May – June 2019 RESEARCH BULLETIN Corneliu Sima, DMD, DMSc, MMSc, assistant professor of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity, received supplemental funding from NIH/NIDCR for a new collaboration with Dr. Xiao Han, associate member of the staff at the Forsyth Institute. This funding is supplemental to his parent R01, “Regulatory B Cells in the Amelioration of Immune-Mediated Periodontal Disease.” The research will assess interactions between B10 cells and monocytes/macrophages in resolution of periodontal inflammation. The project will help establish a strong collaboration to bridge the knowledge gap in innate-adaptive immune cell interactions during resolution of periodontitis, and to advance noninvasive imaging approaches for craniofacial immunology research. RESEARCH AWARDS Alessandro Villa, DDS, PhD, MPH, assistant professor of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity, program director for the Oral Medicine Residency Program, and associate surgeon in the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, received an award from NIH/National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The overall goal of his project is to increase Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) awareness among oral health providers working with American Indian populations and therefore increase HPV vaccination rates. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. The Global Health Starter Kit Launches The HSDM Office of Global and Community Health has officially launched the Global Health Starter Kit. This project is led by Brittany Seymour, DDS, MPH, assistant professor of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology, and the Global Oral Health Interest Group of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. Seymour is the editor and co-editors include, Janice Cho, PharmD, DMD and Jane Barrow, MS, both lecturers in Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology. It is a competency-based global health ‘starter’ curriculum designed for dental educators and students. It is free and available for anyone to use and is organized into two versions, one for educators and one for learners. The Global Health Starter Kit, https://hsdm.harvard.edu/global-health-starter-kit is funded by the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, Dr. Thomas Hall Global Health Education Grant, and International College of Dentists USA Section Foundation. NEW RESEARCh STAFFAkiri Yamakawa, MD, PhD, joined the Yang Lab as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Developmental Biology. Yamakawa received his PhD from the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan and MD from the School of Medicine at Kanazawa University, Ishikawa, Japan. Yamakawa’s PhD work under the mentorship of Professors Shinsuke Ohba and Ung-il Chung, focused

on the identification of a chondrocyte-specific Indian hedgehog enhancer by a genome-wide approach and the investigation of the Sox9-mediated mechanisms of the enhancer activation. In Yang Lab, Yamakawa will focus on the function of Wnt5a/PCP signaling in chondrocyte stem cell regulation in the growth plate. He is partially funded by a grant from the Japanese Orthopaedics and Traumatology Research Foundation.

Arielle Mather, MPh & Jamie BichelmanThe Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology (OPHE) is pleased to welcome Arielle Mather and Jamie Bichelman to HSDM.

Arielle serves as Program Manager for the National Center for Equitable Care for Elders (NCECE), a HRSA-funded project housed within OHPE. Arielle will oversee the planning and delivery of the Center’s trainings and technical assistance activities. She has spent many years in the Boston nonprofit sector addressing the needs of older and vulnerable populations, as well as the providers who care for them. Arielle received her Master of Public Health from Tufts University School of Medicine, where she concentrated in health communication.

Jamie serves as the Communications Coordinator for the NCECE and will oversee outreach and engagement through social media content production, website management, and the development of brochures and other literature. Jamie will be responsible for designing and facilitating the dissemination of informative program-related marketing materials to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and brings more than 12 years of experience in journalism, marketing, and content production.

Dr. Francesca Gori Joins the Office of Research

Starting July 1st, Dr. Gori will work closely with all DMD students on their research coursework and requirements. Gori received her PhD in biology from the University of Florence, Italy and competed her postdoctoral work at the Mayo Clinic. Gori then decided to pursue a career in basic research in the US and joined the Endocrine Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is now assistant professor in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity in the Baron-Gori Lab. Her work focuses on investigating the molecular, cellular, and genetic basis of skeletal homeostasis and its regulation in health and disease with emphasis on the mechanisms by which Wnt signaling regulates bone homeostasis.

Gori will work with Dawn DeCosta, director of Research Operations at HSDM with oversight from the associate deans for Research, Dr. Malcolm Whitman and Dr. Yingzi Yang. The Office of Research supports student research experiences in basic science, clinical and translational research, health services and global health research. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any member of the Office of Research with questions or concerns during this transition.
