8. Managing your references
1. TIME Management
Schedule/Plan –
e.g. Gant charts A basic time management tool
Short period (weeks to months) or long time planning (Years)
Create possible and reliable schedule. Be realistic.
Its ok to amend and remake the schedule or plan
Include holidays and risk margins

2. Strategic planning
Activities Flow and Gant Charts
Make a flow chart of your research activities
Clearer view on what needs to be done
Keep you organize
Tips: Plan and do time consuming activities first. e.g.:
Ordering equipments early
Plan parallel activities- e.g. Do literature reviews parallel to other activities
Write early
Data collection
(Rainfall data from Drainage and Irrigation Department, Malaysian Meteorology Department)
Data screening
Fit data to the best
distribution model
Data processing (Convert data to Annual Maximum Series according
various rainfall periods and seasonal variation)
Determine the average recurrence interval ARI
for each site
Conduct spatial analysis on the ARIs according to the specific sub-
basins
Design the Rainfall

Effectiveness of early
warning system in
Malaysia
Identify important parameters related to early warning system and the
community
Construct questionnaires
Conduct interviews at site on people at towns affected by the
flood
Disseminate questionnaires to relevant agencies trough emails or postage
services
Questionnaires Analysis
Conduct interviews at agencies to obtain information on the
standard of procedures to warn public against flood
Collect questionnaires from relevant agencies
Report writing
3. Risks and Challenges
False and broken equipments and research tools
Computers problems
Lab equipments or machineries
Software’s license expire
Takes time to recover/repair or buying a new one
3. Risks and Challenges
How to avoid? VISIT: Before research starts, visit the
laboratory or research room
INTERVIEW: Ask the supervisors/technicians or existing/previous students on the condition of lab equipments or other research tools (including softwares, computers, etc.).
3. Risks and Challenges
What can be done?
REPORT to technicians/supervisor as soon as
possible
ASK for new equipments as soon as possible
FIND new alternatives (e.g. borrow/rent, attachment)
3. Risks and Challenges
Family or personal problems
Sickness or death
Homesick, lonely
Others – fighting, conflict
3. Risks and Challenges
How to avoid?
Sickness/death: You cant. God‘s hands
UNDERSTAND other cultures
RESPECTFUL to others
POSITIVE thinking
3. Risks and Challenges
What can be done?
DISCUSS: Don’t be afraid to discuss with supervisor
COUNSALING
RE-SCHEDULE and plan
TAKE A BREAK
4. Attitude
GOOD ATTITUDE IS THE KEY!!
Discipline
Visit supervisor periodically
Consistent
Work hard
5. Environment
Conducive research environment
Clean
Organized
Best practice research room
Research group
Private library
Private pantry and rest area
6. Managing supervisor
What can be done? How to manage your supervisor: Maintain good relationship Periodic meeting –try meeting once a week
even if you think you have nothing to talk about
Attend every group meeting/conference/seminar your supervisor suggests
Keep your emails short and to the point

What kind of person he/she is?
What he does/doesn’t like about his student?
Avoid what he doest like and do what he likes
6. Managing supervisor
What can be done? How to manage your supervisor: If difficult to find and is very busy Chase your supervisor and ask for his short time
to discuss/ask something really important
Make appointment and be punctual
Prepare short questions
Plan and draft what you think is right for your research in advance before asking him/her plainly what to do
Be independence but with supervisor’s consent and awareness
6. Managing supervisor
What can be done? How to
manage your supervisor:
If very difficult to handle and can risk
your research
Report to dean
Change supervisor
Request for a co-supervisor that can help
you
7. Managing research data and
references
Managing research data and references:
Identify data management software during early stages of research
Take time in the beginning to learn them. Do not wait last minute
Use managing Software from the beginning
To manage references: e.g. Endnote, Zotero, Mendalay
To manage thesis writing: e.g. Microsoft Office words Styles and Formats, Zero Draft Thesis (Book)
7. Managing research data and
references
Managing research data and references:
Back-up your data:
External hardisks/Cds
Servers (Dropbox/Google Drives etc.)
Proper filing of literatures
Use endnote
Site while you write
