Research Issues in the Management of Technology: Perspectives and Models

The Journal of Engineering and Technology Management (JET-M) an- nounces a special issue on the above topic with the aim of developing, testing, or advancing research and theory in the field of innovation and technology management. Its particular focus will be on analyzing both conceptual and methodological barriers to further progress in this field, and identifying new approaches to advancing theoretical and empirical scholarship. We seek pa- pers that produce new theoretical insights and/or empirical findings. Papers that simply review, integrate, or criticize a particular stream of research with- out specifying new directions for scholarly research are not appropriate sub- missions. Submissions may be theoretical, empirical, methodological, or phil- osophical; papers principally addressing the practical aspects of technology management are not suited to the theme of the special issue. Submissions that include both an interesting, original theoretical framework and an empirical test of hypotheses generated by that framework are especially welcome, be they historical, ethnographic, experimental, or mathematical in approach.

Examples of topics authors may address include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

- Should Management of Technology (MOT) develop into a discipline, and if so, what steps are necessary to advance the field in this direction? Is there an interdisciplinary approach to the field that breaks new intellectual ground instead of simply applying established concepts from various disciplines in a new domain?

- Research in MOT reflects a wide variety of theoretical perspectives. Can and should a research paradigm come to characterize the field? Are there promising theoretical frameworks unique to this field that can contribute to the integration and cumulation of knowledge?

- Analytical strategies in MOT are equally diverse, ranging from causal modeling to game theory, to systems theory and beyond. Are there under-uti- lized modeling strategies that have the potential to advance scholarship sig- nificantly? Are there analytical tools whose use may open new areas of study and shed new light on well-studied topics?

* What are the most promising future directions for MOT research? Of par- ticular interest are empirical studies that illustrate interesting potential or emerging research streams.

Authors should follow the manuscript submission procedures for JET-M detailed in each issue. All papers will be evaluated using JET-M’s standard blind-review process. To be considered for this special issue, four copies of the manuscript must be received by the guest editor by September 1, 1991 at the following address:

Professor Philip Anderson Johnson Graduate School of Mangement Malott Hall Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853, USA
