What Do Physicists Do?'When one hears of the success of the latest

satellite or of a new advance in communica-tions, or of people gaining a better under-standing of the nature of the atom, it is al-most certain that the scientists in the fore-front of that advance of knowledge are physi-cists. Physicists are curious people trying tolearn nature's secrets.

Of course, as one learns more, it becomesnecessary to concentrate one's efforts in cer-tain areas. Theoretical physicists use mathe-matical tools to interpret-the results of ex-periments, and they also suggest new theoriesof nature's behavior. Experimental physicistsdevise laboratory measurements that can testthe theories that have been proposed and ob-tain £acts that can be used as a basis for moreadvanced theories.

Another classification of physicists is bytheir area of specialization, i.e., as astro, solid-state, nuclear, high-energy, bio or low-temper-ature, etc., physicists. And, of course, we couldgroup physicists as being in teaching or in re-search (or both), in industry (the rocket peo-ple employ many physicists), or in govern-ment work (the National Aeronautics andSpace Administration, the National Bureauof Standards or perhaps the Atomic EnergyCommission). Many employers are beginningto realize that people with the broad basicbackground of the physicist can understand

better than specialists the complexities ofmodern technology. Physicists are now doingmuch of the ,work formerly done by elec-trical, aeronautical, mechanical, etc., engi-neers.

Many physicists are employed as teachers.They teach in high schools, colleges, and uni-versities. Many large industries have "on thejob" training programs in which education inphysics plays an important part.

The basic understanding of Nature gainedby physicists and other scientists will surelyprovide the insight necessary to solve the prob-lems of our environment. Pollution, waste dis-posal and disturbed ecology require more sci-entific knowledge, not less, to be effectivelyhandled.

There is a continuing need for more physi-cists especially at the bachelor's degree level.While at the present time there is less demandfor Ph.D. physicists than previously, the long-term need is a real one.

What1s Due Physicists?The salaries paid naturally vary greatly, be-

ing dependent upon the background and abil-ity of the person, and on the job. Broadlyspeaking, the beginning person with a Bach-

elor's degree will start at approximately $800to $900 per month while physicists with thePh.D. are on the average the highest paidscientists in the country. Usually beginningsalaries per month in industry will be thesame as those in teaching; however, the po-tential industrial wage usually is greater.Often scientists are in a position to advanceinto executive positions in major companiesat quite high salaries.

Why Come to Eastern?Most of the students considering physics as

a career are quite capable people who are in-terested in why nature behaves as it does. To

them, "Why come to Eastern?" is a reasonablequestion. The': program in physics, and in re-lated mathematics, at Eastern Illinois Univer-sity is strong. ~ wide range of courses, taughtby professors of ability, experience, and pos-sessing Ph.D.'s in physics, is available. Classsize is kept to a minimum in order that stu-dent-professor contacts are easily made and topermit ample opportunity for questions andclass discussion. Yet Eastern, with a 1970 en-rollment of approximately 8400, is not a smallschool. There are many students with similarinterests and abilities.

Eastern's physics graduates are readily ac-cepted into the communities of scholars ofthe well-known graduate schools, into theranks of industry, and into the teaching pro-fession. In addition to taking a strong scienceprogram, opportunities for study in the areasof literature, philosophy, language, music,and art help make the physics graduate abroadly-educated person.

Before choosing any college or university,the able student should carefully investigatethe size of its classes, the education of its pro-fessors, the laboratory equipment available,the standard of quality of each course, andwhether his classes will be taught hy graduatestudents or by professors.

The physics department offers the under-graduate physics major a choice of the degreesB.A., B.S., and B.S. in Ed., while at the gradu-ate level the M.S. and M.S. in Ed., are availa-ble.

Courses offered at the undergraduate levelinclude general physics, optics, classical me-chanics, electronics, electricity and magnet-ism, atomic, quantum mechanics, nuclear,solid state, thermodynamics, experimentalphysics laboratory, and independent study.The text books used are written by authori-ties in their respective fields and are the sameas those adopted by many leading universitiesof the nation.In addition to work in this department,

each physics major is expected to take ap-proximately three years' work in mathematics.Courses available include computer program-ming, calculus, differential equations, ad-vanced calculus, and matrix algebra. At thehigher levels the distinction between work intheoretical physics and applied mathematicsbecomes slight.

The department sponsors a local studentsection of the A.J.P. and a chapter of the na-tional physics honor society, ~II~.

Adequate equipment is available for exper-imental work in many areas of modern andclassical physics. Much equipment is built up

and maintained through the services of a full-time 'shop man. While the space available tophysics was doubled in 1965, planning is nowunderway for another major expansion of thephysics facilities. This increase will greatlyimprove opportunities for research in severalareas of modern physics.

Where Are Eastern'sGraduates Employed?

In the last few years over 100 people havegraduated with a major in physics from thisdepartment. Many are teaching, others areemployed in industry and government re-search while others are in graduate schoolsacross the nation.

At the present time Eastern physics gradu-ates are working on or have recently obtained

the Ph.D. from such schools as the Universityof Illinois, University of Alabama, Univer-sity of Kentucky, Ohio University, Universityof Southern California, Iowa State University,Michigan State University, University of Wis-consin.

In industry, graduates of the last few yearsinclude employees of Hughes Aircraft, 'West-inghouse, Wright Air Development Center,Litton Industries, McDonnell Aircraft, Inter-national Telephone and Telegraph, MalloryElectric Company, Convair, General ElectricCompany, Livermore Research Laboratory,'Western Electric, and many others.

Eastern physics graduates are now, or haverecently been, faculty members or assistantsat several major universities including theUniversity of Southern California, Universityof Illinois, University of Missouri at Rolla,Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and South Da-kota School of Mines. Junior college physicsinstructors also can get their training at East-ern-for example the instructors of LakeLand, Olney, and Sauk Valley Junior Collegesare Eastern graduates. Many other Easterngraduates teach physics in the high schools ofIllinois and the nation. An area sample in-
