Research for Book & Film Focus of Archives Month During American Archives Month in October, the University Libraries’ Special Collections Department host- ed its third annual open house, featur- ing speakers who discussed their pub- lished works based on research done in Special Collections’ holdings. Titled “Celebrating the Arkansas Experience: Archives Month 2009,” the event began with an overview of the year’s accomplishments and acquisitions presented by Tom W. Dillard, head of Special Collections. The keynote was a lecture on a spooky topic just in time for Halloween. In “How a Library Newsletter Changed My Life: Special Collections and My Research for The Afterlife of Leslie Stringfellow,” Stephen J. Chism, local author and a reference librarian at the Libraries, describes his republication of a rare and privately published book that recounts a Fayetteville family’s experiences in talking with the dead. In The Afterlife of Leslie Stringfel- low: A Nineteenth-Century Southern Family’s Experiences with Spiritu- alism, Chism provides a reprinting of “Leslie’s Letters to His Mother” (Fayetteville, Arkansas: Democrat Publishing Co., 1926), one of the many unusual treasures of local his- tory preserved in Special Collections. Chism noted, “During my research I found that there were only eleven libraries that owned the unusual book Alice Stringfellow had published in 1926 concerning her son’s purported afterlife. These included the libraries of Yale, Notre Dame, Duke ... and the Special Collections Department at the University of Arkansas Libraries.” The book recounts the unusual story of the Stringfellow family, who turned to spiritualism for comfort after the unexpected death of their only son, Leslie, in 1886. “Leslie’s Let- ters” recounts their experiences with “automatic writing,” a form of com- munication with the dead through the use of a planchette. The letters them- selves are a fascinating introduction to the vision of the afterlife held by 19th century spiritualists. In 1911, the family moved to Fayetteville, where the Stringfellows built the house at 329 Washington Avenue as an exact copy of their previous home. Following Chism’s talk and numer- ous questions from the audience, Brian Petty, a graduate student and documentarian from the University, provided and overview and a snip- pet from his film “Finders Keep- ers: The Arkansas Diamond Legacy,” which premiered later in November on AETN. Petty briefly outlined the five years of research he conducted in order to provide material for the film, which served as his master’s thesis. Dillard said, “Archives Month is a celebration that gives every Arkansan an opportunity to reflect on how we came to be as a people — and the importance of the archival collections that document that historical process. Without historical records Arkansans would have no identity, no sense of the past, no realization of the contri- butions and sacrifices that went into building our state over the past two hundred years.” American Archives Month is a col- laborative effort by professional orga- nizations around the nation to raise awareness of the value of archival materials and to encourage persons and organizations to preserve records of enduring historical value for future researchers and historians. Newsletter of the University of Arkansas Libraries “Real People, Real Research Help” Vol. 23 No. 2, 2009 Stephen J. Chism, displaying the free-standing photo of Leslie Stringfellow purchased at an auction that began his quest to discover the story of Stringfellow’s life, and afterlife. Research for Book & Film Focus of Archives Month During American Archives Month in October, the University Libraries’ Special Collections Department host-ed its third annual open house, featur-ing speakers who discussed their pub-lished works based on research done in Special Collections’ holdings. Titled “Celebrating the Arkansas Experience: Archives Month 2009,” the event began with an overview of the year’s accomplishments and acquisitions presented by Tom W.

In The Afterlife of Leslie Stringfel-low: A Nineteenth-Century Southern Family’s Experiences with Spiritu-alism, Chism provides a reprinting of “Leslie’s Letters to His Mother” (Fayetteville, Arkansas: Democrat Publishing Co., 1926), one of the many unusual treasures of local his-tory preserved in Special Collections. “Leslie’s Let-ters” recounts their experiences with “automatic writing,” a form of com-munication with the dead through the use of a planchette. The letters them-selves are a fascinating introduction to the vision of the afterlife held by 19th century spiritualists. In 1911, the family moved to Fayetteville, where the Stringfellows built the house at 329 Washington Avenue as an exact copy of their previous home. Following Chism’s talk and numer-ous questions from the audience, Brian Petty, a graduate student and documentarian from the University, provided and overview and a snip-pet from his film “Finders Keep-ers: The Arkansas Diamond Legacy,” which premiered later in November on AETN. Petty briefly outlined the

five years of research he conducted in order to provide material for the film, which served as his master’s thesis.

Dillard said, “Archives Month is a celebration that gives every Arkansan an opportunity to reflect on how we came to be as a people — and the importance of the archival collections that document that historical process. Without historical records Arkansans would have no identity, no sense of the past, no realization of the contri-butions and sacrifices that went into building our state over the past two hundred years.” American Archives Month is a col-laborative effort by professional orga-nizations around the nation to raise awareness of the value of archival materials and to encourage persons and organizations to preserve records of enduring historical value for future researchers and historians.

In Memoriam: Janet Dixon Janet Bergquist Dixon, maps librar-ian, liaison to the geosciences, envi-ronmental dynamics, and anthropol-ogy programs and departments, and librarian/professor in the University of Arkansas Libraries, passed away on October 21, 2009. Before coming to the University of Arkansas, Jan received her under-graduate education at Prescott College in Arizona, a master’s degree in geog-raphy at the University of Colorado, and a master’s in library science at the University of Texas. At the University of Arkansas, Jan worked in 1982 as a Research Assistant in the Department of Botany and Microbiology, then as a staff member at the Libraries, where she was appointed a Visiting Assistant Librarian in 1989. In 2001 she was promoted to Librarian and awarded tenure in 2007. She accumulated a total of twenty-six years of service at the University of Arkansas. Jan was highly regarded as a carto-graphic authority in the library field, participating in professional activi-

ties at home and abroad. She embod-ied the idea of a truly professional, experienced, and highly dedicated research librarian in her creative ini-tiatives to improve the quality of research materials and convenience of access. Under her leadership, the pop-ular Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day showcase of local GIS projects was implemented in 1998 and continues each year, attracting numer-ous participants from the region.

During Jan’s tenure as maps librar-ian, the map collection grew by more than 19,000 maps, the historic and archival maps in Special Collections were organized and cataloged for the first time, and library services related to the pioneering electronic map and aerial images of Arkansas were initi-ated and grew rapidly in partnership with the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies. Jan’s colleagues at the University Libraries miss her greatly.

Libraries Well Established in Social Networking MySpace is an Internet “place” where, since 2007, users have been able to find information about the Uni-versity Libraries, including news items, library tips, library announce-ments, and access to library tools for research. The Libraries have posted several useful library videos on YouTube, including “How to Read a Call Num-ber,” which has been recognized by the American Library Association as

worthy of posting on its Web site of peer-reviewed instruc-tional materials.

The Libraries’ Facebook page offers direct access to InfoLinks, the online catalog, as well as links to the library home page, announcements of events and exhibits, article databases, course reserves, library hours, video and other tutorials, general research help information, and a direct link to the “Ask a Librarian” page. Most recently, students and faculty have been able to follow the Univer-sity Libraries on Twitter. Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows users to receive timely information about favorite people, institutions, and

places on computers, cell-phones, or mobile devices. Our Twitter feeds for Performing Arts & Media, the Fine Arts Library, and the Libraries as a whole provide up-to-the-minute updates on new library services and collections, current events and exhib-its, the most recent hours changes, weather closings, and research tips for every subject. Users must create a personal Twitter account in order to subscribe to (or “follow”) library tweets. Users can now also get library Twitter feeds on personal Face-book pages.

As part of the “Collections & Con-nections” lecture series sponsored by Special Collections and the University of Arkansas Press, Thomas C. Ken-nedy, emeritus professor of history, presented “‘We Surely Owe a Debt to These Long Downtrodden Peo-ple’: The Accidental Founding and Amazing Survival of Southland Col-lege, 1864–1925” on November 18 in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main. Kennedy’s lecture was based on research for his book, A History of Southland College: The Society of Friends and Black Education in Arkansas, just released by the Uni-versity of Arkansas Press. Before a sizable audience, Kennedy described the 1864 founding of the school as the Helena Orphan Asylum for lost and abandoned children. It was estab-lished by the Friends Freedmen Com-mittee of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quakers), with the help of the 56th United States Colored Infan-try Regiment, which was garrisoned in Helena. Alida and Calvin Clark, two abo-litionist members of the Religious

Society of Friends in Indiana, traveled to Helena on a mission trip to pro-vide temporary relief to displaced war orphans but instead found a lifelong calling and started the orphanage and school that became Southland Col-lege and the first predominantly black monthly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in North America. During his lecture, Kennedy related

a story about his research on South-land College that was nearly as acci-dental as the founding of the school. Early in his research on British Quak-erism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America, he happened upon a “helpful but clue-less summer vacation archivist” in Richmond, Indiana, who suggested he investigate materials in the attic of the Friends Central Meeting building. There he discovered a trove of South-land College records, which, through his active diligence and support, even-tually found a home in the Libraries’ Special Collections Department. The Southland College Papers include photographs, correspondence, student records, financial records, min-utes of the Missionary Board of the Indiana Yearly Meeting, plus minutes and records of the Southland Monthly Meeting. A finding aid describing the contents is available on the Libraries’ Web site at: http://libinfo.uark.edu/SpecialCollections/findingaids/south-land/southlandaid.html.

Art Exhibits: Allegory, History, and Scene Design The art exhibits in Mullins Library’s lobby featured an interesting assort-ment of styles, genres, and medi-ums during the late summer and fall semester of 2009.

In July and August, Little Rock artist Amy Edgington exhibited “Scis-sors, Paper, Cloth: Collages by Amy Edgington.” Edgington takes the top-sy-turvy view of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” both literally and metaphorically in her collages that are made of discarded magazines, calendars, wrapping paper, fabric scraps and found objects, combined with acrylic, pastel, colored pencil and pen. These colorful, discarded compo-nents combine to create images in

which the norm becomes abnormal, the valued becomes devalued, and the real becomes unreal. For instance, in “The Lost Innocents (War Toy #2),” a group of bunnies dressed in turn-of-the-century clothing proudly holds aloft a large bomb, depicted either in collective mid-bound or while cling-ing to the flying warhead. Are they trying to stop the destruction, or guide it on its way? In September and October, John Bell, Jr., of Fort Smith exhibited “Scenes from Early Northwest Arkan-sas,” a collection of paintings and

giclées. Bell is recognized for his historical paintings of scenes from the frontier days of Fort Smith to the early twen-tieth-century days of North-west Arkansas. An exhibit titled “Works” by Michael J. Riha, University of Arkansas drama professor, was exhib-

ited in November and December, including piec-es in three genres—still-life works that were creat-ed while Riha studied with Danila Korogodski, a Rus-sian set designer; a series of watercolors depicting a quiet celebration of Gul-ley Park trees before last winter’s ice storm forever altered their shapes; and set design renderings that Riha created “as a means of communicating [his] ideas for the world of the play.”

John Bell, Jr., Fort Smith Artist, Honored The University Libraries hosted a reception on Friday, September 11, to honor John Bell, Jr., of Fort Smith, the artist whose work was exhibited in Mullins Library through the end of October (see story below). Mr. Bell is a 1965 graduate of the university, and his association with the university was celebrated along with his life-long achievement in art. Chancellor G. David Gearhart spoke about growing up in Fort Smith familiar with Bell’s historically themed art. Chancellor Gearhart then surprised Bell with a framed rubbing of Bell’s name from the Senior Walk on the University of Arkansas cam-pus. Jim Caldwell, Pine Bluff busi-nessman and friend of Bell’s, remi-nisced about his decades of associa-

tion with Bell and highlighted some of Bell’s many accomplishments. Bell himself told anecdotes about his days at the university and about the compo-sition of and research for some of the paintings included in the exhibit.

Bell painstakingly researches the setting before he begins a painting, studying postcards, early photographs, and even traveling to the location to take photographs of his own for geo-graphic realism. Such research pro-vides historical accuracy in details, such as the view of historic Fort Smith, when it actually was a frontier fort, from across the Arkansas River as depicted in “Into the Territory” and “Back to the Fort” from Bell’s U.S. Marshall series. Local land-marks come alive in past eras, such as the Washington County Court-house and War Eagle Mill. Bell has exhibited one-man shows in Memphis, New Orleans, Wash-ington, D.C., Omaha, Little Rock, and Fort Smith.

Speakers from the John Bell, Jr., reception were (left to right): Chancellor G. David Gearhart, Dean Caro-lyn H. Allen, John Bell, Jr., and Jim Caldwell.

With your donation of $50, $75, or $100 to the University Libraries, a librarian will purchase a book with the value and within a subject area that you specify. We will place a special bookplate in the book purchased with your gift to honor the person you have identified. You and the person you designate will be notified of the book selected and will be given a copy of the bookplate that appears in the book.
