INTRODUCTION MANAGEMENT EDUCATION

*Management Education in the State of Maharashtra has been designed to impart quality

knowledge to young men and women who would dedicate their professional competence and

aptitude to build in future a robust knowledge based economy to shape globe, a better place to

live. With this purpose in mind the curriculum for management studies is reviewed periodically

and redesigned to include/modify topics and subjects to cater to vibrant and ever changing needs

of the industry and commerce. One of the key objectives has always been to imbibe professional

values and ethical principles in the hearts and minds of the student.

To improve the overall effectiveness, the present day policy of the government in the area of

higher education has been to take advantage of private participation. Instead of taking the total

responsibility of imparting higher education on its shoulders, the government presently has been

moving into the regulatory role and thus providing immense and wide opportunities to private

sectors. With the help of competent academician and educators, the private institutions can tailor

the process to understand and fill in the needs of various emerging niches in the market place.

The Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra understands and

appreciates the need of the hour and endeavors to cater the management education fit for the

purpose. Its efforts have always been to ensure continuous innovations and development to

sustain the high momentum already generated by the past productive work done in the area of

higher education. 3

In India the process starts with a candidates applying for the MBA Entrance Tests held either at

the National level or institute level which is notified well in advance. The candidates are required

to fill up the application form which primarily seeks data about the candidate in terms academics,

work experience, interests and pursuits, other achievements and domiciliary information, etc.

This initial data forms the basis for all subsequent interactions and more specifically the personal

interview. Candidates are advised to fill up the application forms carefully, and retain a copy of

the same for their future reference. A Career in management is a hot pursuit in today’s world. In

the changing economic scenario all over the globe- the pay and prestige has soared to

unimaginable heights and accordingly the race for getting into the top Management Schools in

Findings and Observations

Following are the findings and observations of the study,

The sample consisted of 62 % male and 38 % female student of final year engineering.

Father’s occupation is one of most important factor for the student to select the option of their carrier. It is observed that out 369 respondent 58% students marked under the head of salaried. And 22% student marked Business as father’s occupation. Salary is the limited source of income, restricted the student choose the better option. But now days the Nationalized and private financial Institutions provides the educational loan to the students. 8% student marked other profession and only 4% student marked agriculture as fathers’ occupation. There is no relation between fathers’ occupation, income status and choosing management course for further studies.

It is seen that only 12% parents are below fifty thousand Incomes, and 34% parents are below fifteen thousand incomes per month. The percentage of below forty thousand incomes per month is 9%.where as 19% parents have below thirty thousand incomes per month, and 26% marked as below twenty thousand incomes per month.

Out of 365 students majority of the students(85.75) are aware of the management courses but 53% students give the preference to Employment whereas 35% student gives preference to higher studies .only 8% students is interested in Business. 34% parent’s income is below fifteen thousand, and 26% parents’ income is twenty thousand per month. It means that total 60% parents can not afford fees for higher studies. This maybe the prime reason that 53% students give preference to employment.

Awareness with respect to management courses is cent - percent. 82% students are aware of management courses only 18% students are not aware of the management courses.

The 71% students select the MBA course for further studies. Whereas 24% students give the preference to part time PGDBM course. Only 1% students selected the MMM and 1% selected MMS course

As the students have the multiple choices for selection of the course out 364 267tudents select the MBA course.

(82% students prefer the MBA course but only 70% students are aware about entrance test.)*

67% students are aware about the Eligibility required for management courses.29% students are not aware. 4% students did not respond. ( the data is collected from the engineering colleges which are having MBA course)

34% Student marked computer as a specialisation where as 19%, 15%, 13% and 10% students marked finance, other, HR, Marketing respectively.

It is observed that the students have the high expectation of getting job. Out of 352, 80% students expecting high job profile. Whereas 15% are not sure 5% student marked low.

Conclusion on hypothesis

There is remarkable scope for MBA Course, especially due to reputation of the university.

1. 70% students are aware of Management courses. 67% students are interested to do the MBA course. This proves that the MBA is the most important sought for Engineering Graduates. There is better career growth after completing the Management course.

2. Among the branches of Engineering degree Student of Mechanical branch are

more interested towards the Management Courses. Null

hypothesis is rejected so the alternative hypothesis is accepted. There is an

association between the two alternatives .It is prove that students of Electrical

branch are interested towards the Management courses.

3. Parents Occupation & Income status are two most influencing factors to select

the Management Courses. The hypothesis is not proved. There is no any

association between the two attributes.

4. Peer decision plays an important role in selection of management course. The hypothesis

is not proved. There is no association between the peers decision and selection of

Management courses.

Suggestions and Recommendations from Eminent and Experts about

Management Education

Prof.(Dr.) R.K.Choudhary, Director, Business school APIIT SD India. –

‘Creating Global Manager, (Competition success review. Page 26 )

Management studies require multidisciplinary approach. Curriculum must meet the needs of the industry. Industry-academia collaboration needs to be strengthening to make curriculum relevant for the changing business scenario. Doing research on Indian approaches in management to evolve Indian Management theories & practices. This will equip students with necessary attributes and knowledge to take informed decisions to compete successfully in the knowledge based economy.

Indian entrepreneurial scenario lagged behind East Asia and the West. Every student wants to work in a multinational company instead of creating his/her own enterprises and growing them into globally successful companies.

M.P.Sinha, Executive Director, GHRDC – (MBA Curriculum Mindset And Strategies) (competition success review. page 6)

“MBA Curriculum Mindset And Strategy“Business school curriculum should be designed around management issues & problems not as disciplines or streams as it is today. Business schools must identify major problems confronting the contemporary management and design the courses around them .They should call for complete change in our mindset on the MBA Management curriculum perhaps we need to drop much of the existing courses offered in MBA Programme and redesign the curriculum around ‘subjects’ or issues.”

The future of management education in India is nearly interwoven with the challenges of Indian economy sustained growth enhanced competitiveness, building synergy and creating visionary organizations. To meet these challenges, Business schools must produce managers who are performers, not analysts. For all above, a change in the mindset is needed, where Business school thrive on partnership with industry and business faculty excel in managing learning process and learning organizations. Should this happen, Business schools will produce Managers, not just MBAs.

‘Social sector: A New Chapter In Management Education” (page 16)

Social Sector: A New Chapter In Management Education-The role of B-schools has widened to include courses and curriculum, which directly attribute

43

Page 44: Research paper

Research Paper of Mrs. M.R.Bhosale “Awareness of Management courses run by Univ. Of Pune”

to social sectors for its effectiveness to promote overall growth of our society against changing demands and situation.

Corporate Social Responsibility has become a new chapter in B-school texts. With the concept of triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) gaining ground in the corporate sector, business schools are incorporating specialized courses no Corporate Social Responsibility as a part of their academic offering. The concept of triple bottom line means taking into account environmental and social performance in addition to financial performance.

Indian B-Schools have also started understanding this growing need of instilling the value of Corporate Social Responsibility in the students and have taken the necessary steps towards fulfilling them.

K.S.Srinivasa Rao., T.A.Pai Management Institute, Manipal

Is their a place for Indian B-schools in the Global Village? A Review – (page 23)

The present state of affairs of our management education demands immediate attention, if the drift and decay is to be avoided. The educational culture of 21st century warrants new reform packages and an altogether fresh approach in tune with global futuristic trends in management education. The fast expanding domains of knowledge, owing to increasing pace information explosion, necessitates radical changes involving newer option of academic renewal.

The need of the hour is for greater introspection on innovative methodologies of teaching and research in our institutes. The emphasis should be on improving the quality in all aspects – right from the intake of the students till the placed.

Suggestions and Recommendations

Counseling, career guidance center, Training and Development centers are helpful for the students to take the decision of their future.

The College and staff members may provide the information related to further studies, admission procedures and eligibility of the courses.

The Colleges and Institutions have to organize “Industry –Institution interaction programs” which will be helpful for students.

The college as well as faculty members have to motivate the student for research work.

IT sector might be attracting sector for the students, on the contrarily, Engineering students have wide scope in Manufacturing Industries. “Industrial visits, Guest lectures Presentations of Industrial eminent will prove effective.
