Basics of Horror

Horror films are movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Many horror movies also include a central villain.

My Idea

Film starts with a bunch of friends watching a Horror film, one of the friends takes the film in a different way to the others. The film sparks something dark inside him and he starts to kill his friends one by one. It all comes to a terrifying stand off between the last remaining survivor and the deranged killer that ends with one dieing by the hand of the other.

My Target Audience

I am planning to aim my film at the 18 to 25 year old bracket. I chose this area because my film will be an 18 so that limits me from lowering the age of my target audience. I also chose to go to 25 because my film will be the sort of film that probably wont appeal to the people over the age of 25 e.g. 30 ect.

According to my primary research Comedy is the hands on favourite of the film types. Horror is the favourite of the boys, whereas comedy is high favourite of the girls. Although the results for girls was also high in Horror and the results for boys were also high for comedy

For the boys it was a tie because there are three boys and one voted both Night at the Museum and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but the other two just voted for either one of the two. Night at the Museum was the clear favourite of the girls. But the others only got 1 vote each apart from Die Hard 4.0 that got 0. Just like Atonement got 0 with the boys votes.

This graph shows that my idea got a very positive response. Every questionnaire that I handed out came back that people liked my idea and thought that the concept was very goood.

Primary Research Conclusions

• Overall people think that my idea is good• Although it is a good idea I’ve been told that I

need to add in a bit of gore and blood• Need to put together a storyboard that will plan

out the events of my short film• I also nee to write a rough script and then check

the responses on a small focus group to see if people want to change their minds

Secondary Research

• I took influence from the film Scream made in 1996.

• The killers in Scream say that the reason for there killings is the influence of film.

• This made a good idea for a film so I thought of an idea based on that.

• Also it contrasts the beliefs of some people that violent images e.g. films, video games lead to violent behaviour

On ehow. The subject write a short film says that I need to keep the film simple and that the shorter the film the better.

It is important to set up what’s going to happen in the film from the very start of the film. I need to keep the film organised this will give me the ability to end the film quickly.

I need to keep the film balanced, have one central character and don’t spend a lot of time introducing this character.

I need to try to avoid heavy drama and that should be easy for the type of film that I am creating.

I need to keep the film full and not have long lingering parts like they have in feature length films because I am not having the same amount of time that they are.

Secondary Research Conclusions

• It said on the ehow site about writing a short film that the usual aspects of feature length films don’t really apply to short films.

• My script needs to be full because it will save lingering moments. It helps that my killer wont actually talk because due to my research killers that don’t talk are actually more scary than killers that do
