacher is only interested inthe subject he is teaching. Teachers do not ask for others subjects fromstudents if they do so they can improve the education system of the college.

The policies lack long term vision and its implementation is affected by unduepolitical interference.

Absence of realistic plans. Quality is low in the field of academic, administration, research and

equipments Ineffective governance. Poor recruitment practice. Teacher’s absenteeism.

Insufficient budget allocation. Underutilization of funds. Lack of commitment and inefficient management.





In our research we collect the suggestions from the teachers and studentswe interviewed in the college. Therefore most of the suggestion is fromthem and I have mentioned the name of those teachers and studentswhom recommendation I have added in the report.

Professor Ghulraze:Sir Ghulraze is controller examination and professor of

accountancy in the college and he shares with us some very usefulrecommendations. According to the Sir

There should be a proper planning relating to the progress of thestandard of education in the college. So after every person assesshimself and figure out that what he should do more to improve histeaching level.

Students should be fined and banned for bunking the lecture. Teachers must be given power to rusticate those students which are

spoiling the whole class environment.

Professor Abdul Quddos:Sir Abdul Quddos is professor of mathematics in

the college. He also gave us some very important suggestions to improvethe quality of education in the college. According to the sir

There should a communication system between teachers andparents. So when both look after students the result will be muchbetter and encouraging.

The appointment of the principal should be without politicalinterference and for at least five years so he can implement hispolices and take feedback.

The course should be up to date to increase the interest of thestudents




Student Bilal:

Bilal is the student of B.com in the college. According tohim we can improve educational system by

Building the better class rooms with the capacity of around 50 to60 students

Increasing the communication between teachers and students.

Personal suggestions:

Our suggestions are as following:

We should start a campaign in the whole country to regenerate thepatriotism among the students that they should learn and study withthe purpose of working hard for Pakistan. And to make the Pakistanworld most beautiful and progressed country.( USMAN ISLAM)

The students in the college should be assured the very besteducation in the city on the basis of merit and irrespective of financial constraint. ( AMIR ZAHID)

College should be able to meet minimum defined standard of quality,

procedural reliability and fiscal solvency. (RAHAT AMANAT) Changes should be made with in the existing resources. There should be continuous and effective arrangements for, in

service training of teacher. ( MUHAMMAD IRFAN ) Knowledge should be updated according to the use of modern

instructional technology. (HAMZA NOOR ELAHI) It is important to setup evaluation criteria and programs for any

reform effort that is initiated in the system. While it is understoodthat not everything can be measured quantitatively, it is vital thatprogress be monitored. Reform is not once-off initiative; it is anongoing process. (SOHAIB KAZMI)

Constant vigilance and evaluation for the purpose of learning andkeeping the process on track is necessary. (KAMRAN ABBAS).
