Adaptant® is a German SME dedicated to empowering users over their data, while enabling new ways for data to be used.

Adaptant’s vision is that through empowering users to take control of their own data, new user-centric business models and services will be realized, fundamentally changing the data value chain.

Adaptant was established in 2015 specifically to take advantage of the recent and impending changes to the individual privacy landscape in Europe, with a specific focus on providing technological solutions and innovations supporting the upcoming Regulation (EU) 2016/679, or General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

We have positioned ourselves to provide relevant and flexible products, solutions, and services to individuals interested in exercising their new rights, as well as to businesses who need to assess their current and future compliance for existing and newly collected data. We also offer support to organisations which are beginning a move towards more inclusive business models and service offerings that are reflective of the individual’s wants and needs.

ADAPTANT LABSAdaptant Labs is the research and development arm of the Adaptant Group and is the primary vehicle for knowledge dissemination, technology transfer, and intellectual property realization. CORE COMPETENCIES

Policy Analysis and Inputs:Adaptant is an active member of a number of European Technology Platforms (ETPs) and contractual Public-Private Partnerships (cPPPs) across a range of technology areas, and a regular contributor to the Strategic Research and Innovation Agendas (SRIAs) that intersect with our areas of interest. Adaptant is furthermore a regular participant in EC Public Consultations, Policy Workshops and related events, with a focus on privacy, data ownership/usage/liability, IoT and the data economy. Where relevant, Adaptant also proactively contributes policy inputs to countries outside of the EU looking to evolve their own privacy laws.

Standardisation:

We believe that standardisation and increased interoperability will be key to realizing the advantages of IoT and the data economy. Adaptant aims to maintain a steady outlook of the standards landscape in its areas of activity, leverage standards for processes and system design wherever possible, and proactively contribute back to both existing and emerging (pre-normative) standards wherever gaps or opportunities are identified. Within the area of personal data usage control, Adaptant is one of the founding members of the CEN Workshop 84 on a ‘Self-Sovereign Identifier(s) for Personal Data Ownership and Usage Control’ (CEN WS ISÆN).

Market Analysis and Business Model Innovation:

While many look at the GDPR and supporting legislation as a compliance burden, we consider this a pivotal point in evolving innovative, privacy-preserving, and inclusive business models that directly engage the data subject/data controller in value co-creation, further facilitating the right to individual informational self-determination and ultimately turning privacy-preservation and compliance into a source of competitive advantage for European industry. Beyond the opportunities presented by the GDPR in enabling the Digital Single Market (DSM) in the EU, Adaptant also closely monitors and contributes to emerging policy in countries aiming to follow the GDPR’s lead, allowing us to contribute differentiated, longer-term, growth-focused, commercial exploitation and go-to-market strategies that continue to respect privacy.

Open Source System Integration & Software Engineering:

Adaptant employees have contributed thousands of changes to prominent Open Source projects, such as the Linux kernel. With strong expertise in the Open Source community, we appreciate the value of component reuse and of knowing when to extend or to start over. As Open Source contributors, we understand the importance of giving back to the community and the need for community-focused development methodologies to facilitate the acceptance of project results during and beyond the project lifecycle. As a member of the Open Invention Network (OIN), we are also committed to the non-assertion of patents against Open Source components, providing a basis for unique commercial exploitation strategies that are both Open Source and IPR friendly.

Privacy by Design (PbD) and Data Ethics by Design:

While Adaptant has extensive experience in considering privacy aspects during all stages of the product design lifecycle in line with the requirements set out by PbD methodologies (and the GDPR), we also believe that with the shift towards AI, machine learning, and predictive analytics, PbD principles on their own are insufficient for addressing the legal/ethical tensions arising from the use of data, particularly in the area of autonomous decision-making. To this extent, we also suggest going beyond PbD and promote the inclusion of Data Ethics by Design into the design process, facilitating ethical decision making across the entire data lifecycle.

Multi-National IPR Management: With IP holding companies in both Germany and the United States, Adaptant is uniquely positioned to develop and manage multi-national IPR strategies for project consortia, increasing the amount of realisable IP from projects while helping growth-oriented SMEs, with a focus on commercial exploitation compete on a level, playing field with larger multi-national organisations.

OUR ROLE

As a consortium member, Adaptant is taking the lead role in technology use case validation. The use cases include: • automobile usage-based insurance (UBI),

which focuses upon GDPR regulatory compliance of connected car telematics;

• a health care application treating sensitive personal data securely (and GDPR compliant) within public cloud infrastructures (led by consortium partner OCC);

• a High-performance computing (HPC) use case for leveraging the cost benefits of public cloud infrastructures against the need to secure highly sensitive corporate data and analysis results.

Owing to the cross-disciplinary reach and diversity of the use cases, contributions will be made to the overall project architecture, testbed, and methodology. Technical contributions will focus not only on the secure cloud data processing and execution environment, but also decentralized data lifecycle management. Adaptant will contribute to the exploitation of project results, innovation management, and standardization activities beyond the time horizon of the project.

Secure cloud computing is key for business success and end-user adoption of federated and decentralised cloud services and thus essential to stimulate the growth of the European Digital Single Market. RestAssured will provide solutions to specific technical concerns of data protection in the cloud (such as geo-location restrictions on personal data), which are imposed by the dynamic, multi-stakeholder and decentralized nature of federated cloud systems. These concerns mean that privacy and security by design approaches will no longer be sufficient, due to uncertainty at design time of how the cloud and privacy requirements may dynamically evolve and change at run time. To this end, RestAssured provides novel mechanisms and cloud architectures for the runtime detection, prediction and prevention of data protection violations.RestAssured will assure the protection of sensitive business and citizen data in the cloud by combining four pillars of innovation: (1) combination of fully homomorphic encryption to process data without decryption, with cloud enablement of SGX hardware for protected data processing; (2) sticky policies for decentralized data lifecycle management; (3) models@runtime for data protection assurance; (4) automated risk management for run-time data protection.

The applicability and usefulness of the RestAssured solutions will be demonstrated through three use cases driven by project partners and involving other stakeholders from outside the consortium; High-Performance Computing for commercial enterprises; Pay As You Drive usage-based insurance; and self-directed social care for vulnerable adults and social care providers. The main impact of RestAssured will be to enable the free and seamless movement of data within the EU, whilst assuring conformance to data protection regulations, such as the EU Data Protection Directive and its successor the General Data Protection Regulation.
