UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA RESEARCH CARNIVAL 2018 DEWAN TUNKU CANSELOR, UNIVERSITI OF MALAYA
15th - 17th NOVEMBER 2018
Research is an integral part of academia, and the
University of Malaya, like all top universities, keeps
the knowledge and skills taught to our students
relevant and alive with our academics engaging in
cutting-edge and high impact research. UM
recognises the need to invest in research that impacts
society as universities are regarded as one of the key
institutions contributing to the process of social
change and development.
Our continual flux of students perpetuate the academic momentum and
energy, as we continue to excel with the country’s highest number of
publications and citations in indexed journals. UM has increasingly been
making impactful socio-economic contributions through the
commercialization of our research products, joint efforts with industries and
government agencies, as well as direct engagement with diverse communities
to translate our knowledge and skills, in realizing the quadruple helix model.
With the theme “Research Partnerships for Societal Impact”, UMRC 2018
celebrates UM’s research output, highlighting its impact on society and the
nation as well as to build meaningful linkages between researchers and
communities.
Fostering partnerships and exchange have been the heart of UMRC since its
creation in 2012. UMRC 2018 is therefore particularly pleased to welcome
you to discuss, contribute and engage in the various forms of partnerships
that can contribute to and serve the society. With speakers and chairs
comprising our Eminent Professors, forum panelists from the industry and a
special session with our Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, it is hoped
that these programs will inspire potential collaborators and foster new
partnerships that can contribute to serve society.

multidisciplinary solutions, leading to a transformation of our world for
better societal development at all levels.

UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA RESEARCH CARNIVAL 2018 DEWAN TUNKU CANSELOR, UNIVERSITI OF MALAYA
15th - 17th NOVEMBER 2018
This year marks the fourth UM Research Carnival,
also known as UMRC which first began as a research
conference back in 2012. UMRC is a platform to
showcase research and innovation output of UM’s
researchers as well as bring together researchers from
all over the campus. It is not often that researchers
from the Faculty of Engineering could meet with
those from the History Department, for example. In
the scenario where IR4.0 is the buzz of the current
world, it is very important that researchers engage with one another, so
UMRC aims to provide such opportunity for researchers in UM. The UMRC
also brings to campus our stakeholders from industry, government and our
communities to truly make it a celebration of research.
UM’s current research tagline is “Transforming Knowledge, Industries and
Society”. This tagline is to make us mindful of the fact that when conducting
research, the end game is to produce some impact from the research outputs
generated. The output should eventually lead to either transformation of
knowledge through novel findings, transformation of industries with new
and possibly disruptive technologies or transformation of society through poli-
cies, programmes and social innovation.
Thus, the theme for this year’s UMRC, “Research Partnerships for Societal
Impact” reflects our effort in highlighting our research impact to the nation
and society. To create impact, research projects would have to be multi- and
trans-disciplinary, involving both the science and technical aspects as well as
the social and humanities dimensions. The projects showcased in this event,
from faculties, clusters and centres of research, we believe will demonstrate
such elements.
vi
I would like to thank all speakers and participants for agreeing to be part of
the UMRC 2018. My sincerest appreciation also goes to the members of the
R&I family at DVC’s office, IPPP, Clusters, PPGP, PPP, USPI and Infra,
UMCIC, UMCares, UPUM, HIR and Wisma R&D for organising this event.
Without their hard work, this event would not have materialised.
Welcome to UMRC 2018. Thank you.

UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA RESEARCH CARNIVAL 2018 DEWAN TUNKU CANSELOR, UNIVERSITI OF MALAYA
15th - 17th NOVEMBER 2018
As Malaysia’s leading public university, the
University of Malaya is committed to playing her
role in shaping our society through research and
education. Implementing the quadruple helix model
through the involvement of industries, government
agencies and local communities in our research
activities has seen stakeholders coming together in
partnerships for the incubation, development and
commercialization of ideas. Society can reap more
of the benefits of research if the outcomes are translated into marketable
and consumable products or services. Hence, enhancing partnerships
between our experts and stakeholders will certainly widen our research
perspectives towards addressing societal needs and formulating solutions
to the challenges faced by the world today.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the UMRC 2018 and we
look forward to your participation in all the activities including the
forums, multidisciplinary research project pitching challenge, poster
competition, research aesthetics exhibition and the Carnival Run. It is
hoped that these activities will provide opportunities for researchers to
share their research outcome, inspire potential collaborators and part-
nerships, and spark more effective collaborations for multidisciplinary so-
lutions.

University-Industry and community partnerships
are a synergistic strategy that benefits both in
multi-dimensions. Industry plays a major role in
ensuring that research and talent development is
focused into the innovation pipeline that feeds into
the economic growth of the country and
contributes to global technology advancements
while our communities keeps us focused on the
impact that our research needs to create. At the
University of Malaya industry partners have
contributed significantly to the success of our research and talent
programmes through co-development projects, technology licensing and
in providing avenues for ensuring the output of our research has
commercial or industrial value while our community partners have
allowed for knowledge transfers to directly impact many different layers
of our society. Our focus is to ensure that opportunities for collaboration
and communication continue to expand through many new and exciting
platforms particularly in the era of IR4.0. UMRC 2018 is an ideal
platform to learn about best practices in collaborations and partnerships
and to foster new opportunities with all our stakeholders and we look
forward to lively, productive and interactive engagements throughout this
carnival.
